3 August 16, 2015 TO NEW COLLEGE STUDENTS Right now there is a lot of activity, excitement and anxiety because kids are getting ready to go to college for the first time. Within the next two weeks moms and dads will be making the trek to college with a car loaded with all sorts of useful and useless stuff. There will be the arranging of the dorm room and meetings with the roommates or suitemates. Many of the schools have a big meeting with the parents to give them some orientation and, to be honest, to speed the anxious parents on their way. Of course, there will be emotional farewells and a big effort will be made to hold back the tears. Then the parents have gone and the incoming freshman is alone in the midst of a whole group of different people and vastly different circumstances. There may well be some homesickness and you can be sure you are not the only one. Plenty of others feel just the same way they just don t admit it. There are some decisions that you must make at this crucial time in your life. I would like to make a few suggestions. For a combination of reasons a lot of kids get through high school and do rather well without really studying. Often enough, if there is a problem with high school academics it can be traced to far too little really disciplined study. Some get away without doing homework and develop poor study habits. College is a different story. You are expected to be responsible and do the work this is a sign of maturity and practical intelligence. Personally, I suggest that you take careful and detailed notes during class and then summarize them as soon as possible after the class is completed. Don t fall behind on the assigned readings. College is no place for procrastination. When you enter college, you really are going into a different world. It is a world with distinctively secular values and attitudes. (This is true whether you go to a Catholic college or any other college. People are not that very different and young people are suddenly finding a tremendous new freedom and often fail to respond responsibly.) You must be different. You bring with you the values of your mom and dad and the values of the Catholic Church. We expect you to carry Jesus Christ and His Gospel into your college and give Christ to those you meet. You need not be self righteous, but you must be so confident in your faith that you are not afraid to be different and live the Catholic morality that you have been taught. Whatever you do, never miss a Sunday (or Saturday evening) Mass and pray every day. The prayers need not be long, but they should be consistent.

4 Prayer is holding the hand of Jesus and will see you through a lot of things. I urge you to become involved in Campus Ministry and participate in the excellent programs that are offered. In so many colleges there are mission trips which are life changing experiences and can teach you more about life than you can ever imagine. Every day think about your parents and how much they love you and miss you. They are probably paying for that indispensable cell phone. Use it and call them a lot an awful lot. If only you knew how happy they are to hear your voice. One more thing: Before you go to college, whether you commute or go away, hug them and thank them for all they have done for you. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald In today s second reading, St. Paul reminds us that, blessed by the Lord, the good steward should give thanks to God the Father always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. STEWARDSHIP 08/10/14 $21,446 08/09/15 $23,136 (+7.88%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. Next weekend s second collection is for the Life Center of Long Island EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Our parish offers Eucharistic Adoration the first Friday of every month from 1:00-3:00 PM for PEACE. Why not come an spend some time with Our Lord in prayer for peace. FEAST OF ST. AIDAN AND SPECIAL ST. AIDAN NOVENA A special Novena in honor of St. Aidan will begin on Saturday, August 22nd and will continue each morning after the 9:00 AM Mass until Monday, August 31st. 5 LIFE CENTER OF LONG ISLAND COLLECTION Our pastor, Msgr. McDonald, has invited us to contribute to a second collection the weekend, August 22 nd & 23 rd, for the Life Center of Long Island. The Life Center runs four pregnancy care centers that help women and men in crisis situations to make healthy, life-affirming decisions for themselves and their pre born child. There are offices in Deer Park, Massapequa, Hempstead and Riverhead. Many generous people donate baby clothes, diapers, car seats and so many other items that a mother in need can use for her baby. The Life Center offers help for the woman who has chosen life for her child. The Center is supported entirely by donations and private contributors on Long Island. No doubt, this ministry continues through this generosity. You are invited to join in helping the Life Center continue its work. Please pray often, even daily, for God s blessing on the work of the Life Center. Thank you. PEANUT BUTTER GANG Thank you everyone who volunteered to make peanut butter sandwiches at our last session. We made about 980 sandwiches and 94 wash-up kits. The Gang meets on the second Saturday of every month. Join us if you can. ATTENTION ALL HIGH SCHOOL GRADS, PARENTS AND GRANSPARENTS Our teens are becoming young adults starting college with a lifetime of opportunities in front of them. There will be many choices that they will make during the next four years. Let s help them to stay connected to their faith while they are making those choices! Let s help our young people keep a faith connection while they are in college. Many will be away from home and out on their own, what better way to help them stay grounded and give them a safe place to meet new friends than through their University s Newman Center. Newman Centers are Catholic Ministry Centers at non-catholic universities throughout the country. These Centers provide pastoral services and ministries to their Catholic student population. Through the Newman Connection students are connected to their Campus Minister and are invited to join Catholic Campus Ministry this becomes their faith community away from home! It s simple to make that connection the only information that is required is the student s first and last name and the name of the college or university they will be attending in September. Send this information to Marianne Sheridan, Director of Youth Ministry at msheridan@drvc.org. This information will be forwarded to the proper Newman Center and your teen will be welcomed in the Fall when they arrive at their school. Let s keep our Young Church connected and committed to their faith!

9 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "Freedom of Conscience" definition: The right to follow one's own beliefs in matters of religion and morality (Oxford Dictionary) Atlanta Fire Chief Fired: Fire Chief Kevin Cochran lost his job because, on his own time, he self-published a men's devotional book that briefly mentions the biblical view of sex as reserved for marriage between one man and one woman. Cochran was ordered to complete "sensitivity training" after complaints from activists who objected to his Christian views. An investigation concluded that Cochran did not discriminate against anyone but the mayor fired him anyway. "Your action against Chief Cochran appears to violate fundamental principles of free speech and religious freedom. The only way Chief Cochran could avoid his views would be to disown his religion..." said Georgia's congressional delegation. Chief Cochran is appealing his termination. (ADF.org, 4/9/15; washingtonpost.com, 2/8/15) Supreme Court Victory: A small church in Gilbert, AZ, uses signs to invite & direct the community to it's services but was restricted to small, 6 sq. ft. 14 hour display temporary signs while home association 80 sq. ft., political 32 sq. ft., and ideological 20 sq. ft. signs are permitted for display indefinitely. In a unanimous decision, the U.S. Supreme Court decisively affirmed that the government cannot play favorites when it comes to free speech. "The government (ordinance) cannot target one form of speech with severe restrictions while allowing more speech for others in similar circumstances," said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel, Jeremy Tedesco. (adfmedia.org, 6/18/15) Mark Your Calendar: Thursday, September 10th 7:30PM, St. Patrick Church, 280 E Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787, Thomas Renker, General Counsel of Rockville Center diocese, will speak on threats we are facing to our religious freedom. *September 17th, "Constitution Day", is to be observed in all public schools which are mandated to provide educational programming on the history of the U.S. Constitution adopted on September 17, Please visit & register to receive updates:

12 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This Sunday we keep reading from John s Gospel chapter six, the climax of Jesus Bread of Life Discourse. Given every opportunity to offer a symbolic interpretation of His words concerning His Body and Blood, Jesus intensifies the realism of his statement: For my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Was Jesus speaking literally? When he said This is my body, it is not figuratively nor a mere symbolism but a literal interpretation. As the Jews started quarreling among themselves, Jesus does the unthinkable. The young preacher from Nazareth, responds with: Truly, Truly, I say to you unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. Jesus words were indisputably understood to be literal, the Eucharist is a divine mystery, the Divine Mystery that exceeds our finite natural understanding. The Eucharist is the center of the Church, the Church is made but for the Eucharist. With God nothing is impossible. He is omnipotent, He can change the substance of simple bread and wine, and indeed He does, resting now in a thousand tabernacles (within a few blocks of our own Parish); this reality is no small matter, for this reality transcends the universe. C.S. Lewis once wrote: Christianity, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. Translating these words about the Eucharist, it cannot be is moderately important. Christ s words, What God s say is IS! This week we have in our kiosks CDs which I was asked to be brought back Praying the Rosary Like Never Before by Dr. Edward Sri who shares practical strategies for praying the Rosary better, so you can encounter Jesus more deeply in prayer. A most beautiful CD to share with all friends and family who are not familiar with the insights of this wonderful prayer. Living Life by Design, Not Default Fr. Mike Schmitz explains how we need to live a Christian life within a technological age, with so much technology at our fingertips he explains the consequences of the techie lives we lead! A CD for all teens, parents to hear the challenge! Share them, the Holy Spirit will bring them to those who needs to listen to these wonderful talks. Toti Conforti
