3 March 8, 2015 IN THE SUMMER OF 2009 In the summer of 2009 (I had just arrived here) I wrote to you a rather challenging and direct letter entitled: Beware of Hooper and Webb. It was based on two letters appearing in the New York Times supporting suicide for the terminally ill. The authors believed that such efforts were good and should be legalized. For your convenience I have included my past letter in this week s bulletin. Right now the Catholic Bishops of New York State are very concerned about a movement to legalize assisted suicide. As a matter of fact, just last Tuesday Bishop Murphy wrote and urged priests and other Church leaders to inform the people of this outrageous assault on human life and urge their participation in efforts to defeat it. Make no mistake about it. This is an issue of enormous moral importance. It involves the Commandment of God: Thou shalt not kill. (Exodus 20:13) That is something everyone knows. Just go into a classroom and ask kids for an example of a big sin and the first thing that comes out of their mouths is murder. They know and have no doubts about it. Nevertheless some highly educated adults have come to the conclusion that God is no longer the arbiter of life and death. They are. These people are not necessarily bad people. They may even believe that they are alleviating human suffering by promoting euthanasia or as they call it death with dignity. They are sadly and horribly mistaken. The pleasant death they are advocating is a direct violation of the law of God and is an affront to the dignity of the human person who is created in the image and likeness of God. The Catholic Church teaches that life is sacred from conception until natural death. In 1995 St. John Paul II wrote his famous encyclical The Gospel of Life (Evangelium Vitae.) There he warned against the Culture of Death and he specifically addressed the question of assisted suicide. Listen to him speak: To concur with the intention of another person to commit suicide and to help in carrying it out through so-called "assisted suicide" means to cooperate in, and at times to be the actual perpetrator of, an injustice which can never be excused, even if it is requested. In a remarkably relevant passage Saint Augustine writes that "it is never licit to kill another: even if he should wish it, indeed if he request it because, hanging between life and death, he begs for help in freeing the soul struggling against the bonds of the body and longing to be released; nor is it licit even when a sick person is no longer able to live". 85 Even when not motivated by a selfish refusal to be burdened with the life of someone who is

4 suffering, euthanasia must be called a false mercy, and indeed a disturbing "perversion" of mercy. True "compassion" leads to sharing another's pain; it does not kill the person whose suffering we cannot bear. Moreover, the act of euthanasia appears all the more perverse if it is carried out by those, like relatives, who are supposed to treat a family member with patience and love, or by those, such as doctors, who by virtue of their specific profession are supposed to care for the sick person even in the most painful terminal stages. Bishop Murphy encourages us all to visit life.org for solid and reliable information about assisted suicide and end of life issues. He also wants you to know that you can help in making our conviction known to our political leaders. This can be done easily by visiting the Catholic Action Network at As your pastor, I urge you to join with our bishops in the defense of life, particularly for the elderly and the disabled. Followers of Christ cannot remain mute in the midst of a egregious moral evil that is on our doorstep. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald STEWARDSHIP 03/02/14 $29,140 03/01/15 $30,005 (+2.97%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. Next weekend s second collection is for Catholic Relief Services. 5 Beware of Hooper and Webb Sickness, dying and sadness are hardly pleasant topics. At times, however, it is very necessary to speak about the most critical of moral issues that face us as a people and a Church. Right now the United States is involved in a critical debate about health care and whether there should be a fundamental reformation of the health care system. Many are rightly concerned that millions of Americans lack proper health care because they lack health insurance. The cost of health care continues to skyrocket and the question arises: What are we as a nation to do in the midst of such a crisis? I submit that while this is often thought of as a political question, in reality it is a moral question of preeminent import. Christ is sick; Christ is dying. Every person who is not receiving the health care he or she desperately needs is Jesus. It is not enough to say Isn t that too bad! St. James in his Epistle talks about the hungry, but his words apply equally to the sick: If a brother or sister is ill-clad and in lack of daily food, and one of you say to them, Go in peace, be warmed and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what does it profit? (James 2: 15, 16) To do nothing to help the sick is a woefully inadequate response and can never be an acceptable moral answer. Yet, there are the most serious questions that must be raised and satisfactorily answered. Some of these are: Will every person s right to life be protected by the projected reform. What about the elderly man or woman who is in a skilled nursing facility and is incurably ill because of cancer, dementia or simply old age? Will his or her life be considered any less valuable than the young person who requires the services of a sports medicine specialist because of an athletic injury? I hope not, but I wonder! Friends of mine are expecting their little girl to be born this Friday in Boston. The child will require at least three very serious and enormously expensive heart operations. Under a new system, would this child be taken care of? I hope so. The truth is, of course, that each and every human life is sacred one is not to be preferred to the other. You get the point! In an age that is concerned with cost cutting, will the price of the new health care be the abandonment of the weak and the elderly in the mistaken belief that some lives just matter more than others? Over and over again as a priest I have visited Intensive Care Units where the most sophisticated of medical equipment is being employed to save or prolong human life. Will the government decide that certain human lives aren t worth it? We already know that we live in a land where unborn children s lives are continually and routinely terminated and it is legal. Furthermore, assisted suicide is countenanced in some states and a tremendous push continues in that direction. It pays to read the Letters to the Editor in the New York Times. Within the past weeks two frightening letters were published. For example, on Saturday, July 18 th, Michael Webb of Los Angeles wrote: I am reassured to know that there are countries like Switzerland where there is a very civilized way to end your life in the event that I choose to do so. I m outraged that so personal and painful a decision should still be treated as a crime in less civilized countries, like most of the United States. Mr. Webb goes on to say self appointed moralists should mind their own business. On the same day Trish Hooper opines: This decision (to end one s life) takes planning, courage and understanding about your own health and your own future. Webb and Hooper are dead wrong and are in stark opposition to the Fifth Commandment. We as followers of Jesus have to make certain that any health transformation plan does not become the slippery slope to euthanasia and that the Webbs and Hoopers of this world don t get their way. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald

7 Our Lenten Journey Third Sunday of Lent Exodus 20: Corinthians 1:22-25 John 2:13-25 Week three. How are you doing? Have you been able to strengthen your relationship with Jesus? In today s first reading, we hear the story of the Ten Commandments. The way of living that is pleasing to God. How many times have we used these 10 rules to examine our lives or our consciences? If you re like me, I think I do pretty well. I love my parents, I don t steal, I haven t killed anyone, and I respect my neighbor and his property. Pretty good, right? But what about the very first commandment? It s so easy to gloss over; I, the Lord am your God, who brought you out of that place of slavery. You shall not have other gods besides me. (Exodus 20:2) Hmmm. What about this one. What other gods do I have that I so easily put before my God? My job, my friends, my possessions, my activities, my station in life. Do these take precedence to my relationship with God? Do I think of my relationship with God in the same vein as my job or my other activities? Or is it something more special? Something to treasure and spend time with. Anything worthwhile is worth caring for and spending time with. Don t you think so? Today s Gospel ends with a very compelling thought. But Jesus would not trust himself to them because he knew them all, and did not need anyone to testify about human nature. He himself understood it well (John 2:25) I find comfort and a lesson in these words. Jesus understands us better than we can ever understand ourselves. He lived our life full of temptations, pain, and sorrow. But through his relationship with God, he knew where his trust had to lie...with God and not with human nature. He always puts God first, strengthens his relationship with Him by praying always, and gives us a clear example to follow. Keep trying.

14 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "Humanity needs to weep and this is the time to weep," said Pope Francis. The Pope condemned "plotters of terrorism..." (newsmax.com, 9/13/14) Since 1970, Open Doors has been monitoring persecution of Christians worldwide through the International Institute of Religious Freedom with academics dedicated to studying the religious liberty of Christians. (open doors.org/2015-world-watchlist) China: Ranked #29 out of the 100 countries where Christians face the most persecution, the communist Chinese government aims to control all religious activities. The state has declared some churches "evil cults" and has started a program to eradicate them. The Roman Catholic Church is illegal and the state is actively fighting against it. Mexico: Ranked #38 in the world facing the most persecution, Mexico's 120 million Christians (population 125 million), are victims of organized crime and the drug cartels. These violent groups target Christians because churches are revenue centers (extortions) and because churches support programs for the rehabilitation of drug addicts and alcoholics. Return of Anti-Semitism: Seventy years after the liberation of Auschwitz, violence and hatred against Jews is on the rise, especially in the Middle East and in Europe. ( 1/30/15) Attacks on Jews have been rising and many are now wondering if Europe will remain their home forever. Overall, 26,500 people immigrated to Israel in 2014, a 32% spike over (theatlantic.com, 2/16/15; cnn.com, 2/16/15). FBI statistics on hate crimes committed in America in 2012 reveal that 60% of religious based hate crimes were against Jews. ( 11/26/13) Please join us for the next CFFR prayer/meeting Wednesday, March 18th 7:30 PM in the Convent.

15 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Today I want to start off by saying thanks. Thanks for being part of what the Lord is doing through Lighthouse Catholic Media. It is incredible that we have over 10,000 CDs distributed to this day! The point of this ministry isn t about listening and sharing the teachings on the CDs; it s about real people encountering God in new ways! You are doing a great job of sharing Jesus. I love hearing your stories and feedback about how you are using the CDs, whether is showing it in the classroom, how you are being personally inspired by them, to how your friends and family are using the CDs to encounter Jesus. Perhaps it is not too late for some of you to get started. Remember the goal of this is not to hear a CD, but to find opportunities to evangelize. Commit to share Jesus this Lent Let s talk about discovering a love that is greater and richer than anything you have ever felt. What it means to you that God loves you? How do you believe in God in difficult times? Consider these questions and remember God loves you completely and perfectly. Take sometime today to pray about what it means that God loves you!! Reach out to someone you know who is going through a difficult time. Write down your story about how you have encountered Jesus. Pray for an opportunity to share it with someone. Look for an opportunity to do this. Continue to pray for those who you want to share the Lord with over Lent. God has done great things and He is doing big things!! God loves you! In our kiosks there are many CDs you can listen to that would bring to focus all these points. And also many on the Lent season. Glimpses along the way of the Cross- Seven last saying of Christ-Three days that changed the World- Meditations on the Stations of the Cross The Passion of Christ- True meaning of Easter. All of these would make your Lent very meaningful, much closer to the Agony and Death of our Savior. Share it all with people the Holy Spirit puts in your way! The best you can do to share Christ!! God Bless you for your efforts. Toti Conforti

22 THE KNIGHT S CORNER (Providing information from the Knights of Columbus) DID YOU KNOW? As the violent conflict in Ukraine continues to create an enormous humanitarian disaster in the freezing winter months, the Knights of Columbus is providing $ 400,000 to relief programs sponsored by the Catholic Church in Ukraine. During their ad limina visit Pope Francis on Feb. 20 th, the pope assured the Latin and Greek bishops of Ukraine that the Holy See is at your side, and urged them to be attentive and considerate of the poor. Gifts by the Knights of $ 200,000 each to the Greek and Latin Rite Catholic communities of Ukraine are being used for humanitarian relief, including projects that feed homeless children and refugees living on the streets of the capital city of Kiev. Too often, the conflict in Ukraine is discussed purely in military or geopolitical terms, while the most vulnerable and marginalized the young and old, the poor, the sick, and the increasing number of refugee families are almost invisible to the outside world, said Supreme Knight Carl Anderson. Our support is meant to further enable the bishops of Ukraine as they help their people and further implement the Holy Father s call to aid those most in need. ST.
