3 April 12, 2015 HOLY SATURDAY WITH LARRY KUDLOW Last Saturday morning (Holy Saturday) I was driving to Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood to see a friend of mine, Brother John Lawrence Dawson. While I usually listen to WOR, I happened to tune in 770 and I was in for a big surprise. There was a man talking, Larry Kudlow. He is some expert in financial matters and I was about to turn him off since I have little interest in those things. Yet, he was not talking about finance or politics in his first segment he was talking about faith and his relationship with Christ and the Church. I thought to myself: how strange! All you usually get is Happy Easter and Happy Passover. You really hear about their personal religious convictions from radio commentators. He began by talking about the Passion of Jesus Christ and Bill O Reilly s book, The Killing Jesus. The night before he had seen the Killing Jesus TV show and was really struck by the violence of it. Right off the bat, I must say I neither read the book nor saw any of the miniseries. I did see the Passion of the Christ and the sufferings of Jesus that were depicted were brutal and horrible. It is difficult to forget some of those scenes. The passion of Christ was the definitive expression of God s love for us and is a stark and vivid reminder of how much we mean to Him. Larry Kudlow made no bones about the fact that the story of Christ s sufferings led him into the Catholic Church some years ago and that he is very involved in the life of his parish, St. Patrick in Redding, Connecticut. He even told us that he was an usher and would be quite busy with all the extra parishioners on Easter Sunday. Needless to say, I was taken with his public declaration of faith and practice. He reminded me of one of my best friends, Bob McGowan. Bob was a teacher of English at Garden City High School and never tired of telling people that he was a Catholic. He used to add: believing and practicing. The Catholic Church never tires of telling us that we have a mission: to bring Jesus Christ to the world. It is our goal to see that He is known and loved by as many as possible. The last words of Christ in the Gospel of St. Matthew make that so clear. The apostles and for that matter their followers are to go into the whole world and preach the Gospel. That Gospel is living, breathing truth the person of Jesus Christ. We are not to preach a gospel of simply being pleasant and nice. Instead we are to preach a gospel of redemption, supernatural charity and practical holiness that is rooted in our Catholic faith and the power and grace of the sacraments. Each and every one of those sacraments receives the power to transform and make holy by the Passion of Jesus Christ.

4 I congratulate Larry Kudlow on being able to talk about his conversion and practice of the Catholic faith on WABC. Would that more Catholics would have the same kind of courage and zeal that he displayed on Holy Saturday. Even if you re not a famous radio personality, you can still lead others to Christ. It takes a little effort, but is well worthwhile. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald The Christian community described in Acts understood and practiced total stewardship. St. Paul reports that the believers did not claim anything as their own, but held everything in common and distributed to each whatever was needed. 7 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "I am the way, the truth and the life" (John 14:6) "You will know the truth and the truth will make you free" (John 8:32) Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA): Fact vs. Fiction This past week, journalist abuse has exploded into controversy over an innocuous religious freedom law in Indiana. The federal RFRA was signed into law by Pres. Clinton in 1993 and 20 states have substantially the same law. (federalist.com, 3/30/15) Don't be fooled. The RFRA does NOT legalize discrimination. Anyone that says that is misinformed or worse. RFRA merely allows business owners to refuse to perform their services if doing so is a violation of their faith. (catholicvote.org, 4/2/15) Under the various RFRAs, a state or the federal government may not substantially burden an individual's exercise of religion unless the burden is in furtherance of a compelling government interest and is the least restrictive means of furthering that interest. If the government's interest is not important enough - literally compelling - it cannot outweigh an individual's right to practice his religion as he sees fit. RFRA is a shield, not a sword. It can be used to defend oneself against lawsuits or administrative action. It can't be used to try and deprive others of the protections of law. Despite no evidence for discrimination under this law, journalists will simply repeat this fiction as if it were true and hope that incurious, unsuspecting people will assume it. (the federalist.com,3/30/15) "The Gospel of Jesus Christ is for people who want to be free, "free" in the truest sense. And its message is meant for all of us - unless we choose to be afraid." Archbishop Charles Chaput Events: CFFR next meeting Wednesday 4/15/15 7:30 PM Msgr. Kirwin Hall Visit: (register to receive notifications)

8 2015 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others Christ teaches us always to look upon others with mercy and tenderness, especially those who suffer or are in need of our help. -Pope Francis A Place to Call Home Charles spent 17 years deployed at military bases throughout the world. Returning home after an incident involving nerve gas, he began struggling with debilitating bouts of anxiety and depression. His circumstances worsened and he couldn t maintain a steady job. Charles moved in with his mother, but within a year she died and his childhood home went into foreclosure. Catholic Charities Project Veterans Independence, which guides homeless veterans into permanent housing so they can live independently and have access to support networks that get them back on their feet, reached out and helped Charles. I was out of the service, out of a family, out of a job and out of a home. Catholic Charities found me and helped me to not only find a place to live - but they helped me to turn my life around. - Charles, honorably discharged US Veteran Please consider donating to the Appeal and making a difference in someone s life. 10 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Sunday of Divine Mercy! It is proper that we shall reflect on this characteristic God right after we contemplated last week the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ where His love for us triumphed over hatred, conquered death and dispelled darkness. But what does mercy mean? St. Thomas Aquinas said Mercy consists of bringing a thing out of non-being into being. and nothing in the world would exist if God, at every moment, would not love into being everything and all! We, ourselves, were created in Love. As we pray in Psalm 139. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother s womb..your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.! All this out of Love! The Divine dimension of Mercy calls us to enter into a deep relationship with Our Savior by going beyond our comfort zone, our indifference to the people around us, not to close our eyes to their needs, to live not as the world proposes, putting ourselves forward, to compete above all, always to prevail; but to be in service of one another and always ready to help. There is no better time than Mercy Sunday to share with you something personal happening in my own life. For some time now I have been in poor health, not being able to walk well, experiencing pain. My ability to do and go as I wished has much diminished. Well, we know there are angels around us, but I experienced the love of human angels right here in our parish. Two very loving people came to my aid. Every day and my every need, they were there with me. From taking me to the hospital and waiting hours with me, to calling me to take me to every doctor I needed to see. They took me to daily Mass and I was able and they would bring meals to my door, thinking I was not able to cook. All this happened throughout the entire season of Lent. Now, by the grace of God and all the prayers for me, I feel a lot better. I am still on the mend. Easter Sunday these lovely angels sent their husbands to our house with arms full of trays of food, flowers, and love!! I did not ask permission to use their names. They are around us, they are angels!! Thank you, my beautiful friends and may the God of Mercy be with you! I hope all of you are able to come Sunday at 3:00 PM to the celebration of Divine Mercy. Remember: Ask and you shall receive. Let s ask the God of Mercy to grant all the needs around us, for peace in the world, for all our brothers and sisters who are persecuted for His Name and for all those that do not know His Name or reject Him. You are all in my prayers, God bless you!
