3 October 25, 2015 HAPPY CATHOLICS MAKE SENSE About three weeks ago I went over to Kellenberg High School in Uniondale for their Annual Dinner Celebrating Catholic Education. It was a fantastic meal and a great evening but something very surprising to me happened. A young man who was a teacher there came to me and began to talk. I had never met him, but he told me he decided to become a teacher because of a talk I had given at XLT, a religious program which consists of Adoration, Christian music, a short talk and a big dinner. He was exuberant and happy and had loads of enthusiasm so I was happy that whatever I said that evening years ago had a good effect. Although I never was a student at Kellenberg (it didn't even exist when I was a teen), I've always felt that whatever the Marianists do there really works. The kids just love being there and love to talk about it years after they leave. The kids have been given a great experience of religion and more specifically of the joy of religion. That is exactly what we need to give our kids: a positive experience of the Catholic faith, one that is rooted in the Gospel and the happiness of belonging to Christ and His Church. It is my opinion that many teens are very open to religion and significant, positive religious experiences. Here are some of the ways I think we can help them to discover Jesus Christ and the joy of being Catholic. 1. Create a home atmosphere that is warm, loving and accepting. This says a lot about your Christianity and how it should be lived. It proclaims that our religion is one of love, forgiveness, compassion and understanding. Home is the place where our kids should feel and receive the love of Christ from parents who are deeply in love with each other. That kind of love radiates and forms the attitudes of our children for the rest of their lives. 2. A Catholic home should be Catholic. That simply means that it should be a place of prayer and Catholic practice. The atmosphere should breathe Catholicism. That, of course, should be in the mentality of the home but there should be external signs of our faith. Here are a few examples: a crucifix in every bedroom as a sign of the infinite love of Jesus Christ; the availability of the Bible each teen should have one); holy water and blessed palm. You don't need to go overboard a little goes a long way. 3. There should be religious celebrations that are not merely parties but are a concrete acknowledgement of the Catholic faith. For example, a Communion party is held not just to bring the family together but to rejoice in the fact that one of the children has received the Body and Blood of Jesus Christy for the first time. The sacrament is most important; the party is great but secondary. Parenthetically

4 on a personal note, my sister Anne and I received Confirmation on the same day, went home, received a Daily Missal as a present, had supper, watched TV and went to bed. That was it! No party, but we knew we had received the Holy Spirit. 4. Be enormously interested in your children and spend a lot of time listening to them. By doing this you are showing them the face of Jesus Christ. If you do this, you will find that they listen to you. Our Holy Father Francis has the right idea. He expressed it so well in his letter the Joy of the Gospel. The joyful Christian, the truly happy person is the best and most convincing proclamation of the Gospel. "Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. (Phil 4:4) In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. 10 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "I have set before you life and death... Choose life." Deuteronomy 30:19 Choosing Death: * Disability rights advocates are fighting back after Gov. Jerry Brown authorized assisted suicide in CA. "Our concern is about people who are not in a position to make a decision of their own free will." They object to the willful termination of human life that the bill permits and are concerned that it would allow elderly, ill, or disabled patients to be coerced to choose death. (dailysignal.com, 10/9/15; nytimes.com, 10/5/15) * A new CA law requires that pro-life crisis pregnancy centers must point women to facilities that provide abortions. "Does the government have a right to tell a newspaper what to write, a preacher what to preach, a private school what to teach? Of course not. So why is it OK for the government to force pro-life pregnancy centers, against their will, to advertise and promote government abortion services?" said CA Assemblywoman Shannon Grove. (newsmax.com, 10/12/15) Monument and Statues: * The Oklahoma Supreme Court ruled that a 6' monument of the 10 Commandments, paid for with private funds, must be removed from the State Capital grounds. "The 10 Commandments has played a historical role in the founding of this nation," argued an OK Attorney General spokesman. Nevertheless, the monument was removed in the middle of the night. (newsmax.com, 10/13/15) * An 8' bronze statue of Satan, surrounded by adoring children, was recently erected in Detroit. "There is no legal or historical standing to erect an image of Satan being worshipped by children, in government or American historical locations... unless, of course,... confessing to be wise, we have become fools," said Pastor Carl Gallups. (wnd.com, 7/11/15) "For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens." Ephesians 6:12 Mark Your Calendar: * Thursday, October 7:30 PM, St. Patrick's, Smithtown, will host Rabbi Aryeh Spero, well known speaker and author, Push Back - Reclaiming the American Judeo- Christian Spirit, 280 E Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787

13 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA We are so blessed by the decision of our Pastor to bring to us the new program FORMED, an online site of inspiring Catholic content, which offers beautiful video and audio presentation, movies, e-books, personal devotions, scripture study, marriage enrichment, faith formation, and many more. This program is important for young people, which will help this generation find their faith and learn answers to the questions they did not know. FORMED is empowered by many wellknown teachers, Father Robert Barron who presents Catholicism, Steve Ray, a wonderful series The Footsteps of God, filmed in the Holy Land, and so many others. I am so jubilant for all the opportunities we will have in our hands to evangelize with this program, especially to all our friends and families that are spiritual but not religious only because they were not well educated in our Faith. We can do this work together, keep praying for the success of this important work. Remember that we can evangelize in the grocery store, in a restaurant, in our work-place, in an airplane. It may be uncomfortable at first, but we have a message the world needs to hear! We are posting very new CDs, two of them are about our Catholic Faith What s So Great About Being Catholic by Jason Evert. This is an outstanding presentation that shows us the beauty and the treasures of the Faith, as revealed through the Saints and Sacraments Why Be Catholic by Patrick Madrid. This inspiring presentation gives reasons why to embrace our Faith, biblical and historical reasons of the deposit of faith given by Christ. Confession by Fr. Larry Richards provides with hope for a closer and healing relationship with Jesus Christ. Thank you for your support of this ministry. Remember to pass along your CDs, the Holy Spirit will guide you to those that need to hear them! As I say often, you plant the seed and the Lord will water it and it will grow! God bless you all! 18 KNIGHTS CORNER PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT - This past summer, Pope Francis addressed a need for clean drinking water in the world, especially in Africa. In response to the Pope s statement the Knights of Columbus, through a partnership with the non-profit organization, charity; water will provide financing to build 20 new clean water wells in Africa. This project will improve the health and save the lives of thousands of people. At the same time the Knights will continue to support the Wells of Hope organization which for years has dug wells in Central America to bring clean water to remote villages. The Knights stewardship of the environment also includes our responsibility as a corporate citizen. In New Haven, we have replaced all the windows in our corporate headquarters building with state-ofthe-art, energy-efficient windows. We estimate that it will now take 13% less energy to cool our building and 31% less energy to heat it.
