3 November 2, 2014 Child Protection Within the last ten or eleven years there has been a mega change in the way in which the Catholic Church on Long Island and in the United States deals with those who present themselves as volunteers. In the past, if a person wanted to teach religion or work in the CYO or any other parish ministry, he or she simply registered and generally was accepted. If the staff or parish priest didn t approve, of course, the person was not accepted. That has all changed and for the better. Let me tell you what happens now in our parish and what has been happening in the parishes of our Diocese. The prospective volunteer or employee fills out a volunteer request form or application in which he or she expresses interest in a particular ministry or position. A screening consent and disclosure form is filled out and a code of conduct is signed. The person is then background checked. If the background check is good, the person can begin parish ministry as soon as Virtus Training is completed. Virtus Training is a two hour session in which awareness about child abuse is presented and there is a film and a discussion conducted by a specially trained facilitator. In our own parish these meetings are conducted by Jim Corrigan, Director of our Faith Formation Program. As a matter of fact, at the present we are looking for other people who can become certified to conduct Virtus Training. Volunteers or prospective employees may attend Virtus Training at other parishes in the Diocese. For your information, background checks are conducted for those who are 16 years of age or older and Virtus Training becomes mandatory at the age of eighteen. Of course, these procedures are strictly followed in the school and in religious education and no parent can volunteer for any activity unless he or she goes through the procedures for child protection. In the school itself there are many programs that are

4 specifically designed for the welfare of the children. Among these are sections which deal with bullying, internet safety and drug and alcohol abuse. When a priest wishes to work in our parish he must have approval from his own bishop or religious superior that he is in good standing. This is called a testimonial of suitability for priestly ministry and there is a special visiting priest screening consent form. These priests also must take the Virtus Training. Naturally all government regulations regarding visas and passports must be observed. We must also obtain the permission of our bishop. Every year at the beginning of July I must send a letter to Bishop Murphy in which I certify that all our volunteers and staff have fulfilled all of the requirements of the Diocese. In addition a complete list of all volunteers and personnel is submitted to the Diocese. I take this very seriously and make every effort to make sure the safety of our children is a singularly important priority. I know you support me in this. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald On the Feast of All Souls we pray for those who have gone before us and stand in judgment before God. May we share with each other the treasure of love s memory and console one another with the hope of resurrection. STEWARDSHIP 10/27/13 $ 26,446 10/26/14 $ 23,864 (-9.76%) CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL 10/26/14 $138,424 Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. Next weekend s second collection is for Parish Social Ministry.

5 Deacon Sean Magaldi On Saturday, November 1 st, at St. Joseph Seminary in Dunwoodie, Cardinal Dolan ordained Sean Magaldi a deacon. On June 20 th Sean will be ordained a priest by Bishop Murphy and will celebrate his First Mass the next day at noon here in St. Aidan. Sean attended public and parochial schools, Chaminade High School and Adelphi University before entering the priestly formation program of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. His diaconal ordination is an occasion of singular joy and happiness for our parish as he joins other outstanding men from St. Aidan who have consecrated their entire lives to Christ and the Church. I wish to warmly congratulate Sean, his parents Jerry and Debbbie Magaldi, and his brother Justin. We couldn t be prouder! 6 ELECTION DAY YOUR VOTE COUNTS! This Tuesday, November 4 th, is Election Day. As your pastor, I urge and encourage you to vote. It is a sad commentary on our free society that so many (vast numbers) do not exercise their privilege to vote. I suppose those who stay away from the polls believe that their vote makes no difference at all or that no matter who is elected, it will be politics as usual. Catholics are called upon by their faith to take civic responsibility and to have a genuine interest in the welfare of society. Voting is the way we have to make our opinions known. In this election there are critical issues that demand our interest and attention. We know that the Catholic Church is always an advocate for the poor, the disenfranchised and the demands of social justice. In addition there are grave concerns about the rights of the unborn and attacks on the freedom of religion. As our Bishop says, this is not about partisan politics, but it is about the ability and freedom of the Catholic Church to carry out its divine and apostolic mission. It is my hope that you will vote on Tuesday and prayerfully consider the issues. This is a sacred duty and responsibility.

9 MEDIA MISGUIDANCE By Rev. Msgr. James M. McNamara The recently concluded Synod on the Family in Rome is sparking sounds bites from the media. There were a number of very important concerns discussed in Rome. We need to be careful about media misguidance that comes down to catchy phrases and dramatic sound bites. Our rich Catholic tradition and the doctrinal teachings of the Catholic Church cannot be reduced to phrases and sound bites. The magisterial teaching of the Catholic Church is not up for grabs. Pope Francis is trying to create a more pastoral and welcoming approach to persons who seek to live the Christian life. We are all sinners. We all fall short of perfection. At present it seems to me that the members of the Synod are in dialogue with how to assist people on this Christian journey to live with integrity as they strive to grow in Christian witness faithful to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Understandably there will be differences of opinion. Speaking the truth in love involves holding together both the truth as we proclaim it and the persons we value as members of the Christian community. Neither disregarding Church teaching nor excluding people through judgment serves the mission of the Church in the world today. I dare say that even the categories of liberal and conservative do not help in fostering a heathy Christian community. In this age of openness there have been reports given to the media about the work of the Synod. This is fine but it is risky. It leaves the Synod vulnerable to misguidance by the media. We need to allow the Synod to do its work and not latch on to every sound bite that emanates from the media. People tend to give credence to what is on the internet, television or in print. Let us be astute about the limitations of the media. First, the media loves a sound bite. But sound bites do not allow for context and the foundation and history of a given statement, no less the meaning of a synod. Second, whether it be progressives or conservatives, the media love to give their own spin on things rather than simply report the news. The same exact quote can be used to make a point via one s ideology. This is not helpful. In addition, too often condescension and prejudice mark the tone of the speaker s remarks. If you want to receive comprehensive information about the Synod (and news about the Church) I encourage you to turn to Telecare, our Diocesan Television station which is now available on more platforms than ever before. Telecare is available on Cablevision, Channel 29 (Nassau and Suffolk) and Channel 137 (elsewhere), Verizon Fios, Channel 296 and Time Warner Cable, Channel 471. Telecare is also available on line at TelecareTV.org. The Long Island Catholic Magazine comes out monthly and they also have a website that is rich in Catholic teaching and news: In today s world and in today s Church we have lost the art of respectful conversation. As the Synod members continue their work, our best stance is one of prayer to the Holy Spirit for guidance and inspiration. This Synod is meant to be a preparation for the Synod of So we have ample time and opportunity for prayer and to gather together as one in the presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament and around the table of the Lord where we are privileged to hear the Word of God and to receive the Body and Blood of Christ as we sinners seek to become saints. May the Lord give you peace.

10 In one week we will be able to access on our computers or I- Phones this program which will give us the BIG PICTURE OF THE CATHOLIC FAITH AND HOW TO LIVE IT! The first episode is The Journey of Faith with full color sacred art, that draws us into the beauty of the Catholic Faith. Quotes from Scripture, the saints, and recent popes deepen our understanding of the Church s teachings. Engaging discussion topics and reflections inspire participants to give their life more to Christ and provide practical life application. Each episode has 2 parts: a short 5-7 minute introduction and a longer minute teaching. The digital (online) platform is available to all St. Aidan parishioners, free. The Parish Digital Access Makes Symbolon Available to EVERY FAMILY in Our Parish. This is amazing!! For parishioners with no computers we will have sessions every Friday in our parish, as an opportunity to watch all episodes and integrate Symbolon in their lives. We encourage all parishioners to actively participate in this program and invite your friends and family to watch it with you. If you desire further information you can call me at (516) or me at toticon@aol.com

18 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION Preserving Freedom for All Forming Consciences For Faithful Citizenship "Educate and inform the whole mass of the people... They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty." (Thomas Jefferson) Catholics For Freedom of Religion Preserving Religious Freedom for all "God who gave us life gave us liberty. And can the liberties of a nation be thought secure when we have removed their only firm basis, a conviction in the minds of the people that these liberties are the Gift of God?" (Thomas Jefferson) The First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the freedom of religion to every American. Unfortunately, religious liberty is under attack - in our churches, in our schools and in the public arena - like never before in American history. Let us meet these attacks head on so we can restore religious liberty in America in accordance with the principles of our Founding Fathers. (Liberty institute.org/religious rights) Today, many Americans are awakening to the trend of government to diminish and disregard the God-given inalienable rights of individuals. There is erosion of religious liberty and the legal and cultural imposition of anti-judeo- Christian philosophies upon our society. This includes requiring taxpayer funding of abortion and contraception which forces American citizens, businesses and organizations to violate their deeply held religious convictions. Therefore, let us work to see our government strengthen and renew its commitment to respect and protect each individual s exercise of his God-given inalienable rights and to protect and preserve the religious liberty provided in the U.S. Constitution. (cwfa.org/religious liberty) Galatians 5:1 For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.

WILLISTON PARK LIBRARY Long Island author Natalie Harnett speaks about her new novel Hollow Ground at the Williston Park Library on Friday, November 14th at 7:00 PM in the Assembly Room of the Village Hall. The underground mine fires ravaging Pennsylvania coal country have forced eleven-year-old Brigid Howley and her family to seek refuge with her estranged grandparents, the formidable Gram and the black lung stricken Gramp. Tragedy is no stranger to the Howleys, a proud Irish-American clan who takes strange pleasure in the curse laid upon them generations earlier by a priest who ran afoul of the Molly Maguires. The weight of this legacy rests heavily on a new generation, when Brigid, already struggling to keep her family together, makes a grisly discovery in a longabandoned bootleg mine shaft. In the aftermath, decades-old secrets threaten to prove just as dangerous to the Howleys as the burning, hollow ground beneath their feet. Inspired by real-life events in Centralia and Carbondale, where devastating coal mine fires irrevocably changed the lives of residents, The Hollow Ground is an extraordinary debut with an atmospheric, voice-driven narrative and an indelible sense of place. Lovers of literary fiction will find in Harnett s young, determined protagonist a character as heartbreakingly captivating as Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.

23 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This week our Pope Francis in his daily Mass encouraged attendees to pray to God by praising Him, saying that remembering the good He has done, particularly how He created us in love, helps us to know how. Prayers of praise bring us this joy, (the joy of) being happy before the Lord. Let s make a real effort to rediscover this the Pope said. A starting point for this can be to remember how God chose me before the creation of the world he said, adding that our names are in God s heart (and) in God s heart, just as the baby is inside its mother. Pope Francis was reflecting on the Letter to Ephesians, which was read at Mass. (this is the team for my course this year) and where St. Paul praises God for the gifts He has given, and recalls how He chose us in Him from before the foundation of the world. What a wonder! All of us were known to our Father from all times! The creation is a mystery; we can only understand it by entering in the Mystery of Jesus Christ himself, He who died on the Cross for all of us. In the celebration of the Eucharist we fully enter into this mystery, where He is alive, He is with us, here, in His glory, in all His fullness and gives us His life for us once again! Let s seek to enter into this mystery every day! Let s pray to the Holy Spirit with Pope Francis, that we receive the grace to understand and to praise the Lord for this Eucharist that gives us life, where we find the joy and confidence to live a life as children of our Beloved Father! Read and Pray Psalm 139, the psalm of praise to the All-Knowing God! This week we have CDs to help you to find your way to praise the Lord in your prayers From the Foundation of the World by Curtis Martin, powerful and inspirational talk. The Forgotten Virtue: Pathway to Holiness by Fr. Wm. Casey, a clear explanation how to live our lives according to God s will. God by Dr. Peter Kreeft, a renowned teacher and professor, a CD that would give you a truly picture of our All-Loving God! Powerful CDs to pass on to those the Lord puts in your path, souls that needs to know and comprehend our Faith, to embrace the Father which created them in Love! Toti Conforti
