3 August 3, 2014 WHERE PRE-CANA BEGINS It was a simple religion class about the sacraments. We were talking about marriage and the question came up: How long does marriage last? I was hoping that the answer I would get would be until death. No such luck! A seventh or eighth grader simply said: Until they get divorced. This, of course, was theologically way off the mark, but it was a succinct and realistic appraisal of the current situation. Such a reply puts the teacher at a decided disadvantage. The catechist wants to impart the teaching of the Church, but at the same time is well aware that any number of the students may come from families that are profoundly unhappy or already divided. The Catholic Church is today at a real disadvantage in talking and teaching about marriage. For one thing, the reality is that Catholics (at least a lot of them) are very much like the rest of the population in their attitudes toward marriage. I make a point of reading the Weddings and Celebrations section of the New York Times every Sunday. There you see any number of couples (Catholic or not) who choose to marry at a venue instead of a church or some other religious edifice and the officiant often enough has become a minister for the occasion. The emphasis is very much on the reception and it is not unknown that catering establishments encourage ceremonies to take place in their own chapels. Even more than that, the fact is that weddings are not considered sacramental celebrations by any number of young people. Holiness has been lost. In its place there is a tremendous importance attached to externals and in not a few cases much less thought is given to the spiritual preparation that is so essential. On the other hand, thank God, there are couples who are highly motivated from a spiritual point of view. They take Pre-Cana seriously and plan their wedding liturgy with enthusiasm. They think about what they hear in Pre-Cana and discuss the ideas that have been presented. Many have wonderful parents who have given a splendid example of the greatness of Christian Marriage. All this is to the good. Pre-Cana (marriage preparation) actually does not begin in the Rectory or the Parish Hall. No, it begins in the homes of those who are preparing for marriage. And it has begun long before there was any thought of engagement. It began when loving parents spent an enormous amount of time with their children and imparted tremendous values: love for Jesus Christ and His Church, human dignity, self-respect, compassion, forgiveness and unconditional love. True enough, these homes are not perfect homes nor homes where there has never been a disagreement or squabble, but they are homes where real people made and are making genuine efforts to have great families. The parents are not perfect, but they are trying to do the best they can.

4 We all need to support families in every way we can. We need to encourage and be unendingly supportive of families particularly our own. We need to avoid interfering in the lives of our married children and realize that they may have problems and difficulties we do not even expect. What we can do is be accepting of human imperfection and continually pray for our married children. When there is trouble, place it in the hands of Jesus and His Blessed Mother. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald In Today s Gospel, Jesus feeds the five thousand with five loaves and two fish. The message of stewardship is that God s gifts, shared, will always be more than enough. STEWARDSHIP 07/28/13 $24,043 07/27/14 $23,437 (-1.38%) BROTHERS OF THE SACRED HEART COLLECTION 07/27/14 $ 6,157 Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. 6 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION PRESERVING FREEDOM FOR ALL To preserve religious freedom we must understand it. Freedom of Religion, the gift of God to each man, is guaranteed to Americans by the 1 st Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. Freedom of religion insures that our beliefs and morals can guide our private and our public lives. We are not limited by a mere Freedom of Worship which would confine faith within the walls of our churches. Denials of freedom of religion include: The HHS mandate imposing insurance coverage of contraceptives, abortion inducing drugs and elective sterilizations to be paid for by religious organizations. Designation of the Little Sisters of the Poor as not religious enough to be exempt from the HHS mandate. In April 2014, a student was told she could not bring or read her Bible during free time in school. The law clearly allows students to bring Bibles and read them in their free time even if it is in the classroom. Our culture which praises and enables actions once unthinkable is quickly translating new supposed rights into laws which deny freedom of conscience and freedom of religion. VIRTUS TRAINING CLASS There will be a Virtus training class here at St. Aidan Parish on Saturday, September 13th at 9:00 AM in the Finamore Parish Center. Anyone who is involved in any way in the parish, school or sports programs must attend a Virtus class. If you would like to attend this class please call Lynn Przeniczny at (516) x9104 to register. Other classes are available through the diocese. For information on those classes go to DRVC.org and click on the Education tab. ST. AIDAN S ADULT ROCK BAND Father Kevin Dillon would like to start an adult Rock Band. Any adult who plays drums, electric guitar or any other instrument is welcome to join. For information please call Father

7 GOLDEN WEDDING CELEBRATION This Fall, couples that have been married fifty years or more will be honored at liturgies on Sunday, September 21, 2014 at Christ the King, Commack and on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at St. Rose of Lima, Massapequa. Both liturgies will begin at 2:30 PM. Couples may register for ONE liturgy. Registration forms and complete instructions can be obtained at the Rectory office. Registration must be received by August 27th for the September 21st liturgy and September 10th for the October 5th liturgy. There will be additional celebrations in the fall for those who may find that more convenient. If you have any questions please call (516) x207. PEANUT BUTTER GANG Join us on Saturday, August 9th at 8:15 AM in the East Campus cafeteria to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry and homeless on Long Island. Children under the age of 9 cannot be accommodated and those under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults must have taken the Virtus Training. You have to preregister at our address: peanutbuttergang@staidanparish.org. Unfortunately, due to logistics, if you do not pre-register, you cannot participate. This month we ask each volunteer to bring a jar of peanut butter and at least 2 loaves of BREAD. Thank you. Remember what Jesus told us, Amen I say to you, whatever you did for the least of my brothers, you did for me. (Matthew 25:40). SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST By tradition the Church dedicates the month of August to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, which is often venerated together with the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Sacred Heart represents Christ s love for mankind. The Immaculate Heart is our Lady s desire to lead all people to Christ. We still have time this summer to spend in contemplation, reflecting in the gift we had received to be Catholic. Seek time for prayer, ask for the grace to know the Lord as our intimate Friend, ask for the gift to be receptive to His Will. These are the sources of our peace and joy. Imagine to be truly excited about being Catholic, knowing exactly what being Catholic means! Our Lady, because she carried in her womb the eternal Son of God, will be our guide. Persevere in praying the Rosary, it is a powerful weapon, you would be amazed at the results. May you be able to help people that are afraid, discouraged, being God s love, God s presence, not by words, but by service, by concrete love, by listening. Share your reactions and feedback at (516) x9101. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.

12 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This week I read something very interesting and I would like to share it with you. Our Pope Francis, in an interview published in a weekly magazine, listed his Top 10 Secrets for Happiness and since happiness is what everyone desires, me included, I want to pass it to all of you. 1) Live and Let Live. Everyone should be guided by this. 2) Be giving of yourself to others. People need to be open and generous toward others. If you withdraw into yourself, you become egocentric. 3) Proceed calmly in life. To have the ability to move with kindness and humility, a calmness in life. 4) A healthy sense of leisure. The pleasure of art, literature and playing together with children has been lost! Consumerism brings us anxiety and stress, no time to share with one another. 5) Sundays should be holidays. All workers should have Sundays off and spend it with the family. 6) We need to be creative with young people. Find ways to create dignified opportunities for young people. We need to be creative so they won t get involved in wrong things. 7) Respect and take care of nature. Humanity is committing suicide with this indiscriminate use of nature. 8) Stop being negative. Talking badly about others indicates low self-esteem. Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy. 9) Respect others beliefs. We can inspire others through witness; the church grows by attraction, not proselytizing. 10) Work for Peace We are living in a time of many wars and the call for peace must be shouted. This week we have wonderful talks about marriage, family, and children. Marriage and Family by Dr. Scott Hahn who shares key principles that he has lived out in his own life. His advice is practical and challenging. A great engagement or wedding gift!! For Love and Marriage by Johnnette Benkovic who shares her conversion to the Catholic Church and the struggles that came when her husband didn t share her faith. Raising Amazing Children by Matthew Kelly who offers important suggestions and helpful insights from his own experience as one of eight children. You have many CDs to choose from, to listen to and give them away. Many friends and family members are, for some reason, away from the Church. Give them one of the many CDs we have in our kiosks, the Holy Spirit will do the rest to revitalize their spiritual life. Toti Conforti
