3 July 19, 2015 PRIORITIES Some years ago about 40 in fact the Diocese of Brooklyn hired a management consultant. His responsibility was to see how the Diocese and its priests might more effectively serve the People of God. The priests were asked to list the priorities in their ministries and it was to be a somewhat detailed account. A friend of mine he was a young curate at the time was somewhat perplexed and then came up with this thought: God sets my priorities every day. Yes, there are the regular daily activities of the priest: Mass, funerals, sick calls, hospital visits, wakes, counseling, temporalities, the school, the recitation of the Divine Office etc. Nevertheless, just as in any other walk of life, there are emergencies and things that require immediate attention. At times, things that are scheduled must be rapidly readjusted so that matters of overwhelming importance can be given immediate attention. There are, naturally, certain activities that are common to each parish, but in the last analysis the individual pastor will determine with prayer, reflection and counsel those things that he considers the priorities for the parish. You have heard me say over and over again that my priority is very simply the salvation of souls. To my mind, the way to work for this is threefold: charity, the preaching of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and making the sacraments of the Church as available as possible. It is vital that the preaching of the Gospel and the teaching of the Catholic Church be clear, and unambiguous. There should never be any doubt about the primacy of the Gospel and the doctrine of the Church that Christ Himself founded. This is particularly true when there is manifest confusion about dogma and morality. It must be abundantly clear that Jesus Christ is indeed the same yesterday, today and forever. (Heb. 13:8) The ordinary means of holiness are prayers, the sacraments and the practice of charity. The celebration and availability of daily Mass is a decided priority at St. Aidan. Every weekday Holy Mass is offered four times a day so that as many as possible can have the opportunity to be present at the sacrifice of Christ and receive the Holy

4 Eucharist. As a matter of fact, more than two hundred people a day come to Mass here. A good number are from other parishes. This is particularly true of the 5:30 PM Mass since hardly any other parishes in the Diocese have an evening Mass. A few do, but not many. Because Confession, the Sacrament of Penance, is so vital in the Christian life we have confession every day in the Rectory (anonymously, behind a screen) from about 9:00 in the morning to 8:30 at night. There are times, of course, when a priest will not be immediately available. Believe me, these are few and far between and a priest will be summoned immediately in those very rare cases and will be there in fifteen or twenty-five minutes. During the day anyone who wishes to go to confession can do so in the Rectory Office whether or not he or she has made an appointment. You are very welcome! Finally, social justice has always been a priority of the Catholic Church. This is concretized here by our outreach program and the many programs and services it offers. I encourage those who can to work with Parish Social Ministry and make the work of Christ come alive. Of all the virtues, charity is the greatest. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald In today s Gospel, Jesus had planned to slip away from the crowds for a few moments of peace and a little rest. When He saw the people gathered, however, He put His needs aside to meet the needs of others. Sometimes, as good stewards, we are called to do the same. STEWARDSHIP 07/13/14 $23,445 07/12/15 $25,415 (+8.40%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. This weekend s second collection is for The Marist Brothers Missions.

5 SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS The number of persecuted Christians in the world has topped a staggering 100 million according to a recent report from Open Doors USA, an organization that assists persecuted Christians. Paying homage recently to the courage of the Apostles and that of the first Christian community, Pope Francis referenced the atrocious, inhuman and incomprehensible persecutions, sadly present in many parts of the world today, often under the silent gaze of all. Bishop Murphy urges us to reach out and protect these victims who are suffering who are our so often the targets of violence and murder, along with other ethnic and religious minorities. To that end, a special collection will be taken up in our parish the weekend of August 1st and 2nd to assist those who are suffering religious persecution in Syria and Iraq and wherever needed. Please continue to pray for peace and if you are able, to support this special collection to assist for our brothers and sisters in Christ. QUOTES FROM POPE FRANCIS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM Dear brothers and sisters who courageously bear witness to Jesus in the land blessed by the Lord, our consolation and our hope is Christ himself. I encourage you, then, to remain close to Him, like branches on the vine, in the certainty that no tribulation, distress or persecution can separate us from Him (ef. Rom 8: 35) May the trials which you are presently enduring strengthen the faith and the fidelity of each and all of you. - December 21, 2014 PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, Roseanne Mushorn, John Moore, Rita Amendola, Diana Coscia, Carol White, Joseph Fitzgerald, Virginia Fallon, Barney Rinaldi, Jeremy Hogan, Rosemary Herron, Carol Nesbit, Brian Hoffarth, Baby Claire Margaret Carr, Diane La Bianca, Patricia Loughlin, Sister Angela Macarro, Eugine Marton DECEASED: Florence Monteleone, Nicholas Becce, Michael Marcone and for those who have died serving our country. 6 MARIST BROTHERS OF THE SCHOOLS The Little Brothers of Mary Brother James McKnight will be speaking at our parish this weekend, July 18th/19th on behalf of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. There will be a second collection. The Marist Brothers were founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat on January 2, 1817 and our primary mission is TO MAKE JESUS KNOWN AND LOVED. We wish to attend to the needs of the poor and most neglected youth. Mary is our model. Our original name was The Little Brothers of Mary and we still prefer this name. We have missions in more than 80 different countries and now number about 3,800 Brothers. We have been in the United States since 1886 and have schools and ministries in 8 different States. Our foreign missions are many and we now have a new program called the Ad Gentes Program which came about at the request of the late Saint John Paul II. 8 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "Regardless of what a narrow majority of the Supreme Court may declare at this moment in history, the nature of the human person and marriage remains unchanged and unchangeable." Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, Louisville, KY, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), June 26, 2015 A Warning from Canada: "I want to warn America to expect severe erosion of First Amendment freedoms (from) the U.S. Supreme Court mandate (of) same-sex marriage. The consequences have played out in Canada for ten years now, and they are truly Orwellian in nature and scope. In Canada, freedoms of speech, press, religion, and association have suffered greatly due to government pressure." (thepublicdiscourse.com, 4/24/15) Catholics For Freedom of Religion (CFFR) Defending Religious Freedom: "As the battle for protecting religious liberty in the U.S. advances in the wake of the Supreme Court decision redefining marriage, a Catholic grassroots organization dedicated to promoting and defending religious liberty in the U.S. has expanded its reach and drawn the attention of the U.S. bishops." (ncregister.com, 6/29/15) "The Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and CFFR cosponsored the June 25 Fortnight For Freedom Rally for Religious Freedom, where Professor Robert George, chairman of the U.S. commission on International Religious Freedom, delivered the keynote address. The event drew more than 700 participants, including representatives of the Mormon and Evangelical churches." "It is critically important that America's Catholics heed our bishops' call for activism in defense of religious liberty," said Prof. George (ncregister.com, 6/29/15) "Jesus Christ, with great love, taught unambiguously that from the beginning marriage is the lifelong union of one man and one woman. As Catholic bishops, we follow our Lord and will continue to teach and act according to this truth." Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, USCCB Please visit & register to receive updates: COMPASSION FOR THE CUNNEYS There will be a benefit for the Cunney Family who are experiencing some family difficulties.
