3 March 9, 2014 ARE YOU REALLY MARRIED? If you ve ever watched Bridezilla (I have) you realize that a lot of people have some interesting ideas for weddings. There are destination weddings, theme weddings and very few inexpensive weddings. One of the things that is happening in the Diocese of Rockville Centre (and many other places) is that the number of church weddings is decreasing. I must say at St. Aidan s we had over sixty weddings last year. Nevertheless, even here we are beginning to see a moderate decrease. I m not really sure of all the reasons for this phenomenon, but I can guess at some. Any number of couples is being advised to have their total wedding (ceremony and reception) in a catering hall or as it is called today the venue. Other couples simply don t realize that marriage is a sacrament and feel as long as they are married in such a way that the union is recognized by the State, everything is ok. In their minds, marriage is marriage. The Wedding and Celebration section of the New York Times tells us that people are getting married by individuals who become ministers simply for the purpose of performing a specific marriage. It is not unknown that a couple may choose to be married by a very close friend who receives authority even from the State for the occasion. Some brides and grooms have suffered a loss of faith and just choose to be married outside the Catholic Church. They figure that since they don t attend Mass or receive the sacraments, why should they bother to marry in a Catholic ceremony. Others, of course, have the problem of a previous marriage on the part of one or both and are hesitant even to speak with a priest about the possibility of annulment. You will observe that I write about this subject frequently because I know that many Catholics are not married validly and many are considering whether or not to marry in the Catholic Church. I ask all who have any questions about marriage celebrations, annulments and related questions to please visit and we can chat about it. The priest only wants to help you and do the best he can for you. It is unfortunate that some people will call on the phone, but will not take the time to come by and talk. Marriage is far too important for a simple telephone conversation.

4 Finally, every pastor knows that there are all sorts of people who are invalidly married (not married in a way recognized by the Catholic Church) and can be easily married without any great fuss. In addition parishes are filled today with people who have annulment issues. I urge you to come by and I will try my best to help you. If you cannot afford the modest cost associated with annulment, do not let that stop you. We will take care of it. If this letter does not apply to you, please give it to someone in your family, office or school who will be helped by it. You will be doing the work of Christ who wills that couples receive the grace of the Sacrament of Marriage. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald What temptations lure us from the path of discipleship? Possessions? Pride? Power? Oh Lord, create for us a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit within us. STEWARDSHIP COLLECTION 03/03/13 $31,540 03/02/14 $29,140 (-7.61%) This weekend s second collection is for the Church in Need Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish! 2014 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL Serving God By Serving Others CHURCH OF ST. 12 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This year s Lent can be different if we decided to focus our mind less on words like Sacrifice and more on Joy or Grace. If we think that Lent is not something to be endured, but rather is a time of grace and spiritual growth, if we imagine that God will transform our lives with greater joy, and share in His love and service. Ash Wednesday was the start of something wonderful about to happen. We can think of it as a Yearly Second Chance, six weeks to return to God if we have wandered from His path. Let s find time in the day for Lent, invite family members to share with you in your efforts and support one another, reminding them that each step brings us closer to our loving God. Start each day with prayer; make an effort for the whole family to pray together before everyone leaves for their own activities. We can make sure our home has reminders of this holy season, to help raise our minds; our world is so full of images pointing away from God! Place a crucifix in a central place during Lent, light a candle at each meal, encourage your children to start meaningful Lenten practices of their own, write a note to a friend, visit a lonely person, pray for people who you know needs prayers, give thanks to God for the many blessings bestowed on us. Take time to write a note to people who have had an impact in your life in some way: a teacher, a family member, a priest who brought you closer to Christ, to tell them how much it meant to you. All these embody the idea of Lent: prayer, (pray for specific person each day); fasting (fasting for negative thoughts); almsgiving (sending thanksgiving notes is such a gift to give). If we do these things, God s desire for our hearts and our desire for union with God, will meet and Lent will not be a burden but a blessing. I also recommend the CDs we have in our kiosks. We have many tittles about Lent and Holy Week. The Passion of Christ in Light of the Holy Shroud of Turin by Father Peffley, presents detailed scientific and medical evidence for the authenticity of the Holy Shroud, bringing greater clarity to the depth of the agony of our Lord s Passion. Glimpses along the Way of the Cross by Msgr. Shea, teaches us how to open our hearts to the suffering and loneliness of Jesus. Listen to these and others and then give them away, you will give the meaning of Lent to people who would not know otherwise! Have a meaningful and blessed Lent. Toti Conforti

AIDAN S PASTORAL COUNCIL SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH During this solemn season of Lent we are called to draw closer to Christ and focus on His love for us. We can do this effectively by reflecting on some of our ways: Give all who I am back to Him who gave all for me. Give all that I am to those for whom Jesus suffered and died. Guide your children, grand-children, spiritually, setting examples of prayer, almsgiving, fasting. Forgive, let go, move on from all resentment and anger. Support our priests and religious; assist them with prayer, so they can guide the people effectively. Live the Eucharist in a spirit of faith and prayer, Christ will fill us with His Grace, fulfilling all that He has promised. pastoralcouncil@staidanparish.org. or call (516) x9592.
