We now live in a culture of the temporary, in which more and more people reject marriage as a public obligation. This revolution of customs and morals has often waived the flag of freedom, but it has, in reality, brought spiritual and material devastation to countless human beings, especially the poorest and most vulnerable. 3 September 13, 2015 FIVE MINUTES A DAY In the midst of a continual tsunami of commercials, there are some I actually enjoy. Number one on the list is any ad for Bush s Baked Beans because of Duke the dog. Another I find amusing (for a different reason) is one for some kind of pneumonia shot. It starts out with a whimsical proposition what if you only had to eat one piece of broccoli and that would prevent cancer. It made me think that there is one very simple thing that you can do to really help your spiritual life and that is say the Rosary every day. I m absolutely sure that many of you do that and have been doing it for years. Fantastic! Nevertheless, there are a great number of people who really are looking for something to do that would help them and here it is. In the spiritual life I have always believed in this principle: Start small and be realistic. The idea is to commit to something you can do without any great difficulty and begin to do it. I admit that five decades of the Rosary is the ideal and if you can do that magnificent. But let s suppose you are very busy or are in grade school or high school or college I have a simple plan. Make up your mind to say one decade of the rosary a day. That means one Our Father, ten Hail Marys and one Glory be to the Father. Try to meditate a little on one of the twenty mysteries of the Rosary. Choose any one you like my favorite is the Fifth Glorious Mystery, the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven. A decade should take no more than four or five minutes. The beauty of this small commitment is that it takes such a little bit of time that anyone can do it. The only thing that is really needed is the willingness to decide to pray consistently. Should you decide to take up this practice, a lot of wonderful things will begin to happen. You will become a person of consistent prayer. Every single day you will spend five minutes with Jesus and Mary. It will be your special time and you will give up your time and give it to God. Just by doing this you will begin to think about the special events in the life of Christ and Our Lady and what those events mean to you. For five minutes a day you will have a special time of peace and tranquility. You can pray your decade during the television commercial breaks just press the mute button and close your eyes. You can say it while you are in line at the checkout counter in the supermarket or while waiting for your kids after some activity. You get the idea. This is something that you can share with your kids. One of the best ways to do this would be to set aside five minutes in the evening where you all come together and say the decade. Of course, it would be excellent to say five decades of the Rosary as a family, but that might prove a little difficult with the hectic schedules. Any family, however, can mange five minutes for God.

4 I think you will find that a lot of things will change. In families children will ask about the Rosary and what it means. You can explain that the Rosary is a genuine Catholic tradition and has been prayed for centuries. Prayer has the ability to change people and situations. It tends to make us more peaceful and calm and it focuses us on the Heart of God. In addition, the Blessed Mother will be so happy as you keep telling Jesus and her how much you love them. And it only takes a mere five minutes a day. Try it!. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, John Moore, Rita Amendola, Diana Coscia, Joseph Fitzgerald, Virginia Fallon, Barney Rinaldi, Jeremy Hogan, Rosemary Herron, Brian Hoffarth, Madeline Zapolski, Nancy Lump, William M. Hager DECEASED Arthur Mc Loughlin, Leo Cahill, Patricia Hefele, Mary Davanzo, Edward Smith, Robert Kosina, Sr., Anthony Venezia, Carol Bova and for those who have died serving our country. In the second reading today, St. James has harsh words for those who do not put their faith into action. May we be such good stewards of God s gifts to us that we can never be accused of having faith that does nothing in practice. STEWARDSHIP 09/07/14 $30,207 09/06/15 $27,343 (-9.4%) FRIENDS OF ST. The Catholic Church of Long Island is blessed and privileged to be able to care for our senior priests - men who have dedicated their lives to serving God and our community. 10 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Summer does not want to leave us, and the high temperature, but soon we will be in cool weather and remembering the long days of summer. Soon our Pope Francis will be with us. His very historic visit to our country will be a defining moment for his papacy. He has a very tight schedule, Visit to the White House, talking to a joint session of the Congress, addressing the U.N. Assembly, assisting with the Juniper Serra Canonization, in between visiting poor schools and correctional facilities. We should be praying for his trip and try to follow him on TV if it is not possible be there. The Gospel for this Sunday shows us how our ambitions take our minds away from the very message Jesus is proclaiming to his disciples. Called to follow Christ, we worry about what is there for us, Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servants of all. since He came not to be served, but to serve. And taking a child in His arms, He said Whoever welcomes one child in my name welcomes me... Today we watch and read how a wave of refugees sweeps across Europe. We see the ultimate sufferings of children separated from parents, we see the anguish of those who do not know who will welcome them. We must be hearing Jesus telling us Whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the One who sent me. Let s pray for all these families who left everything behind and do not know what will be in the future for them! Last week we started steps to follow when coming to Mass. Before entering the pew, genuflect, or if it is not possible, bow, to the Blessed Sacrament reserved in the Tabernacle. TURN OFF ALL cell phones. DO NOT TEXT during Mass. Fast one hour before receiving Holy Communion. Do not chew gum or eat in church. When you approach the priest to receive Holy Communion make a slight bow as a sign of reverence, and say AMEN as you received. You are saying Yes, I believe. Do not forget to stop by our kiosks and look at the new CDs that are available. Are you to busy? We all live busy, busy lives, but here is an opportunity to take advantage of a new learning experience. With a CD player you can deepen your knowledge of your faith. You can even bring back to the Church those away from it giving away CDs will inspire them. You are helping the Lord to touch souls! God Bless you! Toti Conforti
