3 OCTOBER 16, 2016 EVERY SINGLE SOLITARY DAY NO EXCEPTIONS! Have you ever thought about this? Why do people fall out of love? It is not uncommon for engaged couples to have had at least one long term significant relationship before they found the one to marry. At one time in early adulthood they felt they were in love, but things began to fall apart. They realized defects in the other person, they got bored, they argued a lot. In short, they just realized that the relationship was over and all that was left to do was to break up. It was a learning experience, but a very difficult one. Now they're married and it's no longer just a relationship it's a sacrament. They have been joined together in Christ and that bond will exist until one of them dies. The honeymoon is over and real life begins and so does the challenge of staying and growing in love. Admittedly, this is easier for some than others. In my experience some couples are head over heels in love with each other and nothing seems to change things only get better. For most, however, staying in love requires more effort and more sacrifice. Big problems are dealing with conflict, difference of opinion and in-laws. No matter how much people love each other, no two people agree on everything! In my view, for the sake of the marriage and good of the family, accommodations have to be made on both sides. Often enough, you can go along with a lot of things and try to be pleasant. You may or may not have a great relationship with the in-laws. If you do, thank God and keep it that way. On the other hand, if the relationship is somewhat frosty, be unfailingly kind and exercise Christian charity. Do not get embroiled in family disputes and avoid taking sides. Even if you don't like the in-laws, keep your thoughts to yourself and express no criticism. You don't have to like them, you just have to live in peace with them. Within the last several months Pope Francis asked priests to recall what motivated them to seek the priesthood on the day they first entered the seminary. That's a great idea not only for priests, but for married couples as well. Why did you get married in the first place? Hopefully, because you loved the other person from the depths of your heart. That love has to be nourished and developed. The priest prays daily and sees the face of God as he does; the married person seeks to spend time with the spouse and develop the bond of love that has been formed. Both priests and married people have this same problem. They can easily become distracted. Priests can worry about things that are not that important and forget about their big mission: the salvation of souls. The material aspects

4 of the church are important but nothing is so important as the eternal destiny of the souls entrusted to their care. Meetings and discussions are necessary but they can never eclipse the preaching of the Gospel and the celebration of the sacraments and the works of charity that are integral to the mission of the parish. Married people may get bogged down in the details and frustrations of life, kids' schedules, unreasonable bosses- -but they must never allow these things to obscure the wonder and majesty of their love. Married love is terribly sacred and must not be frittered away and weakened by annoyances. I have what I consider a great suggestion for married couples. Every month on the anniversary day of the day you were married, read those vows again. "I promise to love you in good times and bad, in sickness and in health. I will love you all the days of my life." The operative word is all! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald MASS CHANGE The 12:30 and 5:30 PM Masses on Thursday, October 20th will be held in the Chapel in the Convent. The sacrament of Confirmation will be held at 1:00 and 4:00 PM in the church. 8 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "The struggles that we face as a nation and as a global community cannot be addressed solely by choosing the 'best candidate' for political office....we must fast and pray." USCCB (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops) Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship: The USCCB offers important guidelines for Catholics in developing informed consciences in order that we, as Pope Francis has exhorted us, offer the best of ourselves so that our leaders can govern. The guidelines do not rely on the opinions of mass media in order to discern the truth. The Church teaches that there are, INDEED, absolute truths that stand in opposition to many of the relativisms so prevalent in today s mass culture, which question the very notion of finding the truth. We are called to recognize that there is intrinsic evil and there is intrinsic good. There is intrinsic evil in abortion, euthanasia, human cloning, and misuse of human embryos. There is intrinsic good in marriage as the union of one man and one woman, in protecting human life from conception to natural death, in caring for the poor, the vulnerable and marginalized, and all that such care entails. In the process of forming conscience for the exercise of faithful citizenship, the guidelines remind us that we are making moral choices, and that we are bound to consider intrinsic evils, intrinsic goods and the prospects for correcting morally defective laws by seeking to restore justice. In the summary of the United States bishops reflection entitled, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, we are reminded of the following: Difficult political decisions require the exercise of a well-formed conscience aided by prudence. This exercise of conscience begins with always opposing policies that violate human life or weaken its protection. Those who formulate law therefore have an obligation in conscience to work toward correcting morally defective laws, lest they be guilty of cooperating in evil and in sinning against the common good. (Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops; Catholic Answers/Catholic.com) In this time so critical to religious freedom and conscience rights, let us humble ourselves as we seek His face and pray: Almighty God, we pray for your mercy. Inform our consciences and enlighten our judgement, that we may choose those who will mercifully uphold life and work to restore justice to protect the least among us. Amen LITURGY CORNER The Consecration is followed by the Anamnesis, by which the Church, fulfilling the command that she received from Christ through the Apostles, celebrates the memorial of Christ, recalling especially his blessed Passion, glorious Resurrection, and Ascension into heaven. STEWARDSHIP 10/11/15 $23,023 10/09/16 $22,240 (-3.40%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. This weekend s second collection is for the victims of Hati. Next weekend s second collection is for World Missions.
