3 June 29, 2014 A SENSATIONAL GRADUATION TALK Weather-wise it was an absolutely terrible night. Everything was dark and it just rained and rained. It was probably the worst possible night for a graduation a night just like the day I was confirmed and it rained cats and dogs. If the weather lacked a lot, however, the ceremony was superb. The church was filled with the families of our graduating class and the whole scene was one of contagious happiness. It was fantastic to see the pride and happiness on the faces of the parents as the young people received their diplomas. We had a terrific speaker. Miss Oliver asked Deacon Joseph Bianco from Port Washington to give the talk. Deacon Bianco is a graduate of St. Aidan and was ordained a deacon by Bishop Murphy last May. He also has the distinction of being a federal judge. (That is a lifetime position.) He spoke directly to the graduates and talked about his own experience at St. Aidan School and how much the school meant to him. You could see that the eyes of the kids were riveted on him as he talked. What he said was real, it was about what it was like for him here, in college and in law school. He even admitted that he didn t particularly like law school, but he went on with it because he felt it was the right thing to do. He never thought he would become a federal judge and he admitted he wasn t the smartest kid in the eighth grade or the greatest athlete. He couldn t have been more direct or more honest. Judge Bianco said this: I have only one life and I want to make sure that I am giving everything that I have with the talents and opportunities God has given me. We should all feel like that. Make the best of what we have and are. We should not waste time complaining, but should take each day as God gives it. That holds true for all of us married, single, priests or religious. Simply put: Do the will of God every day. There were two great points made by the judge and I will summarize them here: Put your whole heart into everything you do and stay close to Jesus in the Holy Eucharist and pray to the Blessed Mother. To tell you the truth, I can t think of any better advice and I m delighted that our children and their parents heard it from a deacon and a federal judge. As we say good-bye to our graduates, I, as pastor, wish to congratulate them and all of the graduates of our parish whether it be from elementary, middle, high school, college or graduate school. Of course, I include all the pre-k and

4 kindergarten grads. In a special way I am deeply grateful to all of you who so generously support our parish and make Catholic education a possibility for so many. Congratulations to all graduates and whatever you do always and everywhere stay close to Jesus and Mary. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald PETER S PENCE COLLECTION This weekend our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world. Please be as generous as your means will allow. Saints Peter and Paul worked tirelessly to spread the Gospel. Not all can be apostles, but we, too, must be good stewards of our vocations, using the gifts we ve been given in the service of God s Kingdom. STEWARDSHIP 06/23/13 $25,018 06/22/14 $24,572 (-1.78%) This weekend s second collection is for Peters Pence. PASTORAL COUNCIL On Sunday, June 29 th, members of the St. Aidan s Parish Council will be making themselves available to you in the St. Francis Prayer Garden from 8:00 AM-12:00 noon. Bring your questions, thoughts, and suggestions about your Parish. We will be serving coffee and look forward to speaking with you.

5 Catholics for Freedom of Religion Educating and Advocating for Freedom of Religion for All A June 29, 2014 America s First Freedom: Religious Liberty What some saw as a drift toward imposing a pagan world view on us all is in fact a determined, well organized and well healed effort to change the social mores of our country and to impose their secular values and their anti religious biases on the lives of millions of God fearing Americans. Bishop William Murphy As the media surrounds us with assurances that we Catholics are intolerant and heartless when we hold to the beliefs of our faith and its teachings, and as the secular view is presented as warm and compassionate, remember the warning of one of America s founders, Samuels Adams, How strangely will the tools of the tyrant pervert the plain meaning of words. In his book, Render Unto Caesar, Archbishop Chaput writes, We need to be very forceful in clarifying what the words in our political vocabulary really mean. Words are important because they shape our thinking, and our thinking drives our actions. When we subvert the meaning of words like "the common good" or "conscience" or "community" or "family," we undermine the language that sustains our thinking about the law. Dishonest language leads to dishonest debate and bad laws. Here's an example. We need to remember that tolerance is not a Christian virtue. Charity, justice, mercy, prudence, honesty -- these are Christian virtues. And obviously, in a diverse community, tolerance is an important working principle. But it's never an end itself. In fact, tolerating grave evil within a society is itself a form of serious evil. Likewise, democratic pluralism does not mean that Catholics should be quiet in public about serious moral issues because of some misguided sense of good manners. A healthy democracy requires vigorous moral debate to survive. Real pluralism demands that people of strong beliefs will advance their convictions in the public square -- peacefully, legally and respectfully, but energetically and without embarrassment. Anything less is bad citizenship and a form of theft from the public conversation. Also in his writing Archbishop Chaput wrote of the importance of Catholics witnessing their faith vigorously in public life not simply as a matter of good citizenship, but also as an obligation of the Gospel. If we know the truth of the source and intent of America s Constitutional freedoms and know the truth of the Bible and our Church, we can speak those truths and teach them to others. Then we will give witness to our faith so openly and confidently that we become examples of the faithful Americans our founders envisioned and the good stewards of the gifts of freedom from our Father in heaven. Fortnight events in the Diocese of Rockville Centre include: Bishop Brennan will celebrate the closing Mass of the Fortnight at 12:15 PM on July 4th at the St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Pl, Rockville Centre, NY Check your church bulletin, Telecare TV and for more information about the Fortnight.

9 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA Today we celebrate two of the most important figures of the early Church; Sts. Peter and Paul. Peter, whose name was Simon, was a fisherman from Galilee, and his brother Andrew took him to meet Jesus. The Lord gave him the name Cephas (in Latin Petrus ) which means Rock, because he was to become the rock upon which Christ would build His Church. He was a bold follower of the Lord, and also made many mistakes, however he was the first to recognize that Jesus was The Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus, despite Peter s human weakness, (he denied the Lord three times on the night of His Passion), chose him to shepherd God s church. We can read in the Acts of the Apostles his role as head of the Church after the Resurrection. He lead the Apostles as the first Pope and made sure that the true faith was kept. St. Peter spent his last years in Rome, in the midst of terrible persecutions and eventually was martyred in the year 64. He was crucified upside down at his own request; he claimed he was not worthy to die as the Lord. He was buried on Vatican Hill and St. Peter s Basilica is built over his tomb. Paul, whose name was Saul, was a Jewish Pharisee who zealously persecuted Christians in Jerusalem. He was on his way to Damascus to continue his work in the Christian community there. As he was traveling along the road a great light from heaven fell on him, he was blinded, and heard a voice saying Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? He answered: Who are you, Lord? Christ said: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. Saul went to Damascus, was baptized and recovered his sight. He took the name of Paul and he became the Prophet to the Gentiles preaching the Gospel tirelessly and writing all those letters that bring the message of the crucified Messiah to all the cities of the Eastern Empire. He was imprisoned and taken to Rome, since he was a Roman citizen, where was beheaded in the year 67. He was buried in Rome and the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls was built there. In our kiosks we have many CDs that will arm you with the facts necessary to promote and explain our Faith to all those the Lord brings close to us so we can continue the work of St. Peter and Paul. These CDs are so informative! Chose as many as you can afford, listen to them, and give them away! The Holy Spirit will do the rest and will bring those souls home to our Faith!! Toti Conforti
