3 November 9, 2014 THE WEEK THAT WAS Even though (unfortunately) there wasn t a lot about it in the Bulletin (my fault), last week the Catholic Church in the United States celebrated National Vocation Awareness Week. Nevertheless, here in St. Aidan we had a fantastic weekend with the ordination of Sean Magaldi to the diaconate. He was ordained at nine o clock in the morning on Saturday at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers by Cardinal Dolan. Sean s parents, Jerry and Debbie, picked me up at seven and we got there an hour early. That left plenty of time for coffee and chatting with the priests and seminarians. The hospitality there was tremendous and the whole place was just exploding with happiness. How I wish you could have been there at the Mass with me! Cardinal Dolan spoke so beautifully and really connected with everybody. The joy on the faces of the new deacons and the happiness and pride of their parents were really something to see. There was a lot of emotion and not a few tears of joy. After the ceremony there was a great luncheon in the seminary dining room and we talked, took pictures and enjoyed ourselves. The next day at noon we had Sean s first Mass assisting as a deacon. There was such enthusiasm on the part of the people. Particularly noteworthy was his homily in which he discussed the origins of his vocation and how he began to feel the call of God in his heart. I was struck by his poise and ease in preaching. Sean did not go to a Catholic college and had to fend off any number of criticisms of the Catholic faith by professors and he didn t hesitate to defend our religion. He was no pushover for anti-catholic propaganda. Speaking on behalf of the faith led him to appreciate the gift of faith and helped bring him to the altar. One of my big priorities as pastor is encouraging vocations to the priesthood and the religious life. Right now we have three men studying for the holy priesthood: Sean Magaldi, our new deacon, who will be ordained in June, Michael Cassidy, a student in our Priestly Formation Program at Douglaston. In addition, Thomas Aralde, now Brother Ambrose, has taken his First Vows as a Dominican and is at the

4 Dominican House of Studies in Washington, D.C. As you know we have a convent on Bermingham Place in which Sister Mary Pat Neylon and Sister Laura Helbig live. They are members of the Dominican Sisters and Sister Mary Pat is the Prioress of the Amityville Dominicans. The presence of these two Sisters is a great blessing to our parish and they have been very supportive and helpful to me. Ever since I have been pastor here we have been blessed with the presence of a newly-ordained priest. First there was Father Thomas Tassone and now there is Father Michael Edathil. Father Dillon grew up in this parish and came here only a few years after he was ordained. For these priests and for Father Damian Halligan of the Society of Jesus, I am particularly grateful to Bishop Murphy for his generosity to St. Aidan. These priests and their priestly zeal enable us to have four Masses celebrated each week day. Please join me in prayer for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. If you see any promising candidates, people with generosity and faith, you can encourage them and pray for them. Know that when you do this you are doing the work of God. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. Mc Donald As we pray today for an increase of spiritual gifts, we are reminded by the Bishops Pastoral on Stewardship that good stewardship of the church means cherishing and fostering the gifts of all, while using one s own gifts to serve the community of faith. STEWARDSHIP 11/03/13 $27,515 11/02/14 $27,516 (0%) ALL SAINTS DAY 11/1/13 $ 2,953 11/1/14 $ 2,875 (-2.64%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. This weekend s second collection is for Parish Social Ministry. CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS COURT ST. You need not attend these additional rehearsals. RITUAL OF THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) Last weekend at the 5:00 PM Mass on Saturday, our parish celebrated the Rite of Acceptance for our candidate in the RCIA Process, Debra Osa. This is the first Ritual of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), a change of identity takes place: Inquirers become catechumens. She will be welcomed by the church and signed with the cross of Christ to signify her new status as a disciple and member of the household of faith. In this ritual she will be specially marked as God s own by our community of faith here at St. Aidan Parish. After the welcoming, the catechumens are dismissed. The dismissal shows that their formation in the Word has begun. The assembly is sending them to undertake the work of delving more deeply into what they have heard in the Scriptures. The Rite of Dismissal that you will see at different Masses each week here in our parish as well as other parishes in all the Diocese s signifies that the catechumenate period is an in-between time. The catechumens are now members of the household of Christ, but they are not yet full members who partake of the Eucharist. This does not mean that they cannot attend another Mass and stay through the Eucharist. In fact it is encouraged so that they fully understand the Eucharist as the Catholic Church teaches. Gloria Brech

12 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION Religious freedom, an essential requirement of the dignity of every person, is a cornerstone of the structure of human rights, said Pope John Paul II (12/16/87) The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, adopted by the U.N. in 1948 says, Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion. But religious freedom is widely violated around the world. (NY Times, 2/16/14) News to Consider from CFFR: Many persecuted Iraqi Christians and other minorities have fled Iraq since San Diego County s Iraqi population - estimated at 70,000 people - has watched with dread the slow and painful extinguishing of their people in the land they occupied for almost 2,000 years. A Chaldean Catholic leader in San Diego relayed a message received from a man stuck in Iraq: By the time you guys do everything you re doing, there will be no Christians left (in Iraq). We ll all be dead. (utsandiego.com, 8/30/14) A Chaldean Christian bishop said the refusal of Iraq s Christians to abandon their faith in the face of annihilation is something that ought to open the eyes of those in the West. It looks like the end of the road for us, said Fr. Shabi. But thank God, people s faith is strong. They are relying on God and the Virgin Mary. (catholicsun.org, 8/25/14) Please Pray: O Most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Mercy, at this most critical time, we entrust the United States of America - and Iraq - to your loving care. We beg you to reclaim these lands for the glory of your Son. Look down with mercy upon us and touch the hearts of our people. Open our minds to the great worth of human life and to the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Grant us the wisdom to proclaim that God s law is the True Source of our rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. 14 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA It is a little early to remind you, but it is not if you want to start a novena. On November 23rd we celebrate the Feast of Christ the King it is also the end of ordinary time since after this feast we enter into Advent. We are also starting a class to study the world of Jesus Christ and introduce them to the wonder of this Divine and Human person. We cannot introduce Christ to others unless we have first been introduce to Him ourselves, and this is my purpose to offer Priest, Prophet, King Program - to provide an introduction to the Lord so that in coming to know Him, people might better introduce Him to others and to experience a personal relationship with Him as our Priest, Prophet, and King. To come to know the Lord this also would allow us to understand ourselves. Jesus Christ is a living, divine person who, as the Scriptures testify, accepted a human nature and lived a real human life. This extraordinary revelation offers humanity new hope, for God in Christ shows His love for us. The more we know Him the more we love Him, the more we will want others to know Him. Try to come to this presentation, it takes only 6 weeks, and 2 hours each, and you can chose a morning or evening time. Call me at or me at toticon@aol.com. This week we have CDs which I recommend that you to listen to and then pass them to others. Signs of Life by Dr. Scott Hahn, clears misconceptions about liturgical rituals and traditions. From the Foundation of the World by Curtis Martin. Again be the good missionary that brings souls to Christ with these CDs, you would never know from this side of heaven all the good you did.
