June 1, 2014 THE MAN WHO ALWAYS WENT TO MASS Seven or eight years ago I wrote a bulletin article while I was pastor at St. Matthew s. It was all about becoming a Catholic and encouraging people to evangelize and invite them to the riches of our faith. I made the point that in every parish there are people who faithfully attend Mass and are not Catholics. For some reason or another they have been attracted by the majesty and holiness of the Mass and just keep on coming. In some cases it is a faithful practicing Catholic husband or wife who leads by the power of example. These people are Catholics for all practical purposes they believe in the Eucharist and the Church, they just never got around to making it official and entering the faith. A few days after the article was published a woman called me and told me that her father was in the situation I had described. He and his wife had been married for well over thirty years and he was always at Mass with her. He had heard hundreds and hundreds of sermons and knew an awful lot about the Catholic Church. She wondered if I would see her father he really wanted to become a Catholic, but just never got around to it. Needless to say, it did not take very long to bring this exceptionally faithful Christian into the Catholic Church. It was a day of singular joy for him and his family especially his wonderful wife. She must have prayed for a long time for this special grace. St. John XXIII and the Second Vatican Council which he initiated ( ) happily gave a great impetus to ecumenism and a spirit of openness and understanding to other religions. This was a wonderful thing, but at the same time it had a downside. Some Catholics began to believe that one religion was as good as another and it didn t really make any difference what you believed as long as you were fundamentally a good person. This was, of course, not what the Second Vatican Council taught. Lumen Gentium, one of the Constitutions of Vatican II expresses it this way: This is the one Church of Christ which in the Creed is professed as one, holy, catholic and apostolic, (12*) which our Savior, after His Resurrection, commissioned Peter to shepherd,(74) and him and the other apostles to extend and direct with authority,(75) which He erected for all ages as "the pillar and mainstay of the truth".(76) This Church constituted and organized in the world as a society, subsists in the Catholic Church, which is governed by the successor of Peter and by the Bishops in communion with him,(13*) although many elements of sanctification and of truth are found outside of its visible structure. These elements, as gifts belonging to the Church of Christ, are forces impelling toward Catholic unity.

The Catholic Church, while respecting the consciences of those who are of different religions, is the Church that never forgets the words of Christ at the conclusion of Matthew s Gospel: Go into the whole world and teach all nations, baptizing them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them all that I have commanded you and know that I am with you all days even until the end of the world. (Mt 28 :19-20) Perhaps you can find some who are just waiting for an invitation to become Catholic. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald STEWARDSHIP 05/26/13 $25,341 05/25/14 $22,364 (-11.75%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish! This weekend s second collection is for The Religious Retirement Fund. PASTORAL COUNCIL On Sunday, June 29 th, members of the St. Aidan s Parish Council will be making themselves available to you in the St. Francis Prayer Garden. Bring your questions, thoughts, and suggestions about your Parish. We will be serving coffee and look forward to speaking with you. PENTECOST SUNDAY ATTENTION ALL EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION AND LECTORS Next weekend is Pentecost Sunday. All Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and Lectors will process out of the church with a lighted candle at the end of all masses representing Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. NOVENA IN HONOR OF ST. ANTHONY OF PADUA This year we will have a special Novena in Honor of St. Anthony of Padua. Prayers will be said at the 9:00 AM Mass for nine days beginning on June 4 th. St. Anthony is one of the most popular saints in the Catholic Church and is known as the Wonderworker because of his many miracles of grace and healing. Prayer cards will be available at the doors of the church and I encourage you to join with me in honoring this great saint. Father Mc Donald

RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT FUND This is what the Lord asks of you, only this This weekend, May 31st/June 1st, is the annual collection for the Religious Retirement Fund. Religious Sisters and Brothers who have been involved in education, health care and social ministry in the Diocese of Rockville Centre need our help. The stipends being earned by young members of Religious Communities are no longer enough to support the needs of the elderly members of their Communities. The number of elderly Religious in assisted living or nursing facilities continues to rise and health care costs are rising too. For this reason, the Diocese of Rockville Centre, for the past twenty-nine years, has committed to return to our Religious Communities a portion of our gifts of treasure, in appreciation for the many years of service to the people of our Diocese of these dedicated servants of Our Lord. Please come prepared next week to assist the elderly Religious with a once-a-year gift, as generous as your means will allow. These gifts will be distributed among the twenty-nine communities who serve our Diocese. Your gift may be placed in the mail or dropped in the collection basket on the weekend of May 31st/ June 1st. Brochures describing this appeal are available in the church or you may have received one at home. On behalf of the Religious who serve in our parishes and hospitals, we thank you for your generosity. CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS COURT ST. AIDAN #1577 Installation of the Court's new officers and new Junior Court officers will take place on Tuesday, June 10th at 7:00 PM in Church. Refreshments and a short business meeting will take place after the installation in Msgr. Kirwin Hall. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE During this month let us renew our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, incorporating prayers which will unite us fully to the Heart of Christ. Prayers that will express our gratitude for His Mercy and Love, especially for His Presence in the Eucharist. Since this devotion is about Christ s love for us let us put our trust in that love and find among our family members, friends, neighbors, and in our work place all those most in need of love and compassion, extending Jesus love and mercy to all, and our own love for them. Share your reactions and feedback by calling (516) x9592. St. Aidan s Pastoral Council tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish.

Catholics for Freedom of Religion Educating and Advocating for Freedom of Religion for All June 1, 2014 A America s First Freedom: Religious Liberty America s religious freedom was assured to all generations by the careful crafting of the 1 st amendment of the Bill of Rights. The robust freedom of religion envisioned by the founders has allowed our country to flourish without the religious strife seen elsewhere in the world. Americans were to be forever free to follow their conscience in the service of their God and maintain a morality that would sustain our constitutional freedoms. One of our Founding Fathers, John Adams, said, Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." As stated by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops: That is our American heritage, our most cherished freedom. It is the first freedom because if we are not free in our conscience and our practice of religion, all other freedoms are fragile. If citizens are not free in their own consciences, how can they be free in relation to others, or to the state? If our obligations and duties to God are impeded, or even worse, contradicted by the government, then we can no longer claim to be a land of the free, and a beacon of hope for the world. The period of June 21st to July 4th has been designated by the Bishops of the United States as the Fortnight For Freedom, a time of prayer, information and action in defense of religious liberty. Increasingly aggressive denials of religious freedom are found on college campuses, in the military, in the marketplace, workplace and social services. Since January of 2012 we have seen the vise that is the HHS mandate, sometimes called the Abortion Pill Mandate, tightening around our Catholic institutions a vise that, left unchecked, will crush the life and liberty out of Catholic practices and institutions in a way unimagined by us all. In opposition to this government mandate coming out of the Affordable Care Act, approximately 96 lawsuits representing over 300 plaintiffs have been filed, including by the Diocese of Rockville Centre which joined with the Archdiocese of New York to protect our 1 st amendment religious freedom. During this Fortnight we must pray together that we might stand together in strength and courage with our faith in God and our love of America s freedoms guiding the actions we must take. Thomas Jefferson said, The God who gave us life gave us liberty. These rights to life and liberty are not ours to lose. They were gifted to us by God and conveyed to us by our forefathers. We are this day charged as rightful stewards to defend these rights for future generations. Fortnight events in the Diocese of Rockville Centre include: Bishop Murphy will celebrate the opening Mass which marks the beginning of the Fortnight on June 21st at 5:00 PM at the St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Pl, Rockville Centre, NY Father Philip K. Eichner, President of Kellenberg High School and Chairman of the Board of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights will be the distinguished guest speaker of Catholics for Freedom of Religion on Wednesday, June 25th, 7:00 PM at the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception, 440 West Neck Road, Huntington, NY The second annual rally, Religious Freedom: Our First Amendment Right will be held Saturday, June 28th at 10am in the auditorium of St. John the Baptist High School, 1170 Montauk Hwy, West Islip, NY You are invited to join in praying the Rosary in public prayer and witness in front of the school after the rally. Bishop Brennan will celebrate the closing Mass of the Fortnight at 12:15 PM on July 4th at the St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Pl, Rockville Centre, NY Check your church bulletin and for additional events during the Fortnight For Freedom.

LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA By tradition the Catholic Church dedicates each month of the year to certain devotion. In June, it is the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which represents Christ s love for all mankind. Most of us know this devotion as part of our celebrations. Since childhood we have known and did the nine first Fridays, we recite the Litany of the Sacred Heart, and annually we celebrate the feast of the Sacred Heart. There are pictures and statues of Jesus open heart in our devotionals. The devotion to the Sacred Heart most clearly distinguishes Catholicism from all other forms of Christianity; certainly from the thousands nominally Protestant denominations, which after the Protestant Revolution undermined all doctrinal foundations to this devotion. Jesus revealed to us when He told us Learn from me that I am meek and humble of HEART. It was revealed on Calvary when the heart of Jesus was pierced by the soldiers lance and blood and water flowed. Great saints and mystics were especially devoted to the Sacred Heart. On June 16, 1675, after the Feast of Corpus Christi, Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque and requested that the Feast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated on the Friday after the octave of the Feast of Corpus Christi in reparation for the ingratitude of all mankind for the sacrifice that Christ had made for them. The Sacred Heart of Jesus represents not simply His physical heart but His love for all mankind. We believe that our Lord Jesus, who became man so that He might have a human heart and evoke in ours a corresponding love for Him, will strengthen our weakness and protect us from all evil. He will give us all graces to be saved, and that is just because HE LOVES US! We have in our Kiosks CDs which teach about the Love and Mercy of our God. I suggest that you look for them and after you listen to them, give them away to others who will understand Christ s Love for all of us! Toti Conforti THANK YOU FROM DEACON JOSEPH SCOLARO Dear Parishioners of St. Aidan's: I want to thank you for your incredibly kind and warm welcome this year. Regretfully my assignment has come to an end, but it has been a joy and a blessing to serve you as a deacon over these past months. I have learned so many valuable lessons from both the wonderful people and priests of the parish which will help me transition to serving in my next assignment as a priest. St. Aidan's has left an impression on me of what a vibrant, devout, loving, and truly Catholic community should be. As I begin my final preparations for ordination, please do keep me in your prayers, and you will certainly remain in mine. I look forward to the honor of returning on June 22nd to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass for all of you! In Christ, Deacon Joseph Scolaro
