3 July 12, 2015 SUMMER READING SUGGESTIONS The New York Times always has a special summer reading issue. So I figured if it s good enough for the Times, I d give you some of my suggestions and let you know what I m reading. It has always been my belief that one of the best things parents can give their children is to introduce them to the joy of reading. It was something my own parents did by reading to us at bedtime and taking us repeatedly to the Garden City Library. To get to my suggestions: I just finished rereading The Robe by Lloyd Douglas. Lloyd Douglas was a Protestant minister, but later on in life he began writing religious novels. Father Andrew Greeley, a noted priest author here in the United States, wrote an introduction to the new edition and said it was a book he read at 14 and the book absolutely changed his life. The book is so well written and continually interesting it does not drag along like some more contemporary novels and it could be read by Carmelite nuns. So great was it that the Robe was made into a cinemascope movie. I highly recommend it and urge you to get your teen age kids and grandchildren to look at it. Another novel that I am currently rereading is Allan Drury s Advise and Consent. It is all about the confirmation process for the Secretary of State and the political machinations that go on. Although it is, of course, somewhat dated (no cell phones are mentioned) you will find it thoroughly entertaining and informative. If you have a Kindle, both of these books are available on it. Now to get to the religious books. Thanks to the generosity of two people I was the recipient of two books that I think would very much interest many of you. The first is a collection of the Daily Homilies of Pope Francis and is titled Encountering Truth. The sub title is The Morning Homilies from St. Martha s Chapel. It is edited by Father Antonio Spadaro, S.J. and has a preface by Father Frederico Lombardi, S.J. This is a book that is excellent for meditation and you can read any one of the homilies all by itself. So if your time is limited and you can only spare a few moments, this book is just for you and you will get a lot out of it. I think ten minutes a day with these homilies will really perk up your spiritual outlook and prayer life. Everything is beautifully simple and thoroughly understandable. The other gift is The Francis Miracle and is authored by John Allen, Jr. The dust jacket explains the book s content: Inside the Transformation of the Pope and the Church. Allen is a noted student of the Vatican and recent popes. He knows a lot and lets you in on a great deal of interesting background. You will learn about Pope Francis and his ideas and his background. You won t be bored.

4 Finally, there is one more book that I recommend to everyone I can and that is David Mc Cullough s masterful and riveting biography Truman. It is long, but I could not put it down. (Parenthetically any historical works by McCullough are simply outstanding and well worthwhile.) He has a new book on the Wright Brothers, but I haven t got around to it yet. I did, however, hear excerpts and learned so much. Lastly, a word to my young friends. Whatever you do, read. It will enrich you in so many ways and refine your thinking and dramatically improve your writing. I particularly urge you to pick up biographies of significant men and women. When you see what they did with their lives, you may get an idea of some improvements you can make in your own. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald Today s readings are about being chosen and sent. The prophet Amos was chosen by the Lord and sent to use his talents for the people of God. The Gospel recounts the story of the sending of the 12 disciples. St. Paul reminds us that we, too, are chosen. To whom have I been sent? For what have I been chosen? STEWARDSHIP 07/06/14 $26,069 07/05/15 $25,004 (-3.94%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. Next weekend s second collection is for The Marist Brothers Missions. MEMORIALS AVAILABLE Memorials are available at any time. Please call the Rectory office at (516) x9101 if interested. 5 SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR PERSECUTED CHRISTIANS The number of persecuted Christians in the world has topped a staggering 100 million according to a recent report from Open Doors USA, an organization that assists persecuted Christians. Paying homage recently to the courage of the Apostles and that of the first Christian community, Pope Francis referenced the atrocious, inhuman and incomprehensible persecutions, sadly present in many parts of the world today, often under the silent gaze of all. Bishop Murphy urges us to reach out and protect these victims who are suffering who are our so often the targets of violence and murder, along with other ethnic and religious minorities. To that end, a special collection will be taken up in our parish the weekend of August 1st and 2nd to assist those who are suffering religious persecution in Syria and Iraq and wherever needed. Please continue to pray for peace and if you are able, to support this special collection to assist for our brothers and sisters in Christ. QUOTES FROM POPE FRANCIS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM I cannot fail to recall the many instances of injustice and persecution which daily afflict religious minorities, and Christians in particular, in various parts of our world. Communities and individuals today find themselves subjected to barbaric acts of violence: they are evicted from their homes and native lands, sold as slaves, killed, beheaded, crucified or burned alive, under the shameful and complicit silence of many. November 25, 2014 PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Christine Schifaudo, Christine Lucivero, Cecilia Han, Geraldo Peixoto, Kimberly Holmes, Father Brian Dalton, Stacy Test, Owen Hogan, Roseanne Mushorn, John Moore, Rita Amendola, Diana Coscia, Carol White, Joseph Fitzgerald, Virginia Fallon, Barney Rinaldi, Jeremy Hogan, Rosemary Herron, Toti Conforti, Carol Nesbit, Brian Hoffarth DECEASED: Mike McHugh, Marie Dissinger, Kathleen Kehoe, Jose Coimbra, Perry V. Genovese and for those who have died serving our country. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION Our parish offers Eucharistic Adoration the first Friday of every month from 1:00-3:00 PM for PEACE. Why not come an spend some time with Our Lord in prayer for peace.

7 MARIST BROTHERS OF THE SCHOOLS The Little Brothers of Mary Brother James McKnight will be speaking at our parish July 18th/19th on behalf of the Marist Brothers of the Schools. There will be a second collection. The Marist Brothers were founded by Saint Marcellin Champagnat on January 2, 1817 and our primary mission is TO MAKE JESUS KNOWN AND LOVED. We wish to attend to the needs of the poor and most neglected youth. Mary is our model. Our original name was The Little Brothers of Mary and we still prefer this name. We have missions in more than 80 different countries and now number about 3,800 Brothers. We have been in the United States since 1886 and have schools and ministries in 8 different States. Our foreign missions are many and we now have a new program called the Ad Gentes Program which came about at the request of the late Saint John Paul II. His request has been answered and we now have new missions in Cambodia, Thailand and Bangladesh.

8 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION "Regardless of what a narrow majority of the Supreme Court may declare at this moment in history, the nature of the human person and marriage remains unchanged and unchangeable." Archbishop Joseph Kurtz, Louisville, KY, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), June 26, 2015 A Warning from Canada: "I want to warn America to expect severe erosion of First Amendment freedoms (from) the U.S. Supreme Court mandate (of) same-sex marriage. The consequences have played out in Canada for ten years now, and they are truly Orwellian in nature and scope. In Canada, freedoms of speech, press, religion, and association have suffered greatly due to government pressure." (thepublicdiscourse.com, 4/24/15) Catholics For Freedom of Religion (CFFR) Defending Religious Freedom: "As the battle for protecting religious liberty in the U.S. advances in the wake of the Supreme Court decision redefining marriage, a Catholic grassroots organization dedicated to promoting and defending religious liberty in the U.S. has expanded its reach and drawn the attention of the U.S. bishops." (ncregister.com, 6/29/15) "The Diocese of Rockville Centre, N.Y., and CFFR cosponsored the June 25 Fortnight For Freedom Rally for Religious Freedom, where Professor Robert George, chairman of the U.S. commission on International Religious Freedom, delivered the keynote address. The event drew more than 700 participants, including representatives of the Mormon and Evangelical churches." "It is critically important that America's Catholics heed our bishops' call for activism in defense of religious liberty," said Prof. George (ncregister.com, 6/29/15) "Jesus Christ, with great love, taught unambiguously that from the beginning marriage is the lifelong union of one man and one woman. As Catholic bishops, we follow our Lord and will continue to teach and act according to this truth." 13 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA I usually write for the bulletin a week in advance, and so the last week, it was the week I was in the hospital having and recovering from surgery. Still I wanted to share with you my experience, since it was such a way to be closer to our Lord, through it all! I am one to be called by God into old age, a call not to be given to many, not given to the ones in my own family, all of whom went to be with the Father even before middle age. My Lord has given me all I am and have, now I must give it all back to Him and keep under His will alone, these later years of my life. As my physical eyesight weakens, the eyes of my Faith get strong and I see my Lord and his Love in everything. As my hearing gets reduced the ears of my heart can hear the whisper of His loving voice. As my mind and memory fades or becomes less alert, I remain aware of His Real Presence to focus on. I do not need thoughts or words, I need just to be there with Him. Now, as sickness overtakes me, as my legs are weak, my walking is difficult, I can walk in God s path while I am held in His embrace. And if my heart shows signs, after the works of years, I pray it may expand in love for all people and for my Creator, resting secure and grateful in His Divine, loving heart until the time of His call when I will be by His side forever. Thank you for all your prayers, each one of them was and is felt. Pray that I can continue to work for the Lord; it is my greatest desire to make known our Faith, to proclaim the name of Jesus to everyone in my path. I ask all of you to keep listening to the teachings of the CDs you find in the Parish s kiosks, and pass them to others in need of this knowledge The Holy Spirit would guide you. God Bless you all. Toti Conforti CELL PHONES, IPADS, ETC. COLLECTION We are still collecting cell phones, ipads, ipods and chargers for Sister Diane, a Dominican Sister, who lives at Notre Dame.
