3 August 31, 2014 ANY DIRT? Just yesterday, Wednesday, Pope Francis really hit the nail on the head. He was speaking at a general audience and warned about gossip and division in the parish. He is an eminently practical man and realizes that the day to day life in a parish has certain inherent problems and chronic difficulties. He spoke about two: gossip and division. Gossip is, of course, a perennial popular entertainment. People like to know and they like to tell. Some gossip is perfectly harmless and normal. We all like to know what is happening in our place of work. It s really not sinful to say that Mr. So and So may be getting a promotion and Miss X really enjoyed her vacation. Nor is it wrong to speculate. For example, clerics like to talk about who may become the pastor of such and such parish or who may become the head of some important organization in the diocese. Parishioners like to wonder where the pastor went on vacation and for how long. No harm in that. (If you really want to know, I went to one of my former parishes, St. John the Evangelist in Center Moriches, and did a little pastoral work and relaxed. I must admit I came back here several times to keep my eyes on things.) On the other hand there is gossip that is at the least uncharitable and at the worst malicious. A great rule is to try to say only good things about people and avoid the critical and unkind. There are times, of course, when it is right and maybe even obligatory to criticize. God has given us the faculty to judge and it is not being judgmental, for example, to criticize a public figure who advocates abortion and/or euthanasia. That is simply being a responsible Christian. Jesus warned against judging: Do not judge lest you be judged. (Cf. Mt. 7:1 ff) The judging he is talking about is rash judgment judgments made without knowing the facts. Also we must remember that the motives and guilt or innocence of another can in the last analysis only be judged by God Himself. Let me give a very simple example. If somebody steals my car (God forbid!), I can certainly say that he was very wrong to do so. On the other hand, I do not know what possessed him to do such an evil thing. Perhaps he has mental problems. Who knows? We have to leave the judgment of motives to God. We are only human and limited.

4 In every parish there is always disagreement about how things should be done. The fact is different parishes and pastors emphasize different things. No matter what you do, you can never please everybody in a parish, a school, a company or anything! A parish is supposed to be a community of charity, compassion and understanding. We all have different approaches. The thing is to respect each other. Our enemy, the devil, loves division in the Church or in a parish. It allows him to work fulltime and at the same time it can paralyze (at least partially) the efforts of the Church or the parish. Time is spent on useless arguing and discussion while people continue to fall away. The same is true in any family. If you spend a lot of time listening to a family member who loves to cause trouble, you are wasting your energy. Spend your time on loving each other and don t bother arguing too much. It only achieves sadness and unhappiness. The Pope says we should look for the good in one another and not the bad points. He is so right. I am going to renew my own efforts in this direction and hope you will do the same. Happy Labor Day! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald In today s second reading, St. Paul exhorts the Romans to total stewardship. Brothers and sisters, he urges offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God. STEWARDSHIP 08/25/13 $23,183 08/24/14 $22,576 (-2.62%) Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. Next weekend s second collection is for FOSA (Friends of St. Aidan) MASS TIME CHANGE Beginning September 8th, the 12:15 PM daily will be changed to 12:30 PM.

5 FRIENDS OF SAINT AIDAN (FOSA) SECOND COLLECTION SEPTEMBER 6TH/7TH Friends of St. Aidan is a fund that was established with the sole purpose of providing tuition assistance to those families who are not able to pay for Catholic Education at Saint Aidan School only. These are members of our Saint Aidan School family that are being faced with the difficult decision of leaving the school because of a traumatic event (job loss, family problems, etc.) in their lives that makes paying for a Catholic Education impossible. The reason we established FOSA is due to two factors; 1-The Diocese Tomorrow s Hope Fund has been depleted and more families are looking toward it than ever before to help pay for Catholic Education. 2-We can no longer pass the burden on to the other families in the school. Perhaps you might consider a donation as a memorial to a loved one. At a time of loss many families inquire about memorial donations to our school and our parish. This is a wonderful opportunity to memorialize a loved one. We have memorial cards that are sent to the families of the person for whom the memorial has been purchased acknowledging the gift. The funds we raise will only go to those families in need as determined by the Pastor and Principal. Donations envelopes are available in church and in the Rectory office. For information please call Lynn Przeniczny at (516) x9104. If you can t feed a hundred people, than feed just one Mother Theresa Make a difference. Make the hope and dream of Catholic Education a reality. Make a donation. Thank you and God Bless! MAY WE HAVE YOUR ADDRESS? In an effort to improve communication with our parishioners, please send us your address so that we can keep everyone up-to-date on important events that might occur from time to time in between Sunday bulletins. Please it to Rosemarym@staidanparish.org.

11 2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal Serving God by Serving Others Helping to Provide Homes for Children in Need Michael was 15-years old and already had a history of serious psychiatric disturbances when he turned to Catholic Charities. He had been only ten when he lost contact with his family. The state had issued restraining orders against his mother and father for abuse and they had both willingly given up custody. Social Services felt he was not a likely candidate for adoption because of his age and history. In a nutshell, he was a kid facing the world alone, abandoned by everyone he ever knew or loved. That's when he came to a Catholic Charities Teaching Family Home. This unique residential treatment program matches emotionally disturbed kids with teaching parents. Teaching parents are married couples who care for the children in their own homes while teaching them everyday social skills that most of us take for granted. It was Michael's last hope. His erratic behavior had left previous social workers wondering if they could ever get through to him. Jeff and Linda, a Catholic Charities Teaching Family Home couple, had a hunch they could help him. They also believed he might have an undetected developmental disability. They were right. While there were some serious setbacks, caring and patience paid off. Today, Michael is a happy son to a loving adoptive parent and is part of a stable family. Linda and Jeff knew that what Michael so desperately needed was what every one of us desire; to be loved and accepted unconditionally. When you donate to the Catholic Ministries Appeal, you provide support for children like Michael. You help them to live full and happy lives! THANK YOU!

15 LIGHTHOUSE CATHOLIC MEDIA This week everything returns to normal. School starts, the children and adults are going back to regular hours, and, of course, it will take some time to get used to. The good side of this is you will have time and space to explore God s call and will and look into God s gifts you have received. We have a duty to use His gifts, to give them away, to acknowledge the Giver. There is one thing that is absolutely our own, and that is our will. Anything we have can be taken away, but our will is irrevocably ours, hence nothing really matters except that we conform our will to God s will and call. What matters is what we let God do to us. I always remember that God sent the angel to Our Lady, not to ask her to do something, but to let something be done. Since God does things better than us, let s abandon our will to His. Remember if you give Him only half of you, He can make you only half of a saint. This week we have some very good CDs. Real Womanhood by Lisa Cotter. She gets the truth about what it means to be an authentic woman. What s So Great About Being Catholic? by Jason Evert who shows us the beauty and treasures of the Faith. He tells us there is only one reason to be Catholic, because it s TRUE! How to Date Your Soulmate by Jason Evert. He shows us how to practice courtship without compromise. It is rooted in God s plan for the human heart. A great CD to give away to couples. Pray about new opportunities to spread what you learn from these CDs. Watch how the Holy Spirit will lead the way. Buy one or two or how many you can afford. After you listen to them give them away! That is the secret to fulfill God s plan for souls away from Him!
