3 August 30, 2015 CATHOLIC OR NOT When a bishop is consecrated the Book of the Gospels is held over his head as a reminder that he must preach the total Gospel and defend the Catholic faith. Every so often one of the problems that surfaces is that a Catholic institution, university, college, high school, hospital etc. may decide that it has an interpretation of Catholic belief and/or practice that is not in accord with Catholic teaching. The bishop is put in the unenviable position of asserting his authority and responding charitably but firmly. He is obliged to make certain that the integrity of the Catholic religion is maintained and that there is no confusion as to what the Catholic Church teaches. Sometimes this comes at a heavy price when the bishop is severely criticized for being narrow minded and not in tune with current thought. The fact is that he is only doing his job protecting the flock of God from false teaching. You may recall that last week I alluded to the case of a young woman who defended the Catholic faith in a college that is not Catholic but has a Catholic tradition. In her case it was not only once, but twice. She had to speak up against Catholic bashing and oppose an attack on the Church s doctrine on the sanctity of human life. These two cases and others suggest to me that there needs to be much more discussion on what makes an institution Catholic. There are certain definite and non negotiable requisites that must be present in any institution which calls itself Catholic. Some, but not all of these, are: The institution must operate in accord with the Gospel and the doctrinal and moral teaching of the Catholic Church. While there may be discussion and speculation, there should never be anything taught that is contrary to Catholicism. The institution is the servant of the truth and has the responsibility to teach and practice Catholicism. If it doesn t do that, it is not Catholic. It may claim that is in the Catholic tradition but that does not make it Catholic. It may do an immense amount of good, but either it is Catholic or not. While institutions of higher learning are that and not simply catechetical centers, they must adhere to Christ and His Church. Catholic institutions must always joyfully and enthusiastically proclaim Jesus Christ and His Church. There cannot be any half-hearted Catholicism or any apology for the Gospel. This is true across the board. Whatever the institution, parish school, university, nursing home, the institution is expected to represent Christ and not the trendy views of a society that has largely fallen away from God. There must be clarity of thought and the avoidance of a cloudy ambiguity that leaves people in a spiritual fog. Catholic institutions that sow doubt and confusion have lost the right to call themselves Catholic and should have the integrity to admit they are secular entities. That is the honest approach. Catholic institutions will always suffer from imperfection, sin and the other problems that are the result of original sin. At the same time, they must make every effort to be places of charity and Gospel joy. Like our Holy Father, Pope Francis, they must try to radiate continually the peace of the Gospel. We are like those institutions. We may not always succeed, but we have to keep on trying.

4 Finally, to say an institution is not Catholic does not imply criticism. It is something else and may well do an excellent job. There are many reasons why Catholic colleges, universities, and hospitals have willingly given up the title Catholic. The biggest I imagine is money. Some have found that they cannot exist without government aid and others wanted more respect in the eyes of the secular world. Whatever the factors, that is their business and, as I said, they may do endless amounts of good. Our concern is that what calls itself Catholic is exactly what it says no ands, ifs and buts! In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James Mc McDonald ST. AIDAN S ROSARY ALTAR SOCIETY St. Aidan s Rosary Altar Society asks all members to attend the Corporate Mass on Sunday, September 6th at 9:00 AM. The Mass will remember deceased Rosarians Diane Vesley and Sally Farragher. Please assemble in the St. Francis Garden before Mass (8:45 AM). We will say a decade of the Rosary to honor the Blessed Mother. Our first monthly general meeting will be held on Monday, September 14th at 7:30 PM. Come on down and say the Rosary. Find out about the upcoming year. We will get together and learn more about each other. We will enjoy an Ice Cream Social and all are welcome. New members are always welcome. Every worthwhile gift, every genuine benefit comes from above, says St. James in the second reading. But, he reminds us, true worship of God involves using those good gifts to benefit the less fortunate. Good stewardship is not optional; it is the hallmark of our faith! STEWARDSHIP 08/24/14 $22,596 08/23/15 $23,107 (+2.25%) LIFE CENTER OF LONG ISLAND COLLECTION 02/23/14 $ 2,276 08/23/15 $ 3,290 Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. Next weekend s second collection is for FOSA (Friends of St. Aidan).

6 FRIENDS OF SAINT AIDAN (FOSA) SECOND COLLECTION SEPTEMBER 5TH/6TH Friends of St. Aidan is a fund that was established with the sole purpose of providing tuition assistance to those families who are not able to pay for Catholic Education at Saint Aidan School only. These are members of our Saint Aidan School family that are being faced with the difficult decision of leaving the school because of a traumatic event (job loss, family problems, etc.) in their lives that makes paying for a Catholic Education impossible. The reason we established FOSA is due to two factors; 1-The Diocese Tomorrow s Hope Fund has been depleted and more families are looking toward it than ever before to help pay for Catholic Education. 2-We can no longer pass the burden on to the other families in the school. Perhaps you might consider a donation as a memorial to a loved one. At a time of loss many families inquire about memorial donations to our school and our parish. This is a wonderful opportunity to memorialize a loved one. We have memorial cards that are sent to the families of the person for whom the memorial has been purchased acknowledging the gift. The funds we raise will only go to those families in need as determined by the Pastor and Principal. Donations envelopes are available in church and in the Rectory office. For information please call Lynn Przeniczny at (516) x9104. If you can t feed a hundred people, than feed just one Mother Theresa Make a difference. Make the hope and dream of Catholic Education a reality. Make a donation. Thank you and God Bless!

7 QUOTES FROM POPE FRANCIS ON RELIGIOUS FREEDOM What does freedom mean? It is certainly not doing whatever you want, allowing yourself to be dominated by the passions, to pass from one experience to another without discernment, to follow the fashions of the day; freedom does not mean, so to speak, throwing everything that you don t like out the window Let us not be afraid of life commitments, commitments that take up and concern our entire life! In this way our life will be fruitful. And this is freedom; to have the courage to make these decisions with generosity. May 4, ST. 10 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION Religious freedom... has to do with immunity from coercion in civil society." Vatican II - Declaration on Religious Liberty Some school districts continue to resist any accommodation of student religious expression often resulting in many years of legal battles. Pocono Mountain S.D., PA: A 5th grade student was barred from distributing invitations to a Christmas party at her church. After years in lower courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals found in the student's favor and ruled elementary students have free-speech rights protected by the First Amendment. (adfmedia.org, 12/6/13; edweek.org, 3/12/13) Baldwinsville S.D., NY: A poster created by a Kindergartener for an assignment about saving the earth was rejected for showing Jesus along with various pictures depicting recycling and the words, "The only way to save the world". The teacher covered the picture of Jesus. When the parents objected to their child's poster being censored, a 10-year legal battle ensued and was finally sent to the U.S. Supreme Court. (wnd.com, 3/13/10) In both of these cases, the school districts spent years in court and spent hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars - apparently because of an overwrought fear that the school might be seen as "endorsing" religion. (firstamendmentcenter.org) As the Alliance Defending Freedom letter to PA schools explains, "The Supreme Court has made it clear that students do not shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate." "The Supreme Court has definitely held that religious expression - whether spoken, written, or symbolic - is protected by the First Amendment." (adfmedia.org/ News, 12/6/13) "...our grandchildren will pay the full price if we allow our freedom to be relinquished." Barbara Samuells, president Catholics For Freedom of Religion Mark your Calendar: Thursday, September 10th, 7:30 PM, St. Patrick Church, 280 E Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787, in the church. Come and learn more about how our religious freedoms are being undermined and how you can help to preserve them.
