OCTOBER 2, 2016 HUMAN LIFE-WHAT A WONDERFUL GIFT! I'll call them Joe and Mary, but that's not their real names. I have known them since they were teenagers and officiated at their marriage. They both came from good Catholic families and were always at Mass. They live out of state and are very much involved in their parish and have two boys. One is from China (he is seven) and can't wait to receive his First Holy Communion. The other was born here in the United States. Right now they are on the verge of adopting two little girls from China. As you might imagine, they are immensely happy as are their two sons. If only the two girls realized the great family they are about to join. Let me tell you about another family. I first met them when I was a newly ordained priest at St. Matthew in Dix Hills. They would have me for dinner and I might add that the wife was an absolutely fantastic cook. The husband was not a Catholic, but soon enough he came into the Catholic Church and made it a practice to attend the first Mass every Sunday. Their only sadness was they could not have any children and in the early 70's they applied to adopt a child and were totally surprised when in a very short period of time they got their little boy. He had already been baptized, but we had a special ceremony to welcome a baptized child to the Church and then a great party. Of all the parties I have ever attended as a priest, that one at their home on a Sunday afternoon in March still stands out. The new parents and the whole family were delirious with joy. After well over forty years, I still recall that day. The joy only increased. Very soon afterwards they had a little boy that was like a miracle and a few years after that the dad called me in the middle of night to tell me that God sent them a little girl. And guess what? I baptized her and am her godfather. These couples are ordinary people who lead ordinary lives but they are extraordinarily wonderful people. They love God and each other and they are just crazy about the children God gave them. Truth be told, they are like you and the other tremendous people in our parish. They love their kids and will do anything at all to help them. I tell the kids in my Faith Formation Class (CCD) how much their parents love them. Today in the United States is Respect Life Sunday. It's a great time to think about how grateful we should be for the gift of family and the wonderful opportunity we have to show our children and grandchildren how much we love them. For both children and parents, you can never tell each other enough how much you love and appreciate one another. This is also a time to show respect, love, compassion and understanding to the elderly.

One of the problems facing more families than we might think is infertility. This is a tremendous cross. Just this past April the Diocese of Rockville Centre opened the Gianna Center at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip. One of the main purposes of this initiative is to help couples achieve the gift of a child through means that are moral and in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church. For further information, please call the Gianna Center I urge you to reaffirm the dignity and sacredness of all human life from conception to natural death. Deepen your own family life and support all the efforts of the Catholic Church to enthusiastically endorse and proclaim the Gospel of Life. In Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS All animals, great and small, will be blessed in the St. Francis Prayer Garden on Tuesday, October 4th at 4:00 PM. All animals welcome! In case of rain they will blessed under the portico of the main entrance to the church. PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK & DECEASED SICK: Virginia Fallon, Barney Rinaldi, Joseph Fitzgerald, Judy Eberson-Kostovik, Joan McDermott, Mark Matthews, Kathleen Gattis, Joyce French, Chris Lynch, Terry Laughlin, Michael Vladich, Anthony Rosario, Kimberly Kurz, Catherine Reardon, Bob Hesse, Margaret Cacioppo, Audrey Scott, Ann Tartaglia, Philip Capobianco, Deacon Frank Love, Sharon Devis, Preciosa Punsal, John Baglione, Gale Lancieri, Ann Hartigan, Toti Conforti, Rose Cascio, Christine Torres, Bridget Toradeck, Ann Cochrane DECEASED: Harold Taxter, James McMahon and for all those who have died serving our country. REMEMBERING OUR SERVICEMEN & WOMEN Protect our service men and women, Lord Jesus, as we continue to pray for world peace.

RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY This Sunday, October 2nd, is Respect Life Sunday. As we celebrate Respect Life Sunday, we are reminded that the assaults on human dignity come in many forms. The Respect Life Office is charged with deepening our already strong commitment to pro-life activities and parish education. Please support this vital work through participation in the special Respect Life envelope collection. Your prayers and assistance are greatly appreciated. ST. AIDAN S CYO Monthly meeting will be held on Monday, October 3rd at 7:30 PM in the Sts. Peter & Paul Room in the Finnamore Parish Center. New volunteers are always needed to assist in the administration of our youth sports programs. In particular we are looking for a coordinator for our Swimming Program. All are welcome. For further information please contact Kevin Kiley at (516) after 8:00 PM or at KILEY@OPTONLINE.NET. LITURGY CORNER The Eucharistic Prayer then continues with the epiclesis, in which through the prayer of the celebrant, the Church implores that by the power of the Holy Spirit, our gifts offered by human hands will be consecrated, that is, become Christ s Body and Blood, and that the unblemished sacrificial Victim consumed in Communion may be for the salvation of all those who will par take of it. PEANUT BUTTER GANG Join us on Saturday, October 8th th at 8:15 AM in the East Campus cafeteria to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the hungry and homeless on Long Island. Children under the age of 9 cannot be accommodated; children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Adults must have taken the Virtus Training. Due to logistics, you have to pre-register at our address: peanutbuttergang@staidanparish.org by Wednesday, September 5 th in order to participate. This month we ask each volunteer to bring a jar of peanut butter, a jar of jelly, and at least 2 loaves of BREAD. Thank you. 7 CATHOLICS FOR FREEDOM OF RELIGION Christians must beware of a "polite persecution that is cloaked in a disguise of culture, modernity and progress." Pope Francis Unjust California Bill Threatening Religious Freedom Revised: Thanks to the prayers of many and the support of Los Angeles Catholic Archbishop Gomez, Bishop Blake of the Church of God in Christ, nearly 150 Christian, Jewish and Muslim faith leaders, and many activist organizations, legislation that would have jeopardized the religious freedom of faith-based higher education, has been amended and no longer threatens access to state funding. The legislature was flooded with letters and messages saying the original bill violated religious freedom. The so-called "Equality in Higher Education Act" would have forced religious schools that receive state funds, or whose students receive state aid, to adopt practices that conflict with their beliefs and teachings. It would mean faith-based institutions would no longer be able to determine for themselves the scope of their religious convictions as applied in student conduct policies, housing and restroom/ locker facilities, and other matters of religious expression and campus life. Religious schools would be vulnerable to anti-discrimination lawsuits and unprecedented government policing. "This is a huge win for progress and diversity in higher education," said the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty. (lifepacific.edu, 8/31/16; latimes.com, 9/1/16; opposesb1146.com) Pray, Learn and Act to preserve religious liberty. Visit Event: Monday, October 10th at 8:00 PM, Dr. John Hassett, MD, will present "The Affordable Care Act and the Complete Lives System", Our Lady of Mercy RC Church, lower church meeting room, 500 S Oyster Bay Rd, Hicksville, NY STEWARDSHIP 09/27/15 $23,478 09/25/16 $24,701 (+5.2%) ST. PIUS X ENRICHED LIVING FACILITY 09/20/15 $ 4,700 09/25/16 $ 6,016 (+28.00%) This weekend s second collection is for Respect Life. Thank you for your kind and generous support of our parish. ST. PIUS X ENRICHED LIVING FACILITY The response to last week s second collection for our retired priests at St. Pius X Enriched Living Facility was outstanding. Thank you to all who have been supportive of this endeavor. If you have not yet considered a gift to this effort, please consider making a donation today. Brochures describing this appeal are available in church today and your gift may be mailed by using one of the postage-paid envelopes also available in church. Through your generosity, we can care for our elderly priests in the manner best suited to their needs. On behalf of all the priests serving our Diocese, and all current and future residents of St. Pius X in Amityville, I thank you for your concern and generosity.

Wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an Oasis of Mercy. -Pope Francis Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: The Gospel s mandate and the unwavering emphasis of Pope Francis Year of Mercy is that our love for God must be a reflection of our love for one another, especially the weak and vulnerable among us. Our Diocese s annual Catholic Ministries Appeal is a daily response to that call and enables us to increase our outreach to those most in need. As the last few months of the 2016 Appeal and Pope Francis Year of Mercy are upon us, I am writing to ask that if you have not already done so, you would consider making a donation to the 2016 Catholic Ministries Appeal. You would be joining with me, with your Pastor and with many of your neighbors, to help bring God s love and mercy to His people. There are so many of our neighbors in need of our help; your support will help us to answer those calls. Again, please join with us. I assure you that as One Faith, Family and Community we will make a lasting difference in the lives of our brothers and sisters on Long Island. With my prayers and gratitude, I am Sincerely yours in Christ, Bishop of Rockville Centre 2016 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL- CHURCH OF ST. AIDAN 2015 GOAL: $172,900 PLEDGED: $135,818 # OF GIFTS: 604 AVERAGE GIFT: $

Dear Friends: Today, I am writing to tell you how grateful I have always been for your commitment to our Parish and for all of the ways that you have supported our entire Catholic Church here on Long Island. One of those ways has been through the Catholic Ministries Appeal. The 2016 Appeal is almost drawing to a close and I am sure there may be numerous reasons why you may have not yet made a donation to this year s Appeal. To be perfectly honest, I only just made my annual gift earlier this month because my pledge card migrated to the bottom of my desk and I just found it! I am certain that you also receive many requests from other worthwhile charitable organizations and that you always try to respond to them to the best of your abilities. But this program is truly something very special to our community as it touches so many; more than 600,000 people are served every year because of this Appeal! As an example, this past June, 3 men were ordained into the Priesthood, and earlier in May, another 7 men were ordained as Permanent Deacons. Their formation and education are made possible because of funds from the Catholic Ministries Appeal. These men will be serving in our churches throughout Long Island because of the generosity of the people of this Diocese. People like you! More than 1,000 patients and their families are being cared for in hospitals all over Long Island. Because of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, they will have the prayers and companionship of highly trained and caring Hospital Chaplain Ministers. Last month thousands of college freshman started their first day of class. On secular colleges right here on Long Island, these students had the welcoming presence of a Catholic family away from home through our College Campus Ministry program. Serving approximately 3,500 college students every month is made possible by your donations to the Catholic Ministries Appeal. Each year more than 200,000 hot, nutritious meals are delivered to homebound seniors through Catholic Charities Meals on Wheels program. It s another striking example of the importance of your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. AND, how many charities are able to assure you that 100% of your donation will be used exclusively to fund the ministries supported by the Appeal? I recognize how supportive you always are of the needs of our parish and to the needs of this community. But if it is possible, I hope you will consider renewing your donation to help us to serve our neighbors in ever-increasing need. Jesus and Mary, Monsignor James M. McDonald Pastor
