ASK THE ASSOCIATE Do you have questions about the faith? Have you ever wondered why we do something about the mass? Are you curious about Fr. Nguyen s favorite color? Ask the associate a question and perhaps your question will be featured in an upcoming bulletin article. You can sign your name or ask anonymously. Fr. Nguyen at frnguyen@sdtp.net or write your question down and drop it off in the narthex. ASK THE ASSOCIATE Fr. Nguyen Whatever happened to black vestments? What do other vestment colors signify? What is YOUR favorite color? Black vestments are in use today, albeit their use is much rarer. There are two masses where a priest is permitted to wear black, which would be at funerals and for the mass of All Souls. Their significance is much in line with the people present at the funeral mass who are in mourning. Pope Innocent III ( ) was the first to systematize the use of liturgical colors naming white, red, black, and green. The colors we have now were codified in 1570 following the Council of Trent. The colors violet and rose were added and the usage of gold and silver was permitted for special occasions. The use of green is most common and is used during ordinary time and it represents the hope of the church and its anticipation at the coming of the Lord. The use of white occurs during the Christmas and Easter seasons and is used to symbolize our joy and the glory of the Lord. It is also used on the feast days of our Lord, of Mary, and the angels and saints who are not martyrs. It is also used during baptisms and weddings. Violet is used as a penitential and sacrificial color. We wear violet during Advent and Lent. The priest will also wear a violet stole during the sacrament of Anointing and Confession. There is also the limited use of the color rose on the Third Sunday of Advent and fourth Sunday of Lent. This color represents our anticipation and rejoicing. They are a reminder of the upcoming joyful events that the Church will celebrate. Lastly, is my favorite color, red which represents fire, passion and blood. It symbolizes the Holy Spirit and the blood of our Lord and of the martyrs. We see this color on Palm Sunday, Good Friday, feast of martyrs, as well as on Pentecost. Thanks to Patty Taggart for the great question! Keep the questions coming to frnguyen@sdtp.net.
5 Adoration I want to encourage everyone to visit if possible, every day especially amid life s difficulties, the Blessed Sacrament of the infinite love of Christ and His mercy, preserved in our churches, and often abandoned, to speak filially with Him, to listen to Him in silence, and to peacefully entrust yourself to Him. Pope Francis, July 7, 2016 Celebrate Life Ministry All parishioners are kindly invited to join us as we pray for the unborn, the ones that cannot speak for themselves. We pray for them and their mothers, that the unborn will be spared and the mothers will have a change of heart. Our next Prayer Vigil is Saturday, September 15th, 8:00AM at Planned Parenthood, 1837 E Baseline Rd in Tempe. It is on the south side of Baseline Rd. East of McClintock Dr. behind La Fonda and Mandarin House restaurants. Please dress appropriate and bring bottled water.
