3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection Fourth Sunday in Lent - John 9: 1-41 When Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, He found him and said, Do you believe in the Son of Man? He answered and said, Who is He, sir, that I may believe in Him? Jesus said to him, You have seen Him, and the one speaking with you is He. He said, I do believe, Lord, and he worshiped Him. Today we hear the story of the man born blind. John did not give him a name. I believe if we look at the full story, the name of the man is not important at all. The apostles wanted to blame the blindness on some sin that had been committed. People who knew the man weren t sure that it really was the man who had been cured. It could have been someone who just looked like him. His parents wanted nothing to do with the situation. The Pharisees could not believe or accept that Jesus had performed the healing. But the man born blind knew what had happened, and in the end, he came to believe in Jesus, the Son of Man. It is amazing the conviction of the blind man as he was pulled and tugged between one scene and another. He grew a deeper understanding of what happened to him and in the person who gave him back his sight. It is even humorous as he talks to the Pharisees and how blind they were to what happened. Unfortunately, they would remain blind, not allowing their faith to grow. But their blindness was not physical. Their hearts were hardened and they could not see the power of God before them. So as Jesus said at the end of the gospel today, but now you are saying, We see, so your sin remains. It is sad what pride does to us. If left to our own, pride can destroy us. There are so many people we can identify with in the gospel this week. I know there are actually people who still believe that the illnesses and problems they have are punishment for some sin they have committed or the sins of their family. There are many around us who want concrete proof God is real. There are others who claim to have perfect eyesight but have no clue what it really means to be a follower of Jesus Christ. Some people are so set in their ways they cannot and will not be open to change. And some of us may be jealous of how, out of all the people, Jesus came to this unnamed man and brought his sight back to him. Jesus opened his eyes for him to see God. Don t we all want that? Don t we all want to have our whole being open to the goodness of the Lord? Do we not long for the same encounter with the Lord that the blind man experienced? Jesus may not come and put paste on our eyes and ask to wash, but he did come into the world for our salvation. Our encounter with Jesus today may not be as physical as the story in the gospel, but that does not make it any less special. If we have it in our minds that we know how Jesus will come to us in a dramatic way, we may miss his encounter in an ordinary part of our life. He may be seen in the simple gifts of bread and wine. When we see clearly, we can recognize that in those simple gifts, we encounter the Body and Blood of Jesus. When we humbly receive this gift, may we become what we receive and be Christ for others. Have great week!
