3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection Second Sunday of Easter John 20:19-31 Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe... [Jesus said] to Thomas, Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put your hand into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe. Thomas answered and said to him, My Lord and my God! Thomas refused to believe until he saw the risen Jesus with his own eyes. Jesus came right to where Thomas was and met his needs. He gave Thomas an opportunity to have his faith restored, but why did Thomas distrust his fellow disciples? He spent a number of years with them, and yet he needed more proof. When it comes to Jesus and his disciples, we see Jesus always trying to meet their needs. We find him taking them aside and further revealing the message he was trying to get across. Even after they left him when he was arrested, he did not abandon them. After all, they were all locked in the room for fear of what might happen to them because they were associated with Jesus. Perhaps they felt they were next to be arrested and killed. Jesus came to all of them and greeted them with: Peace be with you. It was time to strengthen their faith so that the disciples would be prepared to lead his Church. Most of us have a little bit of Thomas within us some more than others. We look around and see many who appear to have a deep faith, and here we are questioning certain things about what we believe. We may hear how much someone is in love with their God and we see how fortunate they are in their lives, yet we seem to be struggling. Perhaps someone tells you that God has spoken to them and given them insight about their lives, yet in all your prayers not once have you heard Jesus speaking to you directly. Then the doubts may continue to build, and we begin to make demands like Thomas. We want concrete proof about God in our lives; however, Jesus says something toward the end of the Gospel that may bring us peace: Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. Like he does for Thomas, Jesus meets us where we are and offers us his unconditional love. He wants to help us clear all the obstacles from our lives so that our relationship with him can remain strong. He wants to be a part of our lives and to remove all fears and doubts from us. He will never leave us. We may find ourselves having a dry time in our relationship with God, but that does not mean He has left us. It may mean we just have turned in the wrong direction. Listen to your heart, and you will find him in the stillness of your life. Find him in the Eucharist, in the faith community, in your family and friends. Christ is risen; let us rejoice! Have a great week! Don West Please note that this schedule is subject to change. Catholics Returning Home Wednesdays, Now-May 6, from 7-9 p.m. in Staff Conference Room (basement of Favret Hall) Do you know someone who has drifted away from his/her Catholic faith? We all know someone who is missing the fulfillment that comes from having faith in his/her life. We may want to reach out to those disconnected from the church, but we aren t sure how to offer support. How can we help them find their way home? As baptized, practicing Catholics, we have a precious gift of faith and love from the Lord that can be shared with our friends and loved ones. You can extend a personal invitation to them to come home to the Catholic Church. Many are just waiting for that invitation to return! Perhaps they think they ve been excommunicated and are not welcome in the Catholic Church. Are negative feelings toward the Church or its members keeping our brothers and sisters away? Some may carry with them a tremendous amount of guilt and misinformation about the Church. They can be afraid of approaching the Church for fear of being rejected. You can make a dramatic difference in someone s life by simply reaching out to him/her and saying, we miss you. Let them know that we want them to come home to our Church family. Our Catholics Returning Home program begins again in April. Attendees are not required to attend every session. For more information contact Deacon Jerry Barney at , ext. 121 or jbarney@stjohnwc.org. Evening of Reflection for ALL Married Couples Sunday, April 26, 5-7:30 p.m. Originally this retreat was only for newly married couples, but because some have asked us to open it up, it is now for ALL married couples. You are invited to attend a Married Couples Evening of Reflection, which will be held on Sunday, April 26, from 5-7:30 p.m. with dinner included in the Pavilion. Marriage is a wonderful journey and, like all journeys, there are different phases that we go through. Together we will explore the The Four Seasons of Marriage. By learning about these different seasons of marriage, you will be able to navigate the challenging times better and enjoy the beautiful and rewarding times to a much deeper level. It will be a wonderful opportunity to solidify the foundation of your marriage so that you can continue to grow as a couple. St. John will provide pizza for dinner. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Babysitting will be available. Let us know the number and ages of your children that will need this service. The Registration deadline is April 20. To register contact Jerry Barney at jbarney@stjohnwc.org, or , x121. Download our parish app today! Stay connected with St. John. 7 Be Christ To One Another! Our parish theme through June 2016 is Be Christ to One Another. Our parishioners have embodied this way of life long before this was our theme. Many of you regularly volunteer, whether it s in our parish or in your community. No matter how big or how small, it s important to live our lives as close to Christ as possible. Each week in the bulletin, we will feature opportunities to be Christ to one another, and we will also try to highlight those who are living this theme already. Prayer Team Fourth Sunday of Every Month Are there times in your life when you d like someone to pray with you? If so, beginning Sunday, April 26, after 11:30 Mass, members of St. John Prayer Team will be in the Chapel to pray with you and for you. Team members will be available on the fourth Sunday of every month from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. And, if you d like to join us as part of the Prayer Team, we d love to have you. Volunteers Needed During Mass! Liturgy of the Word with Children: Leaders needed at the 11:30 a.m. Mass! Liturgy of the Word with Children is a great way to get involved in the parish. The ministry provides a meaningful and fun experience for children in grades 1-3 during the Liturgy of the Word at the 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Sunday Masses. Many resources are available to help facilitators relate the Sunday readings in a way that is interesting, understandable, and that empowers them to reflect upon its message and connect it to their daily lives. It is not a religion class Liturgy of the Word with Children is intended to help the children pray and reflect on God s Word. We are currently looking for individuals and/or couples to be a part of this ministry and lead a session. You don t need to do it every weekend, or even every other weekend. Most leaders lead a session once a month or once every other month! If you are interested in becoming a leader, feel free to sit in on a session and see how it s done. Then call Scott Steinke for more info on how you can be a leader in this ministry! All Children in Grades 1, 2, and 3 are welcome to participate. Each session needs a facilitator and co-facilitator/aid. Materials and training are provided. This may be the ministry at St. John for you! Fair Trade Coffee Sales on April 18/19 Fair Trade Coffee, Tea, and Chocolate Sales will be held after all Masses in the Gathering Space the weekend of April 18/19. Purchasing Fair Trade coffee, tea, and chocolate assures fair wages for third world farmers providing these products. Thank you for choosing Fair Trade. 7 Thank You Note Since 2011, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at St. John has been joining the hands of those in need to those able to help. Our Vincentians gave more than 8,000 hours to reach out a loving hand to our parishioners and neighbors in need. The outstretched hand may hold groceries, clothing for a child, assistance with a bill, or the hand of another in prayer. All this is made possible because of your generous donations. Thank you for your contributions during our special Lenten collection. Your next opportunity to help us extend a helping hand will be the second collection the weekend of April 18/19. For additional information about our organization, contact Mary Bonser at mcbonser@outlook.com. Share-A-Lunch Sunday, April 26, 9 a.m. Thank you to all contributors and volunteers of SAL in March.
