3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION Luke 12:13-21 I shall say to myself, Now as for you, you have so many good things stored up for many years, rest, eat, drink, be merry! But God said to him, You fool, this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong? Thus will it be for all who store up treasures for themselves but are not rich in what matters to God. We live in a world that seems to think very much like the man in this story. There is an attitude in the world today that says that whoever has the most stuff wins. But what is it they have won? How does collecting a treasure here on earth help anyone get into heaven? Jesus last statement in the gospel clearly tells the audience that they need to be rich in what matters to God. Does that mean God doesn t want us to have nice things? Are we not allowed to do what we want with what we have earned? Again, Jesus words give us another clue: Take care to guard against all greed, for though one may be rich, one s life does not consist of possessions. Somewhere in the collection of our wealth, we have to discover its true value. Does it bring happiness to us? Was the cost worth it in the long run? Do we ever thank the Lord for giving us the talents to be able to achieve what we have earned? God is the source of life and we cannot take that for granted. What good are the treasures we collect here on earth if they do not bring us closer to salvation? Isn t being welcomed into the Father s house, in heaven, the true happiness we seek? If we focus on material wealth, never looking to see others in the world, we can t be seen as good disciples of Jesus. We will never do well if we do not find the riches that matter to God. For a while, you and others around you may find some enjoyment, and even some temporary happiness, but it can never last. Remember the younger son in the Prodigal Son story; he had many friends while the money was good, but when it ran out, he was left with nothing. Only when he remembered the source of life that he had at home did he wake up to what was truly valuable. No one is saying that we shouldn t save for the future. It would be foolish not to be prepared. But at the same time, we are told when our life comes to an end that we will be asked how we have lived the two great commandments. How good of a steward have we been? Have we recognized Christ in others? Have we been self-serving, or have we served the needs of the kingdom? To be rich in the eyes of the Father might be to deny our very self, take up our cross and follow his Son. We are challenged to be other-centered and not self-centered. That doesn t mean we can t love and enjoy our life to the fullest. All we have to ask is: what is the true cost? God has called each of us by name; how are we going to respond? Have a great week! Updated/Renewed Parish Media Carts Once again, our two Parish Media Carts will be on display in our Gathering Space every weekend, and they have been updated! The VHS tapes have been replaced with 50+ new DVDs, bringing the total collection of DVDs to 100. We also have a nice assortment of movies that are kid/family friendly. As Fr. Don likes to joke, We are a full-service parish. The media items can be used free of charge! However, over the years we have had a significant number of videos not returned. Please only borrow them one at a time, and only for one week. Please return them to the office or drop box in the Gathering Space.

Volunteers Needed My first year in youth ministry at St. John the Evangelist has been a blessing, and I am enthusiastic for this coming year! We are making some adjustments and I am looking for some more young adult and adult volunteers. By being a youth ministry volunteer, not only can you join in meaningful service projects, eat delicious food, and play fun games, but you also get the opportunity to make a difference in the life of our teens. St. John the Evangelist has created this new theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. As we read in Isaiah, But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, Jacob, and formed you, Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine. [Is 43: 1] How have you been called? I have been called... To give: To serve: Reach Out Lakota On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of nonperishable food, or a toiletry, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. These donations are given to Reach Out Lakota. Thank you for your support of this community organization. St. Gabriel Consolidated School Earns Cash for your Trash! Thanks to those of you who saved your BoxTops, labels, and printer cartridges for our school! We d like to ask all parishioners to check the things you would normally throw away they can be very valuable to St. Gabe! General Mills will donate $.10 for each BoxTop for Education symbol from one of their packages. Labels from Tyson products and from Campbell s (and Prego, Pepperidge Farms, and other subsidiaries of Campbell s) earn playground equipment and other accessories that help stretch school funds. Used printer cartridges that are sold to recycling companies earn $1-$12. Please save your used printer cartridges and the Labels for Education and BoxTops for Education printed on packages from General Mills, Tyson, and Campbell s and put them in the collection box located in the Gathering Space! The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you The St. John s Stephen Ministry has trained Christian care-giving men and women who can listen with a warm heart and show God s love to those in our parish, and in our community, who are hurting. This ministry is here for you to be there for someone in need. Often times, hardships are more than what we can handle on our own. Through the help of a Stephen Minister, he or she brings the presence of a caring Christian friend to walk through and journey with us in those tough times.
