3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION LK 13:22-30 Lord, open the door for us. He will say to you in reply, I do not know where you are from. And you will say, We ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets. Then he will say to you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evildoers. What a tremendous loss it would be to come knocking at God s door and have the Master say to us, I do not know where you are from. Talk about feeling left out. Jesus goes so far as to say that the ones who were knocking were evildoers. Why would he say these things to us? As the story goes, they had eaten and drank with Jesus (the Eucharist) and Jesus taught in their streets (the scripture). We might think that these things must have counted for something. There is at least an appearance of effort on our part. Someone asked Jesus if only a few would be saved. Jesus did not tell the person yes or no, but he made it clear that the path wasn t an easy one to take. It takes a lot of grace from God and a strong faith to accept the challenges along the way. Just because we say we are a Christian doesn t mean that we have a lock on eternal salvation. God wants an active response to his unconditional love. It is not enough to say that we know Jesus; Jesus has to be a part of the fabric of who we are. Our faith involves an active response where we participate in the Good News. We can t come knocking at the door of the Master with pictures of us attending Mass or receiving the sacraments and think that is proof enough of us embracing the Gospel message. In this Gospel, Jesus speaks of people entering the kingdom who we might think should not be included. If we feel that way, then arrogance has taken over our hearts. Who are we to judge those who God welcomes? If we start trying to prove why we belong, we probably don t belong. Heaven is not something we earn; we do not deserve it. It is a pure gift. However, if we are not grateful of that gift, or if we start getting jealous about who else got the gift, it s no wonder the Master doesn t know us when we knock on his door. We spend way too much time judging others. Many of us think we are better than others. Some don t follow the rules and want to make choices for others; their choices are not the choices they should make. People say that others are the wrong color or their that their religion is dangerous; they are not good people. Again, why in the world would the Master answer the door, knowing the baggage we are bringing with us? It is kindness and mercy that the Lord wants to see in each of us. There is absolutely no room for hate, violence or prejudice in the vocabulary of a disciple of Jesus. Each of us are called by name to find the narrow gate. The best way to do so is by finding more ways to be Christ to one another. Have a great week! Readings for This Week: August Monday Thes 1: 1-5, 11-12; Ps 96; Mt 23: Tuesday Thes 2: 1-3a, 14-17; Ps 96; Mt 23: Wednesday Rv 21: 9b-14; Ps 145; Jn 1: Thursday Cor 1: 1-9; Ps 145; mt 214: Friday Cor 1: 17-25; Ps 33; Mt 25: 1-13 Daily readings can be accessed online from our parish Web site, You can also access them from our parish app! SAL will meet next at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28 in the Pavilion. We will be preparing about 300 peanut butter sandwiches and packing lunches. (Lunches are distributed at Reach Out Lakota and St. Francis- Cincinnati.) In addition to the peanut butter, bread, fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or cups), snacks, and juice boxes needed for the lunches, we welcome other non-perishable donations. The pantries are in particular need of cereal, flour, sugar, cooking oil, canned meat & fruit, and personal care items. We welcome brown grocery bags for packaging food, too. Donations can be dropped off during our meeting time or in advance at the Parish Office. Thanks again for your support! Please contact Diane Claytor at with questions. Scripture Study September 1, 9:30-11:30 a.m. Many Catholics are unfamiliar with the Bible. The bible is not just important, it is essential to our faith. Sacred Scripture is an indispensable part of our relationship with God. Join us as we focus on the story that ties all of Scripture together, the story of God s unfailing love for humanity. The Great Adventure Bible Study, The Bible Timeline will begin on Thursday, September 1. We will meet in the Hospitality Room of the church from 9:30-11:30 a.m. If you are interested in attending, call Jeanne Gavigan at for more information. Companions on the Journey Thursday, August 25, 7-8:30 p.m. The Companions on a Journey grief support group meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. Here you can express your grief and learn how to go through the grief process so that you can begin this new chapter of your life in a healthy way. Please contact Ron Meyer or Karen Marvich if you have any questions. Volunteers needed for Family Promise To meet the growing need of giving shelter to the homeless, our parish would like to participate in the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Shelter for Homeless people in West Chester. There are 14 churches in our area that take turns on a rotating basis, hosting families that are in need of a place to stay. The goal is to provide temporary shelter, affording the families the time they need to rebound and ultimately stand on their own again. Although St. John Church will not be hosting, we do hope to assist this ministry with volunteers. Volunteers are needed to cook, serve meals, play with children, help with homework, and some may even stay overnight. They interact with guests treating them with respect and responding with compassion. We are also looking for someone to serve as Coordinator to schedule the people needed for the ministry. If you would like to help in any of the ways listed, a 90 minute training seminar is first required. If you have questions, or would like to help contact Deacon Jerry Barney at jbarney@stjohnwc.org, or , x121. Card Ministry Members of St. John are starting a ministry for those in need of sympathy, congratulations, or any kind words of encouragement. We are always here for you! If you would like to be a part of this caring ministry, know someone who deserves a card, or you just want to learn more, please contact Angela Pugliano at apugliano@stjohnwc.org. The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you The St. John s Stephen Ministry has trained Christian care-giving men and women who can listen with a warm heart and show God s love to those in our parish, and in our community, who are hurting. This ministry is here for you to be there for someone in need. Often times, hardships are more than what we can handle on our own. Through the help of a Stephen Minister, he or she brings the presence of a caring Christian friend to walk through and journey with us in those tough times. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the hurting, and the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to a Stephen Minister? Or is He calling you to reach out for someone you know? Now is the time to get the help you need to find healing and peace. Call Scott Steinke at the Parish Office at (513) ext. 115 to find out more about how a Stephen Minister can be there for you.

7 Setting the Table of the Lord If you have ever set your table at home for a big family meal, then you already have an idea of what our Liturgical Ministers do every weekend for Mass. The Altar Attendants, Sacristans, Hospitality Minister Captains, Hospitality Ministers, Eucharistic Minister Captains, Eucharistic Ministers, and Lectors all play a big role in The Meal we share together. Many of our parishioners give their time and talents each and every weekend, and we are absolutely grateful for the wonderful gift they give. But, we fall very short on help for each Mass. We are definitely in need of Altar Attendants, Sacristans, Hospitality Ministers, and Eucharistic Ministers every weekend. We encourage you and your family to prayerfully consider being part of the Liturgical Ministry. Training is simple and takes little of your time. We would appreciate your consideration of participating in this ministry and would certainly love to have you! If you are interested, please contact Scott Steinke at , or him at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org. Thank you very much! Volunteers Needed for Community Dinner Tuesday, September 6. Members of St. John are invited to assist with the Community Dinner that is served weekly at Faith United Methodist Church on Cox Road. The Stepping Forward program provides a dinner, along with job and life skills classes, homework help for children, and referrals to needed resources. They also have a Choice Food Pantry open for families within the Lakota School System. We are partnering with Faith United Methodist Church to provide help in the cooking, serving and clean up of the dinner on Tuesday, September 6. There are different jobs and times available: Prep and/or Cook - 4:30-6:00 Serve and Clean Up - 6:00-7:30 Please contact Cheryl Campbell at h.c.campbell76@ gmail.com or call to volunteer. Please note which job and time works best for you. Thanks so much for your help. Hospitality Ministers: Giving a Warm Welcome Each Week Our Hospitality Ministers at St. John s give a warm welcome to those coming to the Table of the Lord. They make themselves present in the Gathering Space, give all a Good Morning! or Good Afternoon! that come through the doors, and hand them a Worship Aid for mass. It is a rather simple task, but makes a great difference for all who attend our parish to see St. John Church as a warm and welcoming community of faith-filled Christians. The hospitality ministers have many duties, but their main task is to be the first face that people see when they walk into church. We need your help! If you are someone who can shake a hand, give a Good Morning! or Good Evening!, and hand out a Worship Aid with a warm smile, then volunteering as a Hospitality Minister is for you! This is also a great opportunity for all members of the family to volunteer together and get the kids involved in a wonderful way. If you would like more information about how you can be a Hospitality Minister, please call Scott Steinke at ext. 115 or at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org. It would be great to see plenty of faces welcoming everyone as we worship together! 7 Getting Married? Marriage preparation is an important process and should be started as soon as possible upon engagement. Even if you elect to be married elsewhere, we are happy to provide the marriage preparation needed. If you have a prior marriage and are in need of annulment, please feel free to call. For more information, contact Fr. Don West at or dwest@stjohnwc.org, Deacon Jerry Barney at , ext. 121, or jbarney@stjohnwc.org, or Deacon Fred Merritt at fmerritt@stjohnwc.org. Reach Out Lakota On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of non-perishable food, or a toiletry, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. These donations are given to Reach Out Lakota. Thank you for your support of this community organization. 8 I Have Called You By Name... Our New Parish Theme! St. John the Evangelist has created this new theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. For the next few months, we will be highlighting groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Knights of Columbus We say Thank you! to our Knights of Columbus! The Knights have been so helpful every year at the festival, manning the Poker tables and making sure everyone can participate and have a great time. Since another successful festival has come and gone, we want to give the Knights a special thank you for all that they do throughout the year. The Knights participate in several charitable programs like Chip in for Charity, and they also are in charge of one of our most important Parish events, the annual Lenten Fish Fry! Their help is invaluable when it comes to moving furniture, setting up for events, and raising funds for St. John. If you are interested in becoming a part of this important ministry, please contact Pete Seibenick ( ), their Recruiting Coordinator. Bereavement Ministry If you ve ever lost a loved one, you know that those involved with Bereavement Ministry take their time and talents to make you feel appreciated, prayed for, and loved. Losing someone is a difficult thing to go through, but it s even more difficult when you feel alone; they are here to make sure you don t have to feel that way. The Bereavement Ministry meets with the family to plan the funeral Mass and makes all necessary arrangements, they take care of and coordinate all luncheons that are requested by the families of our parish, and they prepare our gathering space for visitations if requested by the families and/or the funeral home. If you are interested in knowing more about this ministry, or would like to know how you can become a volunteer and serve in some way, please contact Scott Steinke at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org or (513) ext Meal Ministry Our Meal Ministers are people who make meals for members of our parish and community who are going through a tough time and could use a few homemade meals. We thank them so much for how they fulfil their call from God. There is a simple online sign-up tool that our Meal Ministers utilize to choose when and for whom they cook. The online site also explains any special food needs and gives delivery instructions. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Joan at ext. 124 or jseibenick@ stjohnwc.org. More importantly, if you know of a local friend or family member who could use the assistance of our ministry, please send Joan a note or give her a call. Many of us know someone who may be experiencing a hardship; A warm meal delivered to the door is a personal and meaningful way to reach out to someone in need, and we thank them for this service.
