3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 9:30-37 Then [Jesus] sat down, called the Twelve, and said to them, If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last and the servant of all. Taking a child, he placed it in their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me. The Twelve had been arguing about who was the greatest among them. It is interesting they chose to discuss this, because as we heard right before their conversation, Jesus told them he was going to be killed and in three days rise again. Fear stopped them from asking questions. They ignored what Jesus said and began to look selfishly at their own lives. Jesus took this teachable moment and let them know about being the greatest in the eyes of God. Looking at his friends, he told them the first must be the servant of all. The first, in reality, will be the last because his or her needs come after others. Jesus placed a child in their midst, and referenced the child with the word it. Jesus places it in their midst and he puts his arms around it. In terms of status in their culture, children were nothing. So to receive an it a child in Jesus name was the only way to be a part of Jesus life. As the story ends, Jesus confirmed that when they receive a child, they are actually receiving God the Father the one who sent Jesus into the world. Jesus was able to say all of this to the Twelve because he had already been modeling that type of leadership. The Son of God was clearly a servant coming to meet the needs of those who encountered him while he was on earth. He gave his life so that others may receive salvation. Jesus did not come into the world to be crowned a king. While Jesus did receive a crown, a crown made of thorns, his kingdom is not of this world. Earthly achievements were not part of his mission. If we want to be a part of the kingdom, we must find ways to be a servant to others. Who might be the children in our world without status? Who are those ignored? Who are those who are on the fringe of society? Jesus is placing them in the midst of us all and putting his arms around them. If we wish to be a part of the master plan, we have to recognize the ones who have the Lord s attention. Perhaps it could be a neighbor who is down and out on their luck. It could be someone who is struggling in a new environment at work or school. Maybe it is time to use your resources to help those immigrants struggling to make a go of it in a new country. Is it time to keep pressure on our political leaders to make decisions to help those struggling in our country? Jesus told the Twelve that to be the greatest they must be the servant of all. How well are we doing with the challenge Jesus gave us so long ago? Have a great week! Abortion & Reconciliation Much of the news coverage about Pope Francis extending to all priests the faculty to absolve the sin of abortion and remove the automatic excommunication that can incur has been misleading and confusing. The Archdiocese of Cincinnati wants to make it clear that our priests have already had this faculty for many years. No one who has received absolution for this sin from a priest of the Archdiocese, acting as the instrument of God s mercy, should doubt the validity of the sacrament. No priest can engage in sacramental ministry without being granted faculties to do so by the local bishop. What is included in those faculties is detailed in writing. Priests of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, as permitted by canon law, have long been granted by the Archbishop the faculty to absolve the sin (of abortion) and to remit the (automatic) penalty of excommunication. As St. John Paul II assured post-abortive women in his encyclical, The Gospel of Life, The Father of mercies is ready to give you his forgiveness and his peace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. The Catholic Church also offers compassionate post-abortion healing through Project Rachel ( A Prayer for the Papal Visit Please pray the following during Pope Francis s apostolic visit to the United States. It would be particularly appropriate to say this prayer as the Holy Father addresses the U.S. Congress on Thursday, September 24, if you are unable to watch it live. God of all peoples, We give you thanks for your Son, Jesus Christ, whose final prayer for his disciples was, that they may be one as we are one. We praise you for the gift of Pope Francis, our Holy Father, who has been given the historic opportunity to proclaim Your love and truth to the heart of our democracy. We ask that his witness stir in our elected leaders and citizens across our country a renewal of unity in serving the common good of the entire human family. Let this day bring new possibilities For the protection of our religious freedom; For the respect of all life from conception until natural death; For the strengthening of our families, the foundation upon which our whole nation rests; For feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, and welcoming the migrant; For forging racial harmony and seeking peace and solidarity in our communities and throughout the world; For protecting the gift of creation, our common home. May we always proclaim our faith in the public square and be a sign of Your love to all the world. We ask for all these things through Jesus Christ our Lord, Light to all nations. Amen. -Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr, Archbishop of Cincinnati Children s Mass Books Has your child been attending Liturgy of the Word with Children or Sunday school and now he/she is having trouble transitioning to sitting and participating in Mass? The film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in 1865, thousands of African Americans were pulled back into mandatory labor with shocking force and brutality. After viewing the 90-minute film, a half-hour discussion will follow. Later, on October 17 from 2 4 p.m., we will meet at Our Lady of the Holy Spirit Center (5440 Moeller Ave., Norwood, Ohio, 45212), with members of Church of the Resurrection Catholic Church of Bond Hill to discuss the message of the video and its relevance for today s society. "Go give to the needy sweet charity's bread. For giving is living," the angel said. "And must I be giving again and again?" My peevish, petulant answer ran. "Oh, no," said the angel, piercing me through, "just give till the Master stops giving to you." The St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to invite you to give the gift of your time to this worthwhile organization. We are always in need of new members to join our home visit teams who bring hope and support to our neighbors in need. Next weekend, September 26 and 27, we will celebrate the Feast of St. Vincent de Paul. Please join us in the Gathering Space after Mass where we will be happy to answer questions and provide additional information. This is a wonderful way to actually put our parish theme, Be Christ to One Another, into action. We are always grateful for your continued support through your generous donations and prayers. Contact info: Steve Gross at sgross@stephengross. com and Mary Bonser at mcbonser@outlook.com.
