2 Come Out! MUSINGS FROM THE DEACON CAVE Death is an emotional event. The passing of someone we know rarely goes without feelings of loss knowing that we will not see that person again. In today s gospel, we hear of Jesus weeping and being perturbed at the tomb of Lazarus. This gospel shows the humanity of Jesus because he is vulnerable to the same emotional reactions that we all have encountered. But the message is not about death, but about life life in the Spirit. When Jesus calls out to Lazarus, Come Out! He is not only speaking to Lazarus, but to all of us. He is calling us to come out of our isolation, he is calling us to come out of our loneliness, he is calling us to come out of our sinfulness and live a new life in the Spirit! Lent is a season of reflection and penance. It is easy to get so focused on our shortcomings that we forget that the reason we take time to examine ourselves is so we are ready to burst forth with new life at Easter! As Paul reminds us in his letter to the Romans, if we live simply satisfying our earthly desires, we miss that we called to live life with the Spirit of God. Let s take these last several days of Lent to take Jesus message to heart and be ready to Come Out! 4 OUTREACH Service Sunday Feeding America-Saturday, April 27 Sponsored by St. Bernard Parish Social Justice Committee We will be working at Feeding America, 9:00 am-noon, followed by a pizza lunch at our Parish Hall. This is a family friendly event, children 10 yrs. and older can participate. Child care is provided at our Church for children under 10 yrs. Limited to 30 volunteers. Sign-up sheets are located in our Narthex. Save The Date The St Bernard Mission Quilters will be making quilts to donate to the Community Clothes Closet, Wednesday, May 8, 9:00 am in the Activity Center. We invite everyone interested in sewing or crafts to join us in cutting, piecing, and tying. This event is being facilitated by the Thrivent Action Team Program. Prayer For An End To Infanticide The U.S. Senate recently failed to pass the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act legislation that prohibits infanticide by ensuring that a child born alive following an attempted abortion would receive the same degree of care to preserve her or his life and health as would be given to any other child born alive at the same gestational age. Please join us in prayer for an end to infanticide: Jesus, Lord of Life, transform the hearts of our elected leaders to recognize that infanticide is wrong and must not be tolerated. Enter an intimate journey of faith through a deep reflection that will unite one s pain and suffering with Jesus on the cross through the sorrowful heart of His Mother. Wednesdays, 12:15 pm-12:45 pm in our Church April 10, 17 This year our Paschal Candle will feature The Good Shepherd. A new Paschal candle is purchased every year for the Easter Vigil. After the new fire is lit during the Easter Vigil the priest prepares the cross on the candle with five grains of incense that are encased in wax nails to represent the five wounds of Christ: the three nails that pierced his hands and feet, the spear thrust into his side, and the thorns that crowned his head. The Paschal Candle is the first candle lit with the flame of the Easter fire, representing the light of Christ coming into the world. It is then lit during all the Masses of the Easter season and then throughout the year at baptisms and funerals. We are continuing our tradition of giving someone the opportunity to purchase the Paschal Candle in memory of a loved one.
