3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 12:38-44 Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood. Jesus begins today s Gospel by pointing out that scribes are not who they claim to be. Jesus exposes their flaws and challenges their hypocrisy. However, Jesus hits deeper than just the warning about the scribes he challenges those listening to examine in their hearts what they are truly giving to the Lord. As Jesus sits opposite the treasury, he observes each person s giving. There are indeed people who appear to be generous, but Jesus is going to teach his disciples what genuine giving is all about. A widow comes to put in her gift. Given what others have contributed, her two small coins seem worthless in the larger scheme of things. Jesus tells his disciples the widow has given from her poverty; she gave her whole livelihood. The rest of the people gave from their surplus. While it is a gift, it is not a sacrifice because the funds might not be missed. After reflecting on this Gospel, it is humbling to hear this message this week. How often does God get my first fruits as a sign of gratitude for the many gifts he has given to me? How often am I just giving from my surplus without giving a second thought to what I am doing? Just how grateful am I that God has blessed me with so many gifts? What about you? What kind of steward are you with the gifts placed in your hands? I bet there are few of us who fit into the widow s category when it comes to showing gratitude to the Lord. We may look down on the characters in the Gospel, such as the scribes, but are we much different from them? If the answer comes quickly to you, perhaps you may want to reflect on this with prayer. Not everything is measured by money, but it is a reality and necessary part of our church family. Are we being the best stewards we can be? Have we shown our gratitude to the Lord by being generous with our treasures? For myself I try to evaluate that every year. I have felt called to increase my giving of my treasures each year in gratitude for placing me in a community that shows the spirit of Christ alive. It is up to everyone to make their own choices about using the gifts that God has placed into your hands. I believe there is so much more we can do as a faith community. We must have gratitude for what the Lord God has done for us. Embrace the widow s might and give our first fruits. Have a great week!
