3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 16:13-20 Who do people say that the Son of Man is? They replied, Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter said in reply, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Peter gave the perfect answer to Jesus question. Jesus sensed the hand of God in Peter s answer. No mere human could have come up with the answer; there is hope for Peter after all. For now, all looks good, but the feeling wouldn t last for long. It is interesting to see what others had to say about Jesus and how they saw him, but his disciples did not really believe any of the answers they gave to him. The question is: How long will it take them to truly believe the response that Peter gave Jesus? They have a long way to go before fully accepting the fact that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of the living God. They had much to learn and much to experience before that was their true view of Jesus. So there is Jesus, standing before you, asking the question: Who do you say I am? We may come up with the same answer that Peter did, or with words that mean just about the same. But what does that answer mean to you and me? What does it mean to acknowledge Jesus as the anointed one, the Son of the living God? Are we prepared to fully understand what that means in our personal lives? Knowing the right answer doesn t mean we know the importance of the answer. Anyone can memorize an answer. I grew up learning my religion that way. Questions and answers were put into a book and everything was pretty much black and white. There wasn t a whole lot of thinking done in the old Baltimore Catechism ; it was very cut and dry. To answer the question that Jesus offers us today is not a simple, memorized answer. It calls us to go deeper into our understanding of the anointed one of God. What does it mean to recognize Jesus as Son of the living God? Soon, we will learn that it means the anointed one must suffer and die. It means the Son of God will be beaten and crucified as a common criminal for our sake and the sake of the world. It will mean that three days later, he will rise and then ascend back to the Father. Knowing that Jesus is the anointed one of God, his only Son, means we have come to recognize our salvation. Once we have recognized this, our lives will forever be changed. We will look at our lives differently. We should realize that we have a journey to make. So, who do you say Jesus is in your own life? Does he make a difference? Is he the Son of God that will lead you into the kingdom of heaven? Will you open your heart and let him touch you and open your eyes to the good news? The living God has offered up his only Son for our salvation. That should make a difference in our lives. If it does not, then we have failed to understand who Jesus is and what he has to offer. Don t let him walk out of your life. Recognize him as he stands before you. See him in the Eucharist. Recognize him in the people you meet. See him in your very life! Have a great week! 8 I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you Does life sometimes just seem overwhelming? Sometimes things come along in our lives that can overwhelm us and suddenly begin weighing us down. We can find ourselves struggling day after day with simple activities and just not feeling like ourselves. Stephen Ministers help those who are going through tough times. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time or has a friend or loved one overwhelmed with something in their life, perhaps there is a need to talk to someone you can trust, who will really listen, and who will respect your deepest feelings Someone like a Stephen Minister. Contact Scott Steinke ( ext. 115) to find out more information about the Stephen Ministry at St. John Church. You do not need to face anything alone! Youth and Adults - How Can YOU Make a Difference? If you are in 5th grade and up, you can make a difference in our parish! We are always looking for altar attendants at our weekend Masses, and now is a PERFECT time to start!! We love to see our youth and our parishioners involved in the Mass and this is certainly a wonderful way to participate. If you are interested in becoming an altar attendant for our weekend Masses, or have any inquiries about our other liturgical ministry positions, please contact Scott Steinke at , or ssteinke@ stjohnwc.org. Download our parish app today! Stay connected with St. John. Set up prayer reminders. Listen to homilies. Scan the code or search your app store for myparish. 8 Thank You, Campton Mission! Thank You note from Sr. Susan Marie Pleiss, OFM (Campton Mission): The Good Shepherd Food Pantry in Campton KY was VERY blessed to have the recent tremendous infusion of food from St. John's Knights of Columbus Council to get us through the long summer, when in-kind food donations slow down considerably. Just yesterday I spent a couple of hours in the pantry organizing everything and so I physically "connected" with most of those donated items!! Rest assured that we now have a solid supply of peanut butter, saltine crackers, soup, canned vegetables, and LOTS of macaroni and cheese. Many hands came together to assemble this critical donation and we are especially grateful for all the behind the scenes work of Joe and Mary Jo Cini and many of the Knights of Columbus at St. John's. We are honored to have you as one of our most loyal and generous partners in ministry to the needy in Wolfe County, Kentucky. Blessings of abundance be yours as we transition into the Fall season. Companions on the Journey Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Hospitality Room Companions on the Journey is a place where you can express your grief and learn how to go through the grief process so that you can begin this new chapter of your life in a healthy way.
