3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 13:1-23 But blessed are your eyes, because you see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. When I used to live in Bethel, where everyone seemed to have a green thumb, I decided I was going to grow tomatoes. I went to the feed store to pick up some plants, an old half of a whisky barrel (I was too darn lazy to dig up a garden), and some good potting soil. Everything was set in order to be a success; I was certain. The plants grew and they were staked, ready for tomatoes. By season s end, the net total was three tomatoes, all much smaller than the smallest cherry tomato you ve ever seen. Obviously, I did not have the skill or the talent that the farmer had in today s story. When Jesus spoke to the apostles, he told them how lucky they were to see and hear all that Jesus had to offer. Many that had gone before them would have longed to experience this. They had the Master bring them everything and then he took the time to explain the message. Perhaps we might find ourselves being a little jealous, too. After all, they had Jesus sitting with them and teaching them all about the Good News. Today, we have the Gospel, the letters and the scholar who have kept the fire alive so that it may be placed in our hearts as well. We have no excuse when it comes to the soil story. What kind of soil are you? Have you heard the word spoken to you? Is your heart open to hear what Jesus has to say? Can you see the work that the Lord has done in your life? How is the seed that Jesus has placed in your care grown? Are you a good steward,with the gifts and talents that have been given to you? Have you taken the proper attitude to nature that which has been placed in your care? We cannot deny that so much has been given to each of us. We all have something to offer to the community. The sower has been very generous with the seeds he has thrown out into the world. By our Baptism, we have been enriched with the Good News and by grace, we continue to have our faith nourished. And if we continue to follow the directions of Jesus, the yield we will have is beyond comprehension. Jesus tells us that those whose seed falls on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. If your yield is not there yet, perhaps it is time to go back and listen to the one who saves. Jesus is always there to restore our hearing and give us back our sight. Don t let the trapping of the world choke off the Good News. God is calling you by name; you are his very own. Listen with your heart! Have a great week. The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) registration is open and St. John youth ministry will be bringing a group to attend this amazing conference. NCYC takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana from November The conference contains engaging speakers, live music, games, and 25,000 other Catholic teens! Registration is open now through Sept. 15. Campton Mission Trip St. John Youth Ministry would like to thank all our wonderful high school and adult volunteers for the Campton Mission Trip. This year s mission trip was wonderful and we had such a great time running the Hope Mountain Camp. Don t forget to check Facebook for more photos! Junior High Summer Camp July 16 St. John Youth Ministry would like to thank all our wonderful volunteers, snack donators, and drivers for the St. John Jr. High Summer Camp. This year s camp was a blast as we learned about Catholic Social Teaching and enjoyed our trips to Rockquest, The Web, and King s Island. Without your help, this camp would not have happened! 7 Festival Electrical Set-up Saturday, July 22 at 7 a.m. Lights setup on Wednesday, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. The setup of the electrical wiring for the festival will be Saturday, July 22 starting at 7:30 a.m. and will go into the early afternoon. No special skills are required, but please bring ladders if you are able. Tools that may be useful but are not required are: gloves, wire cutters, and screwdrivers. Lunch will be provided. Many hands make light work! We will also have our lighting set up on August 2 at 6:30 p.m. We will be starting at 6:30 p.m. and working until the lights are all hung or it is too dark to work anymore. Attention Nurses, LPNs, EMTs and Other medical Professionals Did you know that we have a first aid booth at our Family Festival? Please consider signing up to work a shift (or two). Horse Races is spin the wheel game to see if your horse wins the race. We also have the traditional game of Skeeball. Potty Pitch is a game where kids throw a wiffle ball into the potty to win silly prizes. Don t worry, it s good clean fun! We also have a game called Win a Prize. It s similar to our Bars and Bells game, where you have a pull tab ticket to see if you win big. Check out all of our games this year. Or, even better, work a shift in one of these booths! Divorced & Separated Monday, July 17 at 7:30 p.m. The Divorced and Separated group meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month. We will meet on July 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room off the Gathering Space inside the church. You don t have to walk this journey alone. New Server Robes We will be purchasing new robes for our altar attendants this summer. We will be asking parishioners to help us with the purchase of 28 new albs. For $100 you can purchase one of the new robes and it will be embroidered on the inside with an in honor of or in memory of. Thank you. 7 Annual Women s Day of Reflection Save the date Saturday October 7, The Ladies of Sacred Heart Fairfield and St. Ann Hamilton would like to invite you to our Annual Women's Day of Reflection. We will be focusing on the 100th Anniversary of Fatima and the promises made by our Blessed Mother Mary. Our Speakers will be Marie Wilson, Jeanne Hunt and Sr. Agnes Immaculae, Children of Mary, Blessed Sacrament. Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Share a Lunch Thank you to all contributors of SAL in June! SAL will next meet at 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 23rd in the Pavilion. Please come join us! We will be preparing about 300 peanut butter sandwiches and packing lunches. (Lunches are distributed at Reach Out Lakota and St. Francis- Cincinnati.) In addition to the peanut butter, bread, fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or cups), snacks, and juice boxes needed for the lunches, we welcome other non-perishable donations, too. The pantries are in particular need of cereal, flour, sugar, cooking oil, canned meat & fruit, and personal care items. (Please note that we do not have access to a refrigerator so please refrain from donating natural peanut butter or highly perishable fruit.) The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you The St. John Stephen Ministry has trained Christian caregiving men and women who can listen with a warm heart and show God s love to those in our parish, and in our community, who are hurting. Through the help of a Stephen Minister, he or she brings the presence of a caring Christian friend to walk through and journey with us in those tough times. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the hurting, and the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to a Stephen Minister? Or is He calling you to reach out for someone you know? Now is the time to get the help you need to find healing and peace. Serving with God at Mass Are you interested in becoming a Liturgical Minister at Mass? These are the ministries of Altar Attendant, Hospitality Minister, Extraordinary Minister, Sacristan, and Lector. This summer is the PERFECT time to start having you, and your entire family, get involved a little more at Mass. All of our current ministers will attest to the fact that it is a wonderful way to participate more fully in the Mass each weekend, and a great way to feel more connected to the parish. Now is the time to get in touch with me and find out more about how you can become part of this ministry! Training for any ministry will be at your convenience and takes just an hour of your time.
