3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 22:34-40 He said to him, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments. It all sounds so simple when you hear the message. All we have to do is follow two commandments and everything else will flow from them. How well do you think we are doing? What grade would you give yourself? Given what Jesus revealed about who our neighbors are, I m not sure I would get all that good of grade. Looking around the world, I d say the whole neighbor idea isn t doing well at all. The two commandments are interlocked. You can t say you give your whole being to God while treating your neighbor with disrespect. How can you say you love a God that you can t see and hate a neighbor that you do see? Loving God with our whole being calls us to love our neighbor. Inside of us is the essence of God; we are created in his image and likeness. We have been infused with his unconditional love. We have received all his compassion and mercy. And since that is true, we have everything we need to love our neighbor as ourselves. However, we are selfish people. Sometimes we can have a little too much pride. Sometimes we think we are better than another person. We can be so petty when it comes to relationships. We are quick to anger and slow to compassion. While Jesus may have given an answer that shut the Pharisees up, it opened a whole can of worms for anyone who wanted to take his message to heart. The heart is where the change must happen. We need a change of heart. We must begin to look at others as Christ would look upon them. Jesus life on earth showed us how to live the two great commandments. He took that love for his neighbor all the way to the cross. He died for everyone, not just a select few. He emptied himself doing the will of the Father and bringing salvation to the world. It is a gift that continues to give until the end of time. What we need to do has been revealed, and it is up to us to make some changes in our life. Nowhere does it say we have to like everyone, but we have to try to love them. If we can begin by trying to see Christ in others, it might make everything a little easier. As Jesus also shows us, there will be people who will not agree with us. There will be others who challenge us and show their hatred because of who we are and the beliefs that we have. No one said following Jesus was easy, but it is rewarding. Salvation comes through the two great commandments Jesus presents in the Gospel today. While we may never fully be successful in following them, we have to at least work on bettering ourselves. God has called each of us by name to love him with our whole beings and to love his other children. How can we turn down such a loving and compassionate Father? Together we can make a difference. Have a great week! Turkey Ministry The holidays are fast approaching! Now s the time to begin planning for providing turkeys and gravy for the hungry and poor of the inner-city. With your help, we will provide for the holiday dinners at both Thanksgiving and Christmas at Our Daily Bread (located in Cincinnati at Race & Elder Streets, near Findlay Market). If you intend to cook a turkey, please use the following instructions:.cook turkey; cut all meat off the bone. Wrap white and dark meat together and freeze. Save ALL drippings. STRAIN and freeze in a throw-away container. The gravy makers ask that you DO NOT use plastic bags for the juice (they leak). Use hard plastic containers such as Cool Whip tubs..it is a really big help for our ministry if you can make your own gravy. Please mark the containers appropriately GRAVY or JUICE. If you can make extra gravy, in addition to your own, please include a note on the postcard that can be picked up in the Gathering Space beginning the weekend of Oct Please drop off your cooked and frozen turkey and juice, or donated frozen turkey, as below. 6 Bas Relief Project Many thanks to the Knights of Columbus for implementing the Bas Relief Name Plaques ; this small endeavor will offer our parishioners and guests to St. John additional details on the influential Catholics who adorn our walls as Bas Reliefs. These plaques provide a brief bio on who they are, how they served the Church, and their positions within the Catholic Church. They also provide a quote for each person. Special thanks to Larry Butsch, Dave Menchen, Hugh Campbell and the other Knights who helped with this project as well as The Manufactory, the company that produced the laser-engraved plaques as well as the frames. We invite these families to be present and carry a candle in remembrance to be placed in the sanctuary during the procession. We would also like to remember losses due to still-birth, losses of a child at birth or shortly after, young children, and those relatives of parishioners who died over the past year, but may not have been members of our parish community. These same names can be listed in our parish Book of Life and in Our Book of the Innocents, which will both be carried in the Processional of the liturgy. For this purpose, we invite you to enter the names of your deceased loved ones in the books. Pages of the Book of Life and Book of the Innocence will be on a table in the Gathering Space a couple of weeks before the Mass. This year, two of our teen mentors were local high school students and graduates from the camp! This has been a dream of ours for several years and is already bearing fruit in forging deeper ties between our teens and the youth of St. John. Additionally, our young campers now have something to aspire to after they graduate from camp. God bless ALL! -S. Susan Marie Pleiss, OSF Parish Life Director, Good Shepherd

8 I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... The Schroeder Family - Thank You! Download our parish app today! Stay connected with St. John. Set up prayer reminders. Listen to homilies. Scan the code or search your app store for myparish. How have you been called by name? Parishioners Gert and Gus Schroeder and their son spent hours sanding and refinishing our main entry doors in the church. Eighteen years of weather and sun had taken their toll on the doors. Gert and Gus approached us and asked if they could take this project on as a gift to the parish. We are so appreciative to them. We had gotten bids from door companies on this project and the cost was in the thousands! The Schroeder family s hard work has saved our parish a lot of money and the doors look like brand new. It s parishioners like them that make this parish such a wonderful community. Thanks to the Schroeders for answering their calls from God! As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. - 1 Peter 4:10 8 Christmas Baskets Next Week! Nov. 4/5 It s that time of year again already!
