3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MK 1: A leper came to Jesus and kneeling down begged him and said, If you wish, you can make me clean. Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand, touched him, and said to him, I do will it. Be made clean. The leper had no business being anywhere near Jesus. He was not welcomed into the community because he was unclean. Jesus should not have welcomed him, let alone touch him. By touching the leper, Jesus became, in the eyes of the Pharisees, unclean. He was not welcomed into the temple until he was clean once again. But pity, compassion, and mercy do a lot of things to a person. How awful it must have been for anyone to have that disease. Jesus looked into the eyes of the leper and saw way beyond the disease. Jesus saw a human being that needed to be made whole once again. It is interesting, when you think about it. The excitement around the healing was proclaimed everywhere, but Jesus became a person not welcomed into the community. Jesus had to find deserted places to retreat to so that his mission work was not only about healing people of their diseases. People failed to see who Jesus was, which was about more than healing people. Isolation for the Son of God is not the way it should have gone. They began to lose sight of the message and were all about Jesus, the miracle worker. There is surely more to the Good News. So, have you ever been a person pushed outside the community? Have you ever been judged or shunned by people and felt like you didn t belong? Have you ever been sick for a long period of time and people started to look at you differently? Or worse than that, you had been sick for a long time and nobody seemed to miss you or check up on you? Have you ever been mocked because of your religious convictions or your political views? While you might not have leprosy, people may not want you around for one reason or another. Who can you turn to when these feelings come over you? Perhaps you find yourself on bended knees, calling out to the Lord, seeking his loving touch. What if you are the one pushing people out of the community? Through gossip and other actions, you turn your nose at people that you don t think deserve to be in the community. Perhaps you don t care for their sexual preferences, or you think so and so is way too liberal. They don t have the same political views as you do so they must be wrong. Perhaps they aren t as friendly as you think they should be or they really don t look healthy why are they at church this week? We are excellent at pushing people out of the community. It s easy to do; if we are on the offense always pushing people away, we don t have to spend much time on the defense. When we spend so much of our time talking or gossiping about those people we don t have to look at ourselves. The answer, my friends, is to learn from the Master. We must make every effort to have the same approach as Jesus. We must look beyond our limitations and see the heart of others. The more we can see with the eyes of the Lord, the more we can see people for who they really are: children of God. May we continue to find ways to answer our call and be Christ for others. Have a great week! 4 WELCOME PARISH THEME I Have Called You By Name; You Are Mine Lenten Regulations for Fast and Abstinence Lent begins this year on February 14, with Ash Wednesday falling on Valentine s Day. In the midst of chocolate and flowers, we would like to give some reminders about what fasting and abstinence means for the Lenten season. Fast: A day on which only one full meal is allowed. Two other meals sufficient to keep up one s strength are permitted, but together they should be less than one full meal. All adults from ages Abstinence: A day on which the eating of meat is not allowed. The Law of Abstinence binds all Catholics 14 or older. WE WANT YOU TO KNOW No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church, no matter what your current family or marital situation, no matter what your past or present religious affiliation, no matter what your personal history, age, background, race, or color you are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. PRESIDER SCHEDULE Feb. 17 / 18 SATURDAY 5:00 p.m...fr. Don West SUNDAY 8:00 a.m...fr. Don West 9:30 a.m... Fr. Don West 11:30 a.m...fr. Bob Goebel Please note that this schedule is subject to change. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of Abstinence from meat and also days of Fasting. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence from meat. People should seek to do more rather than less. Fast and abstinence on days prescribed should be considered a minimal response to the Lord s call to penance during the season of Lent. Anniversary Celebration Feb. 17 at the 5 p.m. Mass On Saturday, Feb. 17 at the 5 p.m. Mass, the parish will recognize and congratulate those couples who are celebrating their 5th, 10th, 15th and so on in increments of 5, Wedding Anniversary this year. If you are one of these couples, and wish to be recognized at this mass, please contact the parish office at by noon on Thursday, Feb. 15 so you can be part of this wonderful celebration. Happy Anniversary! 5 CHILDREN S FAITH FORMATION Mary Montour - mmontour@stjohnwc.org , ext. 118 First Eucharist Our young people and their parents are just beginning the preparation process for First Eucharist. Last week they reflected on their baptism. Through Baptism, we are initiated into the life of Christ and his Body, the church. Our membership in the Christian community is both a privilege and a responsibility. How are we as a parish witnessing to the Holy Spirit s presence to others? This week the children and families will reflect on gathering together as a church family. The Church is the assembly of those people, belonging to the Lord Jesus, whom God has called together. How do we as a parish come together to pray and care for one another? If you still need to turn in your letter for a Confirmation candidate, please drop off at the parish office. Questions? Concerns? Please contact Mary Montour, mmontour@stjohnwc.org, or , x.118. PSR News Junior High PSR classes resume tonight, Sunday, Feb. 11. No class on Feb. 18. All PSR students and families are reminded and encouraged to consider an act of charity or a simple, but regular, act of kindness, as a way of walking with Jesus during Lent, which begins this week on Feb. 14. The 4th grade book collection for Little Free Libraries, sponsored by the Peace and Justice Commission, is complete. On Tuesday, the children sorted, counted, and boxed the donated books. Thank you for your generosity and thank you to the 4th graders for their hard work and enthusiasm! No stress, just peace! Learn more at Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) Archbishop Schnurr sends his thanks to everyone from St. John who has pledged to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Appeal. 8 I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. Share-a-Lunch Thank you to all contributors of SAL in January! SAL will next meet at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 25 in the Pavilion. Please join us! We will be preparing about 300 peanut butter sandwiches and packing lunches. (Lunches are distributed at Reach Out Lakota and St. Francis- Cincinnati.) In addition to the peanut butter, bread, fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or cups), snacks, and juice boxes needed for the lunches, we welcome other non-perishable donations, too. The pantries are in particular need of healthy cereal, canned meat/ tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, shampoo, baby wipes, deodorant, and female sanitary items. (Since we do not have a refrigerator, please refrain from donating natural peanut butter or highly perishable fruit.) Donations can be dropped off during our meeting time or in advance at the parish office. Thanks again for your support! Please contact Diane Claytor at with questions. St. Vincent de Paul In the Gospel today, we find that Jesus would rise very early before dawn and go to a deserted place to pray and then he went out to preach and to heal. Please pray for the poor and suffering, knowing that you are bringing the love and peace of Jesus to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread. RCIA Thinking about becoming a Catholic? If you are thinking about becoming Catholic, or have questions regarding our convert program, please contact Deacon Jerry Barney at , ext. 121, or jbarney@stjohnwc.org. These groups have been called by name... 8 Justice and Peace Commission Family Promise The J & P Commission has been helping to a small degree with Family Promise of Butler County. This is a group that offers meals and a place to stay along with comprehensive support services for homeless families in our area. These families have children that attend Lakota, Hamilton or Fairfield schools. Bussing is arranged to keep the children active in their home schools while the families move from church to church each week. Families spend the night for one week at host churches in the area, moving to a new host church at the end of the week. St. John does not host a family on our campus, but we are assisting Crestview Presbyterian Church by volunteering as a Meal Host or an Evening Host. This consists of helping with food, serving, and cleanup, as well as being a game leader or just a person to talk to after dinner. There are two shifts: Meal Host, or Evening Host (not overnight). Crestview is also in need of set-up volunteers to help make the beds and make the rooms inviting for guests. (Usually done during the day on a Sunday) For tear-down, families and teens are helpful ( 7 a.m. Sunday). The dates that Crestview will be hosting in 2018 are: April 29 - May 5, July 29 - Aug 2, and Oct Let Jerry Barney know if you are interested in helping: jbarney@ stjohnwc.org. There is one two-hour training. It is held at St. Max. There are two dates to choose from: Feb. 8 from 7-9 p.m. in rooms 8 & 10 in the Parish Complex or March 7 from 7-9 p.m. in rooms 8 & 10. You do not have to register ahead of time, but you are welcome to by e- mailing akmkn@aol.com.
