1 ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC CHURCH 9080 CINCINNATI-DAYTON RD., WEST CHESTER, OH As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, Do you also want to leave? Simon Peter answered him, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. -John 6:66-69 AUGUST 23, 2015 THE TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PARISH THEME: BE CHRIST TO ONE ANOTHER

3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time John 6:60-69 Jesus then said to the Twelve, Do you also want to leave? Simon Peter answered him, Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God. Jesus saw and heard many disciples on the verge of leaving him. It was hard for many to accept that Jesus is the bread of life. Jesus knew not everyone could or would accept what he had to offer to them. He even knew who would betray him and try to destroy his mission. I picture Jesus with sadness as he turns to the Twelve and ask them if they too will leave him. Peter spoke for the others and assured Jesus they are staying. Peter s profession of faith was strong. You can sense he was filled with the Holy Spirit. While they didn t know the whole story or mission of Jesus, the Twelve were going to remain faithful to him. The Twelve continued to be taught by the Master. Given all that Jesus has said while others walked away, the Twelve remained. Over the last several weeks, we have taken a long look at the words of Jesus found in chapter 6 of John s Gospel. We have heard the Master, our Savior, speak about being fed by the Bread of Life. It is not about a simple feeding of a physical hunger; it is about the nourishment that will lead to salvation. Jesus speaks to the disciples and says: It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are Spirit and Life. Because of the Father s love for us, he has sent Jesus to save us. The Father, our Creator, has always loved us and wants us to be with him forever what Jesus offers us is nourishment that sustains life. Are we ready to accept that? When Peter responds to Jesus, are those the words we too speak? Really, who else is there to turn to? Jesus is truly the source of life for which we all hunger. Once we have realized the gift that is placed in our hands, we are called to a real sense of gratitude. As we come to the altar to receive the Body and Blood of Christ, we too become what we receive. Once we have received that gift of Jesus, how in the world can we not share that with others around us? Our gratitude should drive us into our daily lives to bring Christ to those whom we encounter. We are truly called to be Christ to one another. As a poster in my office states: We always have something to be thankful for. God has blessed us, perhaps not as much as we would like, but we truly should be grateful for what we have. We are called to share the Bread of Life: Jesus Christ the Holy One of God. Have a great week! 8 Be Christ To One Another! Liturgy of the Word with Children Assistants/Aides Wanted 9:30 & 11:30 Mass - Once a Month or Every Other Month! Liturgy of the Word with Children is a wonderful way to have the young children of the parish (grades 1, 2, and 3) hear God s word in an understandable and relatable way while also having fun. Our current leaders do an excellent job, but it can be a little tough when there is only one leader for Mass. Keeping an eye on children going to the restroom and also listening for the time to send the kids back to the main church are difficult tasks to manage while also leading. These tasks interrupt the time the leaders have to give the Word of God and also take their attention away from the children in this ministry. We would love to have an aide/assistant to help the leaders with those kinds of tasks during the dismissals. As an aide/assistant, you wouldn t have to lead or prepare anything, you would just have to be there for the leader and help in any way you can. This is something you would only have to do once a month or even once every other month during the 9:30 or 11:30 Mass. This can also be anyone 16 years of age or older, and for those young adults looking for service hours, this is a perfect way to complete them. If you are interested in becoming an aide/assistant, please contact Scott Steinke at the Parish Offices ( ) or at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org for more information on this ministry. Reach Out Lakota Supply Sunday On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of nonperishable food, or a toiletry, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. These donations are given to Reach Out Lakota. Thank you for your support of this community organization. A Note from Your St. Vincent de Paul To all our parishioners, please know that we are here for you when you need us! Contact us at ext Please also note that volunteers are always welcome! Joining the St. John Council of St. Vincent de Paul is a wonderful way to help your community. If you are interested, please call the number listed above. Volunteers Needed Members of St. John are invited to assist with the Community Dinner that is served weekly at Faith United Methodist Church on Cox Rd. The Stepping Forward program provides a dinner, along with job and life skills classes, homework help for children, and referrals to needed resources. They also have a Choice Food Pantry open for families within the Lakota School System. We are partnering with Faith to provide help in the cooking, serving, and clean up of one dinner. We will be helping on Tuesday, September 1. There are different types of jobs/times available: Meal Provider (cooking on-site) - 3:30-5:45 (4 volunteers) Dishwashers - 4:30-8ish (2 volunteers) Dining Room Attendants - 5:45-8 (2 volunteers) Servers - 5:45-8ish (9 volunteers) Runners - 5:50-6:30 (6 volunteers) A lot of help is needed to make this work. Please contact Cheryl Campbell at h.c.campbell76@gmail.com or to volunteer or ask questions. Please note the job and time that you wish to volunteer. Meal Ministry at St. John Our Meal Ministers are people who make meals for members of our parish and community who are going through a tough time and could use a few homemade meals. In addition to helping families in need, this ministry also makes meals for Father Don to take home every Thursday. We use a simple online sign-up tool that our Meal Ministers utilize to choose when and for whom they cook. The online site also explains any special food needs and gives delivery instructions. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Joan at ext. 124 or jseibenick@stjohnwc.org. More importantly, if you know of a local friend or family member who could use the assistance of our ministry, please send Joan a note or give her a call. A warm meal delivered to the door is a personal and meaningful way to reach out to someone in need. Many of us know someone who may be experiencing a hardship. We can take a meal to them! Just give us the name and we will do all of the work. Companions on the Journey Schedule The St. John grief support group Companions on the Journey meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month. Please contact Ron Meyer at or Karen Marvich at for more information. 8
