3 FATHER DON S REFLECTION MK 8:27-35 But who do you say that I am? Peter said to him in reply, You are the Christ. Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. Did Peter really know what he was saying? If we continue reading, we realize that Peter did not know the whole story. Peter had a vision of who Jesus was, but he wasn t willing to accept the view that Jesus presented to the apostles. No wonder Jesus didn t want them to tell anyone. Jesus predicted his suffering and death, but that prediction didn t fit what the apostles had in mind for the Christ. How could something so painful and non-majestic be the right fit for one from heaven? Every time Jesus brought up his fate, the apostles would find a way to change the subject. It just didn t fit their image of their Master. Not only did Jesus call for his own suffering and death, but he called for all who wished to follow him to take up their own crosses. Jesus called us to deny our very selves. Now is the time to put away selfish ways and become other-centered. Jesus is allowed to make that call. Jesus would empty himself on the cross so that we all may have life: life to the fullest. No wonder they wanted to change the subject when Jesus spoke this way. He called the apostles (and us) to be people of action. Jesus gave us a purpose, and it calls for sacrifice in the name of the kingdom. It is not enough to identify Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. We must embrace all that it means in our personal lives. It is the reason that Jesus told the apostles not to tell anyone. We each have to understand what that means to us. While we all may know Jesus as the Son of God, we have to make that real in our own hearts. Once we have made that awareness real to us, it can forever change us. We can t embrace the Christ without embracing the cross. Not only must we embrace Jesus sacrifice on the cross for our salvation, but the crosses of sacrifice that we also bear. We must all make our journeys of self-sacrifice so we can rise with Jesus forever. I know that we all struggle with the question that Jesus asked the apostles: But who do you say that I am? Why do I say that? Well, I think we tend to make God into our own image and likeness. We might not admit it, but I know that most of us want our faith lives to be as easy as possible. We d love for God to be right there to give us all we want without any regard to whether or not it s what we need. After all, we know ourselves better than anyone else, right? Wrong! God knows us better than we know ourselves. He has a Master Plan and when we are ready to embrace it, he will be ready to lead us on our faith journey. This faith journey means putting aside selfish ways and following the way of the Lord. Let go and let God lead us to the cross. That can be so freeing and life-giving. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. Jesus says it all. Now let us go out and live it to the fullest. Have a great week! 5 CHILDREN S FAITH FORMATION Mary Montour - mmontour@stjohnwc.org , ext. 118 PSR News PSR began last week, offering our young parishioners in 1st through 8th grades opportunities to learn and share their faith with peers. We know that our children are a true gift to the parish and to their families. Parents are called to be part of one of the most important ministries in the Church: sharing faith with others. Faith practices begin in the home, so our goal is to augment and build on the positive model of parents. Occasionally parents will be asked to help in the classroom or with special projects--please answer these requests with your presence and assistance. Together we can continue the faith formation promises made at your child(ren) s baptism. For more information, please check out the Faith Formation page on our website, or contact Mary Montour at mmontour@stjohnwc.org. 6 Book Club - My Life with the Saints Looking for a different way to share your faith with a small group? Love to read and discuss contemporary topics? Then the St. John Book Club may be for you! We will start meeting again on Tuesday evenings, beginning Sept. 18, in the Hospitality Room at 7:30 p.m. (following the 7 p.m. Mass). Our next book is My Life with the Saints by Father James Martin SJ. Martin s inspiring, witty, and always fascinating memoir encompasses saints from the whole of Christian history from St. Peter to Dorothy Day. His saintly friends include Francis of Assisi, Ignatius of Loyola, Mother Teresa, and other beloved figures. They accompany the author on a lifelong pilgrimage that includes stops in a sunlit square of a French town, a quiet retreat house on a New England beach, the gritty housing projects of inner-city Chicago, the sprawling slums of Nairobi, and a gorgeous Baroque church in Rome. This rich, vibrant, stirring narrative shows how the saints can help all of us find our way in the world. For more information, please contact either Steve Neitzel (513) sneitzel53@ gmail.com or Marti Lemond mdlemond@gmail.com Parenting Skills: Kids and Technology Sunday, Sept. 30, 6:45-8:00 p.m. in Favret Hall This powerful program covers the basics concerning the evolution of the mobile and broadband world as it relates to student communication, including: inappropriate online behavior, bullying, and its impact on mental health. Would you like to better understand the Mass? Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Robert Barron and be transformed through insights on this most privileged and intimate encounter with our Lord Jesus Christ. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm, how it resonates with a call from God and a response from his people, the Church, and, most importantly, how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. The Mass will help you understand how to fully, consciously, and actively participate in the source and summit of the Christian life. Each meeting allows about 25 minutes for viewing the video, and 45 minutes for discussion. All are welcome.

These prayerful reflections on the Joseph story, the Incarnation, and the last discourse of Jesus offer comfort and challenge to anyone with an empty nest. We will meet in the Hospitality Room on Wednesday mornings from 9:15 10:45 a.m. starting Sept. 12, led by Deacon Jerry Barney. Once this study is completed, the group will decide together the topic for our next study. 8 I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. Keeping Our Grounds Beautiful - Thanks, Ed! By Angela Pugliano Have you ever looked around our campus and wondered how we keep the grounds looking so nice? St. John is blessed with a large campus full of plush green grass, colorful flower beds, and beautiful trees, but it didn t come that way! We have a wonderful, hardworking maintenance crew that works so hard every day to keep our grounds beautiful. However, we also rely on help from volunteers like Ed McDermott. Ed sometimes feels like part of our staff. A few times a week, Ed will come to St. John to mow our lawns and keep our grounds looking fresh and clean. After he cuts, he will often stop by the parish office to have a snack and chat with the staff; sometimes, he even brings in a little friend, like the baby bunnies he saved from the mower a few weeks back! Ed is a pilot for Southwest Airlines and has been a member of the parish since If you ve ever put tickets into the plane tickets basket at our festival, you have Ed to thank. For every 80 hours of volunteer work that he does, he is given 1 roundtrip plane ticket. He donates these tickets each year so that we can offer one of our most popular baskets in Basket Bonanza. So, you can see that means that he has worked over 160 hours mowing our grass AND has chosen to give the tickets to the church! He is a hard worker, and a truly generous spirit. Thank you, Ed, for your generosity, time, and talent! Catholic Charities Mental Health Services We all have stress and challenges. We all can use a little help from time to time.
