3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 2:1-12 behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Here we are celebrating the Epiphany of the Lord. The magi asked Herod a question and jealousy was shown within him. He had no clue what was going on. All he knew was that someone might be trying to take over his role and he was not happy about it. God had other plans for the magi and who they discovered. Herod would not know the location of the newborn king for now, anyway. So, the question is: where is the newborn king? In all the Christmas rush, did you manage to find him? Was there a light that led you to the site where Jesus was? If you found him, and I know you did, what gift did you present to him? Did the gift come from the heart? Hopefully it was not a gift card purchased online. Worse yet, I hope you did not re-gift something. Well, since everything is a gift from God, I guess everything we give to him, in a sense, is re-gifting. My fear is that not everyone found the new-born king. Some people seem to have lost sight of Jesus in their lives. Some might even be angry at the Father for not giving them what they feel they need. That s pretty bold on their part! Somehow, we feel that everything that comes our way is God s doing. I don t think that is right. God is all about goodness, mercy and compassion and I truly believe he feels the pain his children feel. So maybe the gifts we bring to the King are our brokenness, our pain, and our emptiness. They are gifts that come from the very core of who we are. It is a gift, I believe, he would embrace with open arms. God does not want us to hurt or be in pain; he only wants goodness for us. When we come into his open arms, he will hold us and walk with us as we journey with him. Whatever gifts we bring the King, it is important to be grateful for what we do have. It may not be what we want; we may even hunger for more, but we can t forget to show gratitude. If we come before him and do him homage with a sincere, thank you that will be a wonderful gift indeed. But I bet if we all looked deeper, we would find even more that we can give from the heart to the king. We can learn from him and share his compassion, his mercy, and his unconditional love for others. When we realize the King is dwelling among us, we discover the King everywhere. We can find Him in family, in the community, in the stranger and in the breaking of the bread and the blessing of the cup. It is all a gift and the greatest gift is the one we receive and then give to others: Jesus Christ in the Eucharist. Never miss a chance to show gratitude to the King. We should always be humble before him and want to be in his presence. We may not have the gifts of the magi, but I feel we have something more valuable: our hearts. Open up and let your heart guide you to give more in the name of Jesus Christ the King. Have a great week! Technology has changed our lives. From the invention of electricity, the car, the internet and the smart phone to the automation of just about everything in our lives, we live in a world that is faster and more efficient. Our parish uses technology in many meaningful ways. Our security system has several automated features and we can also program our church s heating and cooling from smart devices as well. Our voice mail system sends messages to our phones. We have a parish website, facebook page and app. Our parish uses technology in so many ways in order for us to share our message with everyone. One of the most important ways that we use technology at St. John is in our electronic giving. Our parishioners can go online and setup their regular (or one time) giving in five minutes or less. Well over a third of our income comes to us from online giving. Let me explain why this is so important to us. When families go on vacation or miss a weekend Mass because of illness or emergencies, that means that we miss their giving. Our bills do not go away when people are absent. We still have to pay our utilities, our employees and our vendors. When our parishioners give electronically, we know that we can rely on that income stream. It give us a dependable and regular income even if there are times when people can t get to church. I encourage you on National Technology Day to consider going online and setting up a regular electronic giving for your family. It is easy to do. Just go to our website at and click on the Donate/Payment button. Follow the instructions to use your credit card or bank account for payment. The site is secure. And, while you are deciding on your electronic giving, please prayerfully consider increasing your giving this year. Your stewardship is so important to our parish s success. Thank you for your generosity! - Joan Seibenick Fair Trade Coffee Sale - Need Volunteers Jan. 20/21 Want to be of service to your parish? We are in need of a few more volunteers to help with the fair trade table once a month at Mass. Our fair trade sale will be after all Masses in the Gathering Space on Jan. 20 and 21. Buying ethically grown coffee, tea and chocolate ensures proper wages for workers around the globe.

The Archdiocese Catholic Social Action Office announced that 15,000 Save the Dreamers letters were collected from our parishes. The letters were hand delivered to the local offices of the Senators and Representatives. Thank you to everyone that supported this effort. We are deeply concerned by the many years of failure by Congress, whether controlled by Democrats or by Republicans, to address the plight of immigrants who were brought to the United States as children in the arms of their parents and who have no legal means to regularize their status. With such an outpouring of support from thousands of Ohioans, we urge Congress to finally provide a solution to this crisis and a path to citizenship for DREAMers. Ongoing opportunities for education and service to migrants and refugees exist through Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio at (513) or org/ and Catholic Social Services of the Miami Valley at (937) or For more information, or to learn about other upcoming events, please contact the Archdiocese of Cincinnati s Catholic Social Action Office at (513) , ext. 2660, or csa@ catholiccincinnati.org.
