3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, Jesus summoned the crowd again and said to them, Hear me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person; but the things that come out from within are what defile. From within people, from their hearts, come evil thoughts, unchastity, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, licentiousness, envy, blasphemy, arrogance, folly. All these evils come from within and they defile. In today s Gospel, the Pharisees and scribes complained to Jesus that the disciples didn t wash their hands before eating a meal. It seems that the Pharisees and scribes are paying a little too much attention to the goings-on in the lives of Jesus and his disciples, but I am sure everyone would agree that washing your hands before a meal is a healthy thing to do. I also am sure that parents teach their children from an early age to wash their hands, but the Pharisees and the scribes are really trying to get the point across that the disciples are being unfaithful to the teachings of all Jews, meaning the teaching of the elders. Jesus challenges them and quotes the prophet Isaiah. In the quote, Jesus speaks about authentic worship. Through the prophet he tells them their worship is in vain. God s ways are not clearly their ways. They are dependent on manmade laws daring to think that they know the will of the Father. They have placed a higher importance in following human tradition while ignoring the commandments of God. Jesus tells them in plain language that the source of being unclean is from within a person. One only needs to see the heart of someone to know whether they are Christ-centered or self-centered. We cannot blame anyone but ourselves for the choices we make. While others may influence our lives, in the end it is our choice alone. While evil may be all around us, it is only when our heart receives that evil that it truly becomes our own. As Jesus tells those in the Gospel today, it is the evils that come from within that defile us and make us unclean. Does that mean that we are ever condemned? Of course not! When we realize that we are unclean and evil has taken over our lives, we have a loving and forgiving God who will always heal a contrite heart. Once we have finished playing the blame game and admit that we have sinned and our hearts are drifting from God, we must humbly admit that we need God s help. When we realize that we need to have authentic worship and a heart that is turned towards the Lord, then we are clean from the inside out. When we realize that it is God s ways, not our own selfish ways that are important, then we are made whole once again. Jesus calls us to authentic worship worship that comes from a heart that is turned to the Lord. As we come to receive him in the Eucharist, let us become what we receive so that we might be Christ to one another. Have a great week! Readings for This Week August 31-September 4, 2015 Monday 1 Thes 4:13-18; Ps 96; Lk 4:16-30 Tuesday 1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11; Ps 27; Lk 4:31-37 Wednesday Col 1:1-8; Ps 52:10, 11; Lk 4:38-44 Thursday Col 1:9-14; Ps 98; Lk 5:1-11 Friday Col 1:15-20; Ps 100; Lk 5:33-39 Daily readings can be accessed online from our parish website, You can also access them from our parish app! 3 Readings for Next Weekend September 5/6 The 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7a Be strong, fear not! 8 Be Christ To One Another! Liturgy of the Word with Children Assistants/Aides Wanted 9:30 & 11:30 Mass - Once a Month or Every Other Month! Liturgy of the Word with Children is a wonderful way to have the young children of the parish (grades 1, 2, and 3) hear God s word in an understandable and relatable way while also having fun. Our current leaders do an excellent job, but it can be a little tough when there is only one leader for Mass. Keeping an eye on children going to the restroom and also listening for the time to send the kids back to the main church are difficult tasks to manage while also leading. These tasks interrupt the time the leaders have to give the Word of God and also take their attention away from the children in this ministry. We would love to have an aide/assistant to help the leaders with those kinds of tasks during the dismissals. As an aide/assistant, you wouldn t have to lead or prepare anything, you would just have to be there for the leader and help in any way you can. This is something you would only have to do once a month or even once every other month during the 9:30 or 11:30 Mass. This can also be anyone 16 years of age or older, and for those young adults looking for service hours, this is a perfect way to complete them. If you are interested in becoming an aide/assistant, please contact Scott Steinke at the Parish Offices ( ) or at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org for more information on this ministry. Reach Out Lakota Supply Sunday On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of nonperishable food, or a toiletry, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. These donations are given to Reach Out Lakota. Thank you for your support of this community organization. A Note from Your St. Vincent de Paul To all our parishioners, please know that we are here for you when you need us! Contact us at ext Please also note that volunteers are always welcome! Joining the St. John Council of St. Vincent de Paul is a wonderful way to help your community. If you are interested, please call the number listed above. Volunteers Needed Members of St. John are invited to assist with the Community Dinner that is served weekly at Faith United Methodist Church on Cox Rd. The Stepping Forward program provides a dinner, along with job and life skills classes, homework help for children, and referrals to needed resources. They also have a Choice Food Pantry open for families within the Lakota School System. We are partnering with Faith to provide help in the cooking, serving, and clean up of one dinner. We will be helping on Tuesday, September 1. There are different types of jobs/times available: Meal Provider (cooking on-site) - 3:30-5:45 (4 volunteers) Dishwashers - 4:30-8ish (2 volunteers) Dining Room Attendants - 5:45-8 (2 volunteers) Servers - 5:45-8ish (9 volunteers) Runners - 5:50-6:30 (6 volunteers) A lot of help is needed to make this work. Please contact Cheryl Campbell at h.c.campbell76@gmail.com or to volunteer or ask questions. Please note the job and time that you wish to volunteer. Is Grief Weighing You Down? After the loss of a loved one, it s normal to feel the effects of grief. Grief is not something we get over, rather it s something we work through. The Companions on a Journey grief support group meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. Here you can express your grief and learn how to go through the grief process so that you can begin this new chapter of your life in a healthy way. Please contact Ron Meyer or Karen Marvich if you have any questions. Divorced & Separated A support group for divorced and separated adults meets Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. We meet weekly to share life experiences during difficult times. You do not need to walk this path alone. Give yourself a gift of time for sharing and support with others who understand. For more information, call Mary Taylor at ghm.mtaylor@gmail.com. 8
