3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION Luke 14:25-33 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple In the same way, anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple. So, you really want to be a disciple of Jesus? This is a rough gospel to embrace. It really hits at the core of who we are. Jesus asks us to do whatever it takes to be fully open to being a disciple of Him. We can t just say that we think it s a good idea and that we will get to it later we have plenty of time. The thing is, we actually don t. There is a sense of true urgency in Jesus voice. Jesus calls us to be just as focused as he is at this time in his life. Jesus eyes are fixed on Jerusalem. He knows that in Jerusalem, the journey to the cross awaits him. Out of unconditional love, Jesus takes on the sins of the world and opens the gates of heaven. In Jesus death on the cross and his resurrection, that path to the kingdom has been open to all God s children, even you and me. I believe Jesus calls us to a sense of purpose, a turning of our faces to the journey to our own Jerusalem. How many times have we had the chance to pick up our own crosses and begin that journey? How many obstacles were in the way? How many of those obstacles were of our own doing and how many were placed there by our family and friends? It really doesn t matter. With the grace of God and the faith we have been given, we should be able reach for the cross and begin to die for our selfishness. I think when we begin to walk with our cross, we will not be walking alone. The first disciples learned that Jesus did not leave them. Even though they scattered out of fear, Jesus came to them to give them peace and he breathed onto them the Holy Spirit. Jesus gave them the courage to be Christ to others and to preach and live out the Good News. We are no different than those first disciples. Our cross is before us and Jesus is ready to walk the journey with us. But the response has to cost us something along the way. Jesus tells us we have to empty our lives of the earthly wealth that seems to control us. The material world is not going to save us. We have to begin to take down the altars of sacrifice that we seem to have for idols of the material world. Things like money, or even the newest toy on the market, can really control us and dominate our time and energy. Is that really our number one priority? Isn t the call to be Jesus disciple the most important thing in our life? Don t you think it is about time that it becomes number one? It is time to be more other-centered and less self-centered. We are constantly being called by name to be Jesus disciples. No response is still an answer, but not a very good one. Let us be open to God s calling and help one another to take up our crosses and being Christ for others in our daily lives. Participants are asked to purchase their own books. Who s normal? Not you, that s for sure! No one you ve ever met, either. None of us are normal according to God s definition, and the closer we get to each other, the plainer that becomes. Yet for all our quirks, sins, and jagged edges, we need each other. Community is more than just a word it is one of our most fundamental requirements. In Everybody s Normal Till You Get to Know Them, teacher and bestselling author John Ortberg zooms in on the things that make community tick. You ll get a thought-provoking look at God s heart, at others, and at yourself. With humor, insight, and a gift for storytelling, Ortberg shows how community pays tremendous dividends in happiness, health, support, and growth. It s where all of us weird, unwieldy people encounter God s love in tangible ways and discover the transforming power of being loved, accepted, and valued just the way we are. Contact Steve Neitzel (513) or sneitzel53@ gmail.com if you would like to join. 7 Setting the Table of the Lord If you have ever set your table at home for a big family meal, then you already have an idea of what our Liturgical Ministers do every weekend for Mass. The Altar Attendants, Sacristans, Hospitality Minister Captains, Hospitality Ministers, Eucharistic Minister Captains, Eucharistic Ministers, and Lectors all play a big role in The Meal we share together. Many of our parishioners give their time and talents each and every weekend, and we are absolutely grateful for the wonderful gift they give. But, we fall very short on help for each Mass. We are definitely in need of Altar Attendants, Sacristans, Hospitality Ministers, and Eucharistic Ministers every weekend. We encourage you and your family to prayerfully consider being part of the Liturgical Ministry. Training is simple and takes little of your time. We would appreciate your consideration of participating in this ministry and would certainly love to have you! If you are interested, please contact Scott Steinke at , or him at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org. Thank you very much! Hospitality Ministers: Giving a Warm Welcome Each Week Our Hospitality Ministers at St. John s give a warm welcome to those coming to the Table of the Lord. They make themselves present in the Gathering Space, give all a Good Morning! or Good Afternoon! that come through the doors, and hand them a Worship Aid for mass. It is a rather simple task, but makes a great difference for all who attend our parish to see St. John Church as a warm and welcoming community of faith-filled Christians. The hospitality ministers have many duties, but their main task is to be the first face that people see when they walk into church. We need your help! If you are someone who can shake a hand, give a Good Morning! or Good Evening!, and hand out a Worship Aid with a warm smile, then volunteering as a Hospitality Minister is for you! This is also a great opportunity for all members of the family to volunteer together and get the kids involved in a wonderful way. If you would like more information about how you can be a Hospitality Minister, please call Scott Steinke at ext. 115 or at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org. It would be great to see plenty of faces welcoming everyone as we worship together! A Note from Your St. Vincent de Paul Society Please know that we are here for you when you need us! Contact us at ext Volunteers are always welcomed! And thank you to all for your continued support! We at St. Vincent de Paul are always grateful for your continued support through your generous donations and prayers. Reach Out Lakota On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of non-perishable food, or a toiletry, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. These donations are given to Reach Out Lakota. Thank you for your support of this community organization. Volunteers needed for Family Promise To meet the growing need of giving shelter to the homeless, our parish would like to participate in the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Shelter for Homeless people in West Chester. There are 14 churches in our area that take turns on a rotating basis, hosting families that are in need of a place to stay. The goal is to provide temporary shelter, affording the families the time they need to rebound and ultimately stand on their own again. Although St. John Church will not be hosting, we do hope to assist this ministry with volunteers. Volunteers are needed to cook, serve meals, play with children, help with homework, and some may even stay overnight. They interact with guests treating them with respect and responding with compassion. We are also looking for someone to serve as Coordinator to schedule the people needed for the ministry. If you would like to help in any of the ways listed, a 90 minute training seminar is first required. If you have questions, or would like to help contact Deacon Jerry Barney at jbarney@stjohnwc.org, or , x121. Download our parish app today! Stay connected with St. John. Set up prayer reminders. Listen to homilies. Scan the code or search your app store for myparish. 7

8 I Have Called You By Name... Our New Parish Theme! St. John the Evangelist has created this new theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. For the next few months, we will be highlighting groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Knights of Columbus We say Thank you! to our Knights of Columbus! The Knights have taken over the Poker booth at the festival, a booth that has struggled in the past few years. Of course, with the Knights at the helm, the poker booth was full and successful the entire festival weekend. The profitability of the booth was up and the overall income was up. This is just one example of how the Knights are amazingly active in our parish. The Knights participate in several charitable programs like Chip in for Charity, and they also are in charge of one of our most important Parish events, the annual Lenten Fish Fry! You will see Knights hard at work at just about every event in our parish. Their help is invaluable when it comes to moving furniture, setting up for events, and raising funds for St. John. If you are interested in becoming a part of this important ministry, please contact Pete Seibenick ( ), their Recruiting Coordinator. We are blessed to have them as our brothers in Christ! Bereavement Ministry If you ve ever lost a loved one, you know that those involved with Bereavement Ministry take their time and talents to make you feel appreciated, prayed for, and loved. Losing someone is a difficult thing to go through, but it s even more difficult when you feel alone; they are here to make sure you don t have to feel that way. The Bereavement Ministry meets with the family to plan the funeral Mass and makes all necessary arrangements, they take care of and coordinate all luncheons that are requested by the families of our parish, and they prepare our gathering space for visitations if requested by the families and/or the funeral home. If you are interested in knowing more about this ministry, or would like to know how you can become a volunteer and serve in some way, please contact Scott Steinke at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org or (513) ext Meal Ministry Our Meal Ministers are people who make meals for members of our parish and community who are going through a tough time and could use a few homemade meals. We thank them so much for how they fulfil their call from God. There is a simple online sign-up tool that our Meal Ministers utilize to choose when and for whom they cook. The online site also explains any special food needs and gives delivery instructions. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Joan at ext. 124 or jseibenick@ stjohnwc.org. More importantly, if you know of a local friend or family member who could use the assistance of our ministry, please send Joan a note or give her a call. Many of us know someone who may be experiencing a hardship; A warm meal delivered to the door is a personal and meaningful way to reach out to someone in need, and we thank them for this service.
