Our Gospel reading tells of an event that took place just a few days prior to the cross. Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem and had stopped in the village of Bethany for a visit with some of his closest friends. Apparently they prepared a banquet in his honor; and while they were eating, a woman opened a jar of expensive perfume and began to anoint the head of Jesus. In his account of this same event, St. John tells us that the woman was Mary, the sister of Lazarus. The significance of this event does not lie primarily in what Mary did or how much it cost, but rather in why she did it. Jesus related it to his death. He said, She has anticipated anointing my body for burial. Whether that means that Mary understood the cross and its nearness, we cannot be certain. One thing is certain something in the heart of Mary responded to something in the heart of Jesus, and she did her best to share that with him. The word love does not appear anywhere in the story, but the spirit of love is written all through it. Maybe Mary wasn t very good with words. Some of us are like that. Then again, there are times in all of our lives when we get beyond the range of verbal communication. That s the reason we laugh and cry. The thing we are feeling in that moment cannot be expressed by words. That is where Mary must have been. Her heart was overflowing. She very much wanted to tell the Lord that she cared, but speech seemed so inadequate; so she brought the perfume and poured it out in a gesture of impulsive devotion. Her critics estimated the perfume to be worth three hundred pieces of silver. We have no way of knowing how much that would be in today s currency but it was obviously a considerable amount of money. For Mary, it may have represented a lifetime of saving. But such is the extravagance of love. Someone who really cares doesn t always take the time to calculate the cost. There are times when loving is the costliest thing in the entire world, because love can be extravagant. The classic example, of course, is the Cross of Calvary. Love cost our Lord everything that he had, right down to the last beat of his heart. He, too, was a spendthrift. In a beautiful part of II Corinthians, St. Paul wrote, Though he was rich, yet for our sakes he became poor that you through his poverty might be rich. We ve been talking about extravagance in terms of money. Jesus measured it in terms of blood, and even that was not too great a price to pay. Our Lord s kind of love was the most extravagant of all. 4 Holy Spirit Catholic Church March 25, th Grade Mornings with Mom & Dad are THIS Sunday, March 25 in the dining room during your child s normal Faith Formation time. Parents, plan on joining your child for another fun, faith-filled session but remember these sessions are NOT part of the sacramental preparation process. Also, Mornings with Mom & Dad are meant to give you and your child some quality one-on-one time, so please take advantage of our wonderful nursery for younger siblings. This allows ALL families attending to enjoy the session without disruption. 5th Grade Mornings with Mom & Dad are scheduled for Sunday, April 8 after our Easter Break. Speaking of the Easter Break, there are no Faith Formation classes next Sunday, April 1, as we celebrate Easter Sunday! Classes resume Sunday, April 8, when will have our class Easter Egg Hunts! Keep donating those plastic Easter eggs, individually wrapped Easter candy and small, stuffable Easter prizes (stickers, erasers, etc.). We will be accepting donations up to Wednesday, March 28, as all parish business offices will be closed as of noon Holy Thursday, March 29 through Wednesday, April 4. We ll need the extra time to stuff them all! Speaking of egg stuffing, if you d like to help stuff all these plastic eggs and you re needing a service project to finish out those Confirmation or school community service hours, see Deborah this Sunday morning! We ll have plenty of them set aside for you to do... SACRAMENTS & SUCH. The next Parent & Student session for the Sacrament of Confirmation is THIS Sunday, March 25 from 1:30-3:45 p.m. in the gym. The next Parent & Student session for the Sacrament of Eucharist is Sunday, April 8 from 1:30-4 p.m. in the gym and DOES INCLUDE PRACTICE! Please make every effort to attend since we want to make sure your child is properly prepared to celebrate their First Communion on April 21/22. Also, please contact Sharon Bush at for childcare needs for younger siblings to avoid distractions/disruptions since we will be in the sanctuary for practice. All RCIA participants, children & adults, Easter Vigil Rehearsal is today, March 25, at 1:30 p.m. in the church. Put on your fancy hat and gloves and join us for an afternoon of tea, light lunch and dress-up at our Mother & Daughter Tea on Saturday, May 12 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Open to ALL mothers and daughters, grandmothers and granddaughters, young and old, parishioner or non-parishioner. Cost is $10.00 per person and needs to be paid in advance. Please make your RSVP at the Community Center front desk on Sundays during Faith Formation or during normal business office hours. Space is limited to the first 250 RSVP s so make your reservation today! We re also looking for a group of hubbies/men who would like to be sharp dressed men and serve at the tea. No cooking involved; just helping serve the food and making the ladies feel special. Contact Deborah if you re interested in helping! AND if you d like to help cook and serve at our tea, we can always use extra hands in the kitchen and on the floor. Please contact Deborah if you would like to help. Lunch is included! Teens, this is a great way to finish up those school community service hours. You all do such an awesome job! This is the last weekend to for our Lenten Kids Again Hunger Campaign! Drop in that spare change in the to-go containers located in your child s Faith Formation classroom. Holy Spirit s 2018 goal is 10,000 meals. Pizza party to the CFF class with the most donations, which currently still belongs to Kindergarten A at 11:15. A tremendous thank you to everyone who came out and enjoyed our Feast of St. Joseph s event! A special thank you to Cindy Meyer for coming in early off her vacation to make sure we had plenty of baked treats out for everyone to enjoy. Early Registration for the 2018/19 Faith Formation year will begin after the Easter Break. Watch the bulletin and website for more details! Also, registration for VBS 2018, One Way Café, will also begin with lots of new, cool changes, courtesy of our Knights of Columbus. And, as you can tell from the theme, I m on the hunt for roadside diner items for our VBS décor so if you have a anything we could use, please let Deborah know.
