3 FATHER DON S REFLECTION MK 3:20-35 When his relatives heard of this, they set out to seize him, for they said, He is out of his mind. Your mother and your brothers are outside asking for you. Who are my mother and brothers? And looking around at those seated in the circle, he said, Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother. It s amazing what we do when we don t understand things. Sometimes, we think that we are right and everyone else is wrong. It couldn t possibly be any other way for some people. The people of Jesus time saw what was going on and couldn t accept that Jesus was the real deal. It seems harsh, some of the things we hear in today s gospel. Jesus relatives think he is mad. We are never told just who these relatives are in the gospel. At the end of the gospel, we are told that they might be his brothers and his mother. To me, it seems odd that Jesus mother, Mary, would see her son as mad. That doesn t make sense since Mary knew from the beginning that he was the Son of God. But Jesus answer makes perfect sense to me. Jesus is clearly telling us that family is not only about our blood relatives. There is a new view of family here. It is rather simple when you think about it. Whoever does the will of God is now family. That s why when he looked at those around him, he identified his family. Wouldn t it have been awesome sitting there when he made his declaration? It would be incredible to know that you were a part of Jesus family as his brother or sister. However, if we have been following the commandments, we are already family. Now, we could sit and try to figure out all the commandments handed down in time or we could use the two basic commandments that Jesus gave us. Those commandments encompass all the others and then some. Love God with your whole being and your neighbor as yourself. Trying to follow these words takes courage on our part and a huge amount of grace from the Lord. We can only achieve this goal as a united group, standing side by side with our brothers and sisters, embracing them with dignity and compassion. There is no way we can go it alone. If you have an attitude that it s just between Me and God, you will fall short because we were not made to live in isolation. We are social beings and we are part of the one Body of Christ. By our baptisms, we have joined into the family of God. Our Father cares for us and wants us to be his adopted children. He gave his only Son so that we might have life. The Spirit is given to instill in our hearts the fire of the love that is to sustain us. What a family we belong to! But with any family, there comes a real sense of responsibility. Participation is mandatory. One isn t Catholic just because their name is on the parish roster. There is a call to action, to learn the message of Jesus life on earth and to follow the commands he left us. How are you living your life? Is the gospel at your center? When is the last time you participated in Jesus family activities? When Jesus looks into your eyes and calls you, does he see you as a brother or sister? If you are looking at the ground when he looks at you, that says a lot. Face the Lord, face your brothers and sisters, and know we are all family. Go out and live it. Have a great week! 4 WELCOME PARISH THEME I Have Called You By Name; You Are Mine WE WANT YOU TO KNOW No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church, no matter what your current family or marital situation, no matter what your past or present religious affiliation, no matter what your personal history, age, background, race, or color you are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. PRESIDER SCHEDULE June 16 / 17 SATURDAY 5:00 p.m...fr. Don West SUNDAY 8:00 a.m... Fr. Don West 9:30 a.m...fr. Don West 11:30 a.m...fr. Don West Please note that this schedule is subject to change. Want more? Visit our website at Like our Facebook page: St. John the Evangelist West Chester & Follow us on Pastoral Council Election Process Changing Where did the Pastoral Council elections go? Good question to ask. We have started the process to pare down the number of members of Council, beginning with the year. We are moving from 15 members to 12 members. With the people who are currently on council, we will already have enough members for this next year. So, we will not be holding a 2018 election. In 2019, when we need to add more members to council, we will be using a discernment process for those new additions. While there will still be a time to nominate people (or yourself) to serve on council, there will be no actual election. Instead, there will be a night of prayer and discernment to allow the spirit to help choose who should serve on the council. Instead of voting, we will have a selection process for those who have prayerfully discerned themselves as ready to serve. New members will still serve for a three-year term, and we will choose four members each year, keeping the total to twelve. Many parishes in the archdiocese are using this updated process and it is working very well. We will have more details early next year describing the discernment and timing for the year. May we all trust in the Holy Spirit to guide our parish community! Baptism Sacristans Needed Would you like to be a special part of celebrating our parish baptisms? We need another Baptism Sacristan for the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass, which occurs just once a quarter. We also need another Baptism Sacristan to help at the 1:00 p.m. Sunday baptisms outside of Mass, serving about once a month. Jerry will provide you with training, plus give you a chance to shadow a Baptism Sacristan serving at a baptism before you are placed in the schedule. If you end up with a schedule conflict, you can trade places with another Sacristan. Please pray about it. If you believe you are called to serve in this important ministry, please contact Deacon Jerry Barney at , or jbarney@stjohnwc.org. 4 Fr. Don West, Pastor Shop at Kroger and Help St. John! Mass becomes much more meaningful. You are not just sitting there listening to God s words and receiving His Body and Blood, you are helping God serve his people. Every time I participate in the ministries I feel the warmth, love, & joy of giving and receiving the Ultimate Gift to and from God How have you been called by God? Have an answer?
