3 FATHER DON S REFLECTION LK 1:57-66, 80 All who heard these things took them to heart, saying, What then, will this child be? For surely the hand of the Lord was with him. The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the desert until the day of his manifestation to Israel. Today we celebrate the feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist. It is a feast that dates back to around the 4th century. The date is important, for it was six months before the birth of Jesus. Augustine found this date (near the summer solstice) appropriate because after the birth of John, days began to grow shorter, whereas after Jesus birth, days became longer. The Gospel takes us to the circumcision of John. Zachariah had not been able to speak since the angel Gabriel announced that his wife, Elizabeth, was going to have a baby. He doubted the possibility of her even being able to bring a child into the world, for she was thought to be barren. Zachariah was given his voice back when it came time to confirm that the child would be called, John. There were doubters when Elizabeth stated the child s name. No one in the family had the name John. But John was the name given to the child destined to be a messenger of God. It was clear that the hand of God was in the whole process and that great things would come of him. John s whole life was one of preparing for the mission that God had planned for him. As he grew in strength and was guided by the Holy Spirit, John would be the last prophet before the King of Glory came into the world. The hand of God was with John throughout his life. Both Elizabeth and her husband knew that their child was special and they had great hope for him. Isn t that the case with all parents as they present their children to God at Baptism? They look at their son or daughter and see God s hand in the child s life. Children are miracles. They are precious and a gift from God. The challenge that all guardians face is to make sure that these children are given all the love they need. At the waters of Baptism, they dedicate the child to God. Baptism is a time to show gratitude for the gift placed into the parents care. On the feast of the Nativity of John, we can recall the wonderful mystery of life. It is a time to reflect on how each of each of us have had the hand of God guiding us in our lives. We may not always see it as strongly as in the story of John, but God is in our midst. We must be open to what God has called us to do. As children of God, we are called to embrace the gospel. We are to discover what it is God has called us to be. We are called to be Christ for others. What took place at our baptisms entered us into the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. While that may have been a one-time event, we are called to say, I believe each and everyday of our lives. Surely the hand of God is with each of us. Have a great week! We need another Baptism Sacristan for the Saturday 5:00 p.m. Mass, which occurs just once a quarter. We also need another Baptism Sacristan to help at the 1:00 p.m. Sunday baptisms outside of Mass, serving about once a month. We will provide you with training, plus give you a chance to shadow a Baptism Sacristan serving at a baptism before you are placed in the schedule. If you end up with a schedule conflict, you can trade places with another Sacristan. Please pray about it. 5 CHILDREN S FAITH FORMATION Mary Montour - mmontour@stjohnwc.org , ext. 118 PSR News Studies have shown that children who are intentionally exposed to regular religious education from a young age, along with faith sharing in their homes and communities tend to remain connected and grounded in their faith. We are all called to lifelong faith formation! Registration for next year is open now for Elementary and Junior High, classroom study and home study. Give your children the gift of community and faith formation you will be glad you did! Classes will run from Sept. 9, 2018 through April 10, Visit our website for more information and to register. Early Childhood PSR Calling all children age 3 Kindergarten! Registration has begun for faith-filled fun and learning with caring adults on Sunday mornings during the 9:30 a.m. Mass, Sept. April. If your children have participated in St. John Early Childhood Program, you already know how much they enjoy coming each and every Sunday to learn about God s love for them and our world. Vacation Bible Camp VBC begins on Monday, June 25 through Friday, June 29, 9:00 a.m. noon, for children entering grades K 5. The theme is Shipwrecked Rescued by Jesus! West Chester catholic Young Adults Adoration & Applebee s July 5, 7-8 p.m. Join us for an hour of adoration and prayer (Holy Hour) at St. Max Church in the Chapel from 7-8 p.m. Afterwards we ll meet outside the chapel (door to the right, as you face the chapel altar) to drive to Applebee s at Union Center for some food & socializing 1st Thursday of each month. Campton Mission Please pray this week for our teen and adult volunteers who are heading to Campton Kentucky for our Campton Mission Trip. Please patronize these sponsors as a thank you for their kind generosity. 7 Knights of Columbus 2nd Annual Poker Friend Raiser June 30, 6 p.m in the Pavilion The St. John Knights of Columbus are holding their second annual poker night friend raiser on June 30 in the Pavilion. Come on out and enjoy the company of friends, play a little (cash-free) poker and spend some time dealing, if you are interested in learning for the St. John poker tent. Knights will be dealing Blackjack and Texas Hold em. No money will be involved but we do have free pizza, drinks, and snacks. Sign-ups are not necessary but you can at the website and click the link called, Pre-Poker Festival Sign-Up. If you have any questions, please contact Grand Knight, Patrick Leeper at Faith Community Dinner Aug. 7 Our Parish is again assisting with the Community Dinners that are served weekly at Faith United Methodist Church on Cox Road. The dinner is part of the Stepping Forward program that also provides job and life skill classes, activities for children and referrals to resources for needy families in our area. We are partnering with Faith Church to cook and serve the dinner on Tuesday, August 7. We will do this again in December. While we move through the class, there will be some guided meditation questions to help you reconnect with your own spirit and spend some time in prayer. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Youth Ministry How Confirmation has Brought Me Closer to Christ Samantha Harold One important and wonderful part of our faith is the relationship we each have with God. There are many times people want to strengthen their relationship with God and build it up. Sometimes, it s difficult to do that on our own and sometimes all we need is a little push. This push can be anything, but for me it was my calling from God about Confirmation. Confirmation has given me the opportunity to learn how to develop a closer relationship with Christ. From listening to the lessons from the Catechists to hearing stories of faith being tested from my sponsor, I have been able to grow in my faith and learn so much about it. I am so grateful for the Confirmation experience I was called to for all that it has taught me. I ve been reminded to always trust in God and have strength in the journey He has planned, and I ve also discovered ways to better my relationship with God each and every day while serving others and remembering to see God in everyone. Share-A-Lunch June 24, 9 a.m., Pavilion Thank you to all contributors of SAL in May!Please come join us on June 24 at 9 a.m.! We will be preparing about 300 peanut butter sandwiches and packing lunches. (Lunches are distributed at Reach Out Lakota and St. Francis- Cincinnati.) In addition to the peanut butter, bread, fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or cups), snacks, and juice boxes needed for the lunches, we welcome other non-perishable donations, too. The pantries are in particular need of healthy cereal, canned meat/ tuna, canned fruit, canned vegetables, shampoo, baby wipes, deodorant, and female sanitary items. (Since we do not have a refrigerator, please refrain from donating natural peanut butter or highly perishable fruit.)
