3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 13:44-52 Thus it will be at the end of the age. The angels will go out and separate the wicked from the righteous and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth. Do you understand all these things? They answered, Yes. The disciples stood before the Son of God as he told them a couple more parables about the kingdom. Jesus asked them if they understood. There was no pause, no I ll get back to you, or Could you explain it one more time? it was a Yes! without hesitation. The disciples did not have a great track record of understanding the parables. They asked, on more than one occasion, to have Jesus explain the stories a bit further. A couple of weeks ago, the sower and the seed story took some time to sink into their minds. Thank goodness for a patient Christ and an amazing Holy Spirit. So, we know where the apostles ended up; they are not wailing and gnashing their teeth in a fiery furnace. They were found worthy of the kingdom. They sacrificed everything for the kingdom and the angels gathered them into the heavenly kingdom. Now where are we headed? Are we willing to give up everything for the kingdom? When it is time to be gathered in, are we going to be sent to the fiery furnace or gathered into the kingdom, into the Father s house? There he is, Jesus himself, face to face with us, asking if we understand. Do you say yes without thinking? Is your faith strong enough to say yes and embrace the kingdom set before you? The treasure is placed before us, but it costs us something of ourselves. No, we don t earn the treasure, but we must realize the value and be willing to empty ourselves so we can be filled with God s unconditional love. We must be willing to share that love and that is where the cost comes into play. Just like Jesus, some will reject the goodness we are willing to share. There are many around us that just can t see beyond themselves and will always be takers, for they are only out for themselves. Their reward will be the wailing and gnashing of teeth in the fires of hell. Personally, I don t want to end up there. I doubt if there are many people who would. To me, these readings seem to reveal a sense of humility. It is a time to empty all the selfish notions that seem to take over in everyday life. The kingdom is right before us and we can t say we aren t aware of its presence. We should do what it takes to be able to embrace the treasure offered to us. The time is NOW and we should spare no resources to make it happen. Jesus is calling us by name. We are the Father s beloved. It is time to act like it. Make time for the kingdom before it is too late. Have a great week! New Server Robes We will be purchasing new robes for our altar attendants this summer. We will be asking parishioners to help us with the purchase of 28 new albs. For $100 you can purchase one of the new robes and it will be embroidered on the inside with an in honor of or in memory of. You simply tell us who you would like to dedicate the alb to (limited to 25 characters, not including the in honor of or in memory of ). For more information or to donate for an alb, please stop by or call the office during regular business hours through the week, and also be sure to make your check out to St. John Church and note on the envelope or check memo line Alb Donation. Thank you. Evening Hours Schedule Change Since July 10, we have had no evening hours at our Parish Office. Our weekday office hours are now Monday Thursday 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. and Friday 8:30 until noon. Please call if you have any questions about this change, and thank you for your patience! Children s Mass Books Is your child having trouble sitting and participating in the Mass? Or are you looking for books to help your youngest child to follow along with what is going on? St. John has a Lending Library in the Gathering Space with a basket of age appropriate picture books for children, Pre-K and older, to borrow and return after Mass. We also have a nursery available in the Gathering Space hallway where you can watch Mass live on our tv screens. Every child can have the opportunity to learn more about our Catholic faith, while sharing with friends in a safe and welcoming environment! National Catholic Youth Conference November High School students: Get ready for a week that will change your lives. The National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) registration is open and St. John youth ministry will be bringing a group to attend this amazing conference. NCYC takes place in Indianapolis, Indiana from November The conference contains engaging speakers, live music, games, and 25,000 other Catholic teens! Registration is open now through Sept. 15. WCCYA will be sponsoring a basket for the raffle, be sure to look for it! Theology on Tap Review August 16, 7-9 p.m. Did you miss a Theology on Tap night or want to talk more about a topic? Our August Wednesday faith discussion will be a recap of the four talks, followed by an open forum for discussion. We will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Max, room TBD. Reds Game September 17 at noon An annual favorite! This year s WCCYA Reds game is against NL Central rivals the Pittsburgh Pirates. Tickets are $25 each; money is due to Matt Polakowski by Aug. 6. 7 Fun New Games! We have several new games this year at our parish festival (August 4-5-6). Horse Races is spin the wheel game to see if your horse wins the race. We also have the traditional game of Skeeball. Potty Pitch is a game where kids throw a wiffle ball into the potty to win silly prizes. Don t worry, it s good clean fun! We also have a game called Win a Prize. It s similar to our Bars and Bells game, where you have a pull tab ticket to see if you win big. Check out all of our games this year. Exploring Membership in the Catholic Church The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) begins on Wednesday, September 20, from 7:00 9:00 p.m. Meetings are held in the Hospitality Room of our church. The RCIA is for people considering joining the Catholic Church, and for Catholics wishing to grow in their own faith. We also need Catholics to serve as Parish Companions and/or Initiation Sponsors to support the Candidates. Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you Does life sometimes just seem overwhelming? Sometimes things come along in our lives that can overwhelm us and suddenly begin weighing us down. We can find ourselves struggling day after day with simple activities and just not feeling like ourselves. Stephen Ministers help those who are going through tough times. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time or has a friend or loved one overwhelmed with something in their life, perhaps there is a need to talk to someone you can trust, who will really listen, and who will respect your deepest feelings Someone like a Stephen Minister. Contact Scott Steinke ( ext. 115) to find out more information about the Stephen Ministry at St. John Church. You do not need to face anything alone! Catholic Charities Mental Health Services We all have stress and challenges. We all can use a little help from time to time. Your mental health impacts your view of yourself and others, and it can be easy to lose our way. We are here to give you tools to assist you in finding ways to maintain a sense of well-being during those times of crisis. If you need the assistance of a mental health specialist to cope with life and various stressors, call Catholic Charities to schedule an appointment today. These groups have been called by name... 8 Serving with God at Mass Are you interested in becoming a Liturgical Minister at Mass? These are the ministries of Altar Attendant, Hospitality Minister, Extraordinary Minister, Sacristan, and Lector. This summer is the PERFECT time to start having you, and your entire family, get involved a little more at Mass. All of our current ministers will attest to the fact that it is a wonderful way to participate more fully in the Mass each weekend, and a great way to feel more connected to the parish. Now is the time to get in touch with me and find out more about how you can become part of this ministry! Training for any ministry will be at your convenience and takes just an hour of your time.
