3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION LK 14:1, 7-14 when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you. For you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous. It would have been great to have a photograph of all those invited to the dinner by the Pharisee. Jesus told us that it was a group that thought themselves to be pretty important. They all seemed to be fighting for seats of honor. Jesus looked at the Pharisee and challenged him about the guests he should have invited. Jesus is right about something; by inviting the people that Jesus suggested, there probably would not be a return invitation. What is Jesus asking us to do in this week s gospel? Should we start inviting strangers into our homes and feeding them? Should we only reach out to people who we know can t return the favor? Let me ask this: How do we feel when we encounter them on the streets, outside the stores, in our neighborhoods, sitting next to us on a Sunday liturgy? Do we even see them at all? Maybe you and I aren t much different than the people sitting down for a meal on the Sabbath hosted by the Pharisee. I don t think Jesus is telling us to go out and invite the poor, the lame and the blind to our Sunday night meal. But he is also challenging each of us to not ignore them as if they don t exist. I remember many years ago, after a visit to a hospital to anoint a parishioner, I stopped at the Wendy s in the hospital to get a cup of coffee. I had my clerics on so it was easy to see I was a priest. The line was long and I was just about to get out of line when a man towards the front noticed me. His clothes were well worn; he was a mess and needed a good shower, among other things. This man yelled back to me and says, Hey reverend, how about buying me a cheeseburger? I d like to say that I said yes, because it was the right thing to do, but instead I said yes because everyone was looking and I didn t feel I had a choice. I didn t do it out of charity. I did buy the man his burger and a cup of coffee and the security people met him at the door and removed him from the hospital. They told me he was not welcomed in the hospital to beg for food. I think about that person a lot and I try to have a better approach to people who may be down and out in their life. How do you view your neighbor? Is it possible to see Christ in others, even when they don t seem to fit into our world? When we come into church each week, do we take time to notice the people around us? Do we ever notice when they aren t there and wonder if they are all right? Who can we welcome to the table to break bread? Would it matter if they couldn t return the favor? Jesus is calling each of us by name to serve the kingdom. What is your answer? Have a great week! 7 Setting the Table of the Lord If you have ever set your table at home for a big family meal, then you already have an idea of what our Liturgical Ministers do every weekend for Mass. The Altar Attendants, Sacristans, Hospitality Minister Captains, Hospitality Ministers, Eucharistic Minister Captains, Eucharistic Ministers, and Lectors all play a big role in The Meal we share together. Many of our parishioners give their time and talents each and every weekend, and we are absolutely grateful for the wonderful gift they give. But, we fall very short on help for each Mass. We are definitely in need of Altar Attendants, Sacristans, Hospitality Ministers, and Eucharistic Ministers every weekend. We encourage you and your family to prayerfully consider being part of the Liturgical Ministry. Training is simple and takes little of your time. We would appreciate your consideration of participating in this ministry and would certainly love to have you! If you are interested, please contact Scott Steinke at , or him at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org. Thank you very much! There s still time to buy Silent Auction Gifts! We still have a few more gifts left for you! There is a summer fun basket that includes a 2017 summer membership to Hycrest Swim Club, tons of pool toys including dive rings and torpedos, multiple pairs of goggles, beach towels, and more! This gift has more than a $300 value, and we are selling it for $200! We also have $25 parking passes available for spots 1 (8 a.m. Mass), 2 (11:30 a.m. Mass), and 6 (8 a.m. Mass) in our Church parking lot. These parking passes give you a close parking spot for Mass for the entire year of 2016! If you would like these, please contact the church office ASAP at In addition, there are several gift cards! These include West Chester Orthodontics ($100) and Hyland Family Chiropractic ($50). To buy any these items, contact Aracelia Ayala at ayala04@aol.com or Judy Lenihan at lenihanj5555@gmail.com, or contact the church office. Hospitality Ministers: Giving a Warm Welcome Each Week Our Hospitality Ministers at St. John s give a warm welcome to those coming to the Table of the Lord. They make themselves present in the Gathering Space, give all a Good Morning! or Good Afternoon! that come through the doors, and hand them a Worship Aid for mass. It is a rather simple task, but makes a great difference for all who attend our parish to see St. John Church as a warm and welcoming community of faith-filled Christians. The hospitality ministers have many duties, but their main task is to be the first face that people see when they walk into church. We need your help! If you are someone who can shake a hand, give a Good Morning! or Good Evening!, and hand out a Worship Aid with a warm smile, then volunteering as a Hospitality Minister is for you! This is also a great opportunity for all members of the family to volunteer together and get the kids involved in a wonderful way. If you would like more information about how you can be a Hospitality Minister, please call Scott Steinke at ext. 115 or at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org. It would be great to see plenty of faces welcoming everyone as we worship together! 7 Volunteers needed for Family Promise To meet the growing need of giving shelter to the homeless, our parish would like to participate in the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) Shelter for Homeless people in West Chester. There are 14 churches in our area that take turns on a rotating basis, hosting families that are in need of a place to stay. The goal is to provide temporary shelter, affording the families the time they need to rebound and ultimately stand on their own again. Although St. John Church will not be hosting, we do hope to assist this ministry with volunteers. Volunteers are needed to cook, serve meals, play with children, help with homework, and some may even stay overnight. They interact with guests treating them with respect and responding with compassion. We are also looking for someone to serve as Coordinator to schedule the people needed for the ministry. If you would like to help in any of the ways listed, a 90 minute training seminar is first required. If you have questions, or would like to help contact Deacon Jerry Barney at jbarney@stjohnwc.org, or , x121. Download our parish app today! Stay connected with St. John. Set up prayer reminders. Listen to homilies. Scan the code or search your app store for myparish.

8 I Have Called You By Name... Our New Parish Theme! St. John the Evangelist has created this new theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. For the next few months, we will be highlighting groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Knights of Columbus We say Thank you! to our Knights of Columbus! The Knights have taken over the Poker booth at the festival, a booth that has struggled in the past few years. Of course, with the Knights at the helm, the poker booth was full and successful the entire festival weekend. The profitability of the booth was up and the overall income was up. This is just one example of how the Knights are amazingly active in our parish. The Knights participate in several charitable programs like Chip in for Charity, and they also are in charge of one of our most important Parish events, the annual Lenten Fish Fry! You will see Knights hard at work at just about every event in our parish. Their help is invaluable when it comes to moving furniture, setting up for events, and raising funds for St. John. If you are interested in becoming a part of this important ministry, please contact Pete Seibenick ( ), their Recruiting Coordinator. We are blessed to have them as our brothers in Christ! Bereavement Ministry If you ve ever lost a loved one, you know that those involved with Bereavement Ministry take their time and talents to make you feel appreciated, prayed for, and loved. Losing someone is a difficult thing to go through, but it s even more difficult when you feel alone; they are here to make sure you don t have to feel that way. The Bereavement Ministry meets with the family to plan the funeral Mass and makes all necessary arrangements, they take care of and coordinate all luncheons that are requested by the families of our parish, and they prepare our gathering space for visitations if requested by the families and/or the funeral home. If you are interested in knowing more about this ministry, or would like to know how you can become a volunteer and serve in some way, please contact Scott Steinke at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org or (513) ext Meal Ministry Our Meal Ministers are people who make meals for members of our parish and community who are going through a tough time and could use a few homemade meals. We thank them so much for how they fulfil their call from God. There is a simple online sign-up tool that our Meal Ministers utilize to choose when and for whom they cook. The online site also explains any special food needs and gives delivery instructions. If you are interested in helping with this ministry, please contact Joan at ext. 124 or jseibenick@ stjohnwc.org. More importantly, if you know of a local friend or family member who could use the assistance of our ministry, please send Joan a note or give her a call. Many of us know someone who may be experiencing a hardship; A warm meal delivered to the door is a personal and meaningful way to reach out to someone in need, and we thank them for this service.
