3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION JN 20:19-23 Peace be with you Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As the Father sent me, so I send you Receive the Holy Spirit. John s gospel speaks about giving the Spirit on Easter Sunday night. The power of the Risen Lord moved into the room, which was locked for fear the Jews would soon come and kill the apostles. No wonder Jesus offered peace to the group two separate times. Make no mistake about it; Jesus came to anoint them to do the mission he called them to do. Now that they had the peace of Christ in them, a peace the world would not understand, they were to bring compassion to those open to receiving it. Jesus is all about forgiveness. Fifty Days later, we hear of the powerful vision of Luke s story of the Pentecost. So powerful was the experience of the apostles that it moved thousands to come and see what happened. The town of Jerusalem was bustling because Jews from all over the world were in town to celebrate a festival of the Jews. It was called the feast of weeks, because it was celebrated seven weeks after the Passover. It was instituted to oblige the people to repair the temple of the Lord, to acknowledge his absolute dominion over the country, and to offer him the first fruits of their harvest. This festival also gave thanks to God for the law which he had given them at Sinai on the fiftieth day from their departure from Egypt. When the apostles received the Holy Spirit, they were given the courage to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ. They spoke one common voice. It was a miracle that so many native tongues could all hear the message, despite not speaking the language. It was the reversal of the story in Genesis at the building of the Tower of Babel. At the Tower of Babel, people assumed that if they built a tower high enough they could reach heaven and be with God. God saw how they were trying to take a short-cut to the kingdom and confused their languages so they no longer could communicate with each other. They all scattered to the four corners of the world, never to finish the tower. Now there is one Spirit, sent by the Father, promised by Jesus, to unify the world once again. Once again, God revealed his plan and it was up to the apostles to bring the message of Jesus to the rest of the world. We see here the birth of the Church. While it was nowhere near perfect, because humans are not perfect, the Spirit would continue to descend upon the church to keep the Gospel message alive and well. Where are we in this picture? Are we open to the Spirit? Has the Spirit found a home in our hearts? What fears are holding us back? You know, things are a lot easier when we remind ourselves who is in charge. When we are open to the Spirit and surrender to it in humility, things run more smoothly. The Spirit calls us, to remind us that we belong to the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Are you listening? The statue s artist is Timothy P. Schmalz and he is borrowing it at the moment so that he can recreate another one. Our temporary replacement sculpture is called Tranquility. Summer Kickoff June 4, 4-8 p.m. Let s kick off the summer and welcome our graduates in style! Come enjoy a cookout and the company of other young adults. Hamburgers, hot dogs, fixings and sides as well as sodas and dessert will be provided! We will have ladder golf, corn hole, and more. The party will be held in the picnic area behind the Pavilion at St. John the Evangelist, from 4-8 p.m. PLEASE NO ALCOHOL.

6 Congratulations Again to Our First Communicants! Donut Sale On Sunday, June 11, we will have a Donut Sale in the Gathering space after all Masses. The Donuts are sold for a nonprofit organization founded by a group of St. Xavier high school graduates. The project is bringing the advantages of solar power to the rural areas of Ethiopia, where power infrastructure is scarce. By providing power for wells, schoolhouses, and clinics, we hope to help lay the groundwork for further development by the communities. Throughout our history we have valued efficiency and impact. The bulk of our resources go to projects that don t just provide temporary relief, but that save lives and provide foundations on which to build better ones. Each donut is $1, with all proceeds going to Concordia Humana, the nonprofit organization that coordinates these efforts. Reach Out Lakota Supply Sunday On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of non-perishable food, or a toiletry item, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. Thank you for your 6 support of this community organization. Are You Celebrating a Significant Wedding Anniversary in 2017? Friends of Jesus Picnic June 10, 2017 from 12:30-4 p.m. FRIENDS OF JESUS is a group for adults with developmental disabilities (18 years of age or older). This group s focus is primarily for support, prayer and socializing. The parishes of All Saints, St. Columban, Good Shepherd, St. Margaret of York, St. Philip the Apostle and St. Vincent Ferrer would like to extend an invitation to our neighboring parishes who would like to join us. New members are always welcome but need to register first with Jane Callan prior to attending. Also, please RSVP to Jane at by Wednesday June 7, Our June picnic is on Saturday, June 10, 2017 from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m. at the Fehr s house in Madeira. The theme for this gathering is Trains and Tunes. Besides food, fellowship and cornhole, the Fehr s will show their model train set-up and lead everyone in song.

7 It s almost summertime, and that means it s almost time for the family festival! If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please visit our Parish website to take a look to see which spots you might want to help out with! As of right now, we need booth captains for Ping Pong, Tic-Tac-Toe, Pulled Pork and Fast Poker. Festival Committee Member Of the Week Brigid Loebig is in charge of the commissary area for all of our games at the festival. This is a big job and Brigid is constantly keeping inventory of supplies and prizes during the festival. She makes sure that all games stay stocked and that they don t run out of necessities. She works very closely with booth captains all weekend long. Brigid and her husband, Paul, have three adult daughters: Kimberly, Pamela and Emily. In addition to her festival duties, Brigid is an active member of our parish community. She serves on our Finance Committee and the Building and Grounds subcommittee. She was on the women s Christ Renews His Parish team 35 as well. Brigid is an accountant, and that is how we convinced her to serve on the Finance Committee! She also loves to hike, run and do anything active in the great outdoors with her daughters, son in laws and two grandsons. Thank you, Brigid for all that you do for our parish community! We also take cash donations! Thank you for all your help! 7 Campton Mission Trip June 21 June 25 Our Campton Mission is a mission trip for high school and college students. After the day camp, we do a variety of activities that allow our volunteers to experience the wonders and lifestyle of Eastern Kentucky! Campton Mission costs $25 to attend. Laffalot Summer Camp June Laffalot Summer Camp will once again be offered at Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School! This camp will take place the week of June from 9:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m, with aftercare available until 4:00. Laffalot is for boys and girls ages 6-12 years old who love to play games and have fun! Serving with God at Mass Are you interested in becoming a Liturgical Minister at Mass? These are the ministries of Altar Attendant, Hospitality Minister, Extraordinary Minister, Sacristan, and Lector. This summer is the PERFECT time to start having you, and your entire family, get involved a little more at Mass. All of our current ministers will contest to the fact that it is a wonderful way to participate more fully in the Mass each weekend, and a great way to feel more connected to the parish. Now is the time to get in touch with me and find out more about how you can become part of this ministry! Training for any ministry will be at your convenience and takes just an hour of your time. The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you The St. John s Stephen Ministry has trained Christian caregiving men and women who can listen with a warm heart and show God s love to those in our parish, and in our community, who are hurting. Through the help of a Stephen Minister, he or she brings the presence of a caring Christian friend to walk through and journey with us in those tough times. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the hurting, and the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to a Stephen Minister? Thank you to all parishioners who recently participated in Change a Life Baby Bottle Campaign. Your change will be judiciously directed to help us provide diapers, formula and other baby essentials to the women who most need our help. It will also be allocated to help Pregnancy Center East continue to provide free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, confidential information about life-affirming alternatives to abortion to women facing an unexpected pregnancy, as well as parenting classes to firsttime mothers. Companions on the Journey June 8 at 7 p.m. in the Hospitality Room Companions on the Journey is a place where you can express your grief and learn how to go through the grief process so that you can begin this new chapter of your life in a healthy way. We know it isn t easy, and that s why we offer this support group so that you can learn to heal, through God s grace and companionship with others. The Companions on a Journey grief support group meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room.
