3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 17:1-9 While he (Peter) was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud cast a shadow over them, then from the cloud came a voice that said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him. Jesus, James, John and Peter were on a mountain when the most amazing thing happened. Elijah, Moses and Jesus were transfigured before the three disciples. Where was Michelangelo when you needed him for a painting? Fear (and who wouldn t be afraid?) came over the three disciples. If that wasn t enough, a voice broke into Peter s speech and spoke to the disciples, revealing that Jesus was His Son and that pleased Him. Now as Jesus and his disciples descended the mountain, Jesus told them, Oh, by the way don t tell this to anyone until I rise from the dead. You have got to be kidding me really? How were the three disciples going to explain where they were and what they were doing? Talk about something that could divide the group. Let us be perfectly clear; this transfiguration is about the disciples feelings. It isn t about favorites or who has the inside information on the mission of Jesus. It is pretty clear that God and Jesus both knew what was going on and that the disciples had a huge learning curve before them. Not only would they have to digest what happened, but they would soon experience the whole death and resurrection of Jesus, the Son of God. The transfiguration is all about Jesus uniting the Law (Moses) and the whole of the prophets (Elijah) and bringing salvation to all. Unlike Peter, who wanted to hold onto the moment, Jesus knew that was impossible. It s as if we got a peek behind the curtain to see the end of the movie. However, it was only a taste. The disciples had to let go of the scene until everything was over. To me, this story is a reminder that we can t short-circuit the journey. Our faith life is a process; it is a life-long journey. God reveals his plan to us on a regular basis. We can t skip the journey to the cross. We may all want mountaintop experiences, and some of us might even have one, but they are never meant to last. The three disciples learned that the mission they were called to embrace would be very challenging. But if they listened to the words they heard on the mountain from the Father, Jesus would bring them safely home into the kingdom of heaven. The words that the Father spoke are words that we can hear in our own hearts from time to time. God is wellpleased with each of us when we are being Christ to one another. When we take the Eucharist and make it alive in our hearts and in our daily lives, we understand the journey that Jesus and the apostles first took. From Elijah and the prophets, Moses and the Israelites, to Jesus journey to the cross: His journey from the tomb to the glorious resurrection of God s master plan will be fulfilled. We are called by name, and we are totally in God s possession, his special children with whom he is well-pleased. Have a great week! 4 WELCOME PARISH THEME I Have Called You By Name From the Music Director: Wow, it has been a month since I started here already! I hope you like some of the music we have done so far. To answer some of your questions, yes, I play the organ, just haven t gotten to it yet. And, I hear your concerns about the Worship aid and I m learning! Now to some of my plans: I would like to start a group at the 5:00 Mass with contemporary instrumentation. We need a percussionist and some guitars and a bass, other instruments welcome as well as some singers. We will practice an hour before Mass so no weeknight rehearsals required. Let me know if you are interested in joining us! At the 11:30 Mass, I would love to have our High School students play and sing. Students 8th grade and up are welcome; they will practice an hour before Mass as well. With the great band and choral programs at our high schools, this should be a great group! Just show up at 10:30 in church to join. We will be asking parishioners to help us with the purchase of 28 new albs. For $100 you can purchase one of the new robes and it will be embroidered on the inside with an in honor of or in memory of. You simply tell us who you would like to dedicate the alb to (limited to 25 characters, not including the in honor of or in memory of ). Thank you. 4 The 9:30 choir and the Bell choir will continue as usual. 9:30 adult choir will rehearse on Wednesday nights and the bell choir will continue Tuesday nights. (If there is someone who has the experience and desire to lead the bell choir, let me know!) Rehearsals will begin the week after Labor day. The Children s choir will practice on Tuesday afternoons at 5:30. Kids third grade and up are invited. I hope to have a nice group this year! Rehearsals start September 6. Theology on Tap Review August 16, 7-9 p.m. Did you miss a Theology on Tap night or want to talk more about a topic? Our August Wednesday faith discussion will be a recap of the four talks, followed by an open forum for discussion. We will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Max, room TBD. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. The St. John Stephen Ministry: Caring for you Does life sometimes just seem overwhelming? Sometimes things come along in our lives that can overwhelm us and suddenly begin weighing us down. We can find ourselves struggling day after day with simple activities and just not feeling like ourselves. Stephen Ministers help those who are going through tough times. If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time or has a friend or loved one overwhelmed with something in their life, perhaps there is a need to talk to someone you can trust, who will really listen, and who will respect your deepest feelings Someone like a Stephen Minister. Contact Scott Steinke ( ext. 115) to find out more information about the Stephen Ministry at St. John Church. You do not need to face anything alone! Share a Lunch SAL will next meet at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 27 in the Pavilion. We will be preparing about 300 peanut butter sandwiches and packing lunches. (Lunches are distributed at Reach Out Lakota and St. Francis- Cincinnati.) In addition to the peanut butter, bread, fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or cups), snacks, and juice boxes needed for the lunches, we welcome other non-perishable donations, too. The pantries are in particular need of cereal/ oatmeal, flour, sugar, cooking oil, canned fruit, canned tomato sauce (no glass), and personal care items. (Please note that we do not have access to a refrigerator so please refrain from donating natural peanut butter or highly perishable fruit.) This summer is the PERFECT time to start having you, and your entire family, get involved a little more at Mass. All of our current ministers will attest to the fact that it is a wonderful way to participate more fully in the Mass each weekend, and a great way to feel more connected to the parish.
