3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 5:13-16 You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do you light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lamp stand where it gives light to all in the house. When we hear these words, what comes to mind? Do we really see ourselves as a light for the world? This is a gospel passage I m sure most of us have heard before, but I m not sure we always feel like he is speaking directly to us; Jesus surely had someone else in mind. Jesus, the teacher, gave instructions on what is demanded of us, his followers. Just because we have the copy of our baptism certificate doesn t make us active Christians. Belonging to the Church means much more than having our name written down in a record book. That is why Jesus calls those listening to his teaching and tells them that they are valuable in the kingdom. We are called to add flavor to the church. We are all unique and have many talents and gifts. But if we fail to use these gifts, they are like the image of salt in today s gospel; they lose their flavor and are useless. We become a part of the kingdom when we choose to use our gifts in a way that brings Jesus alive in our world. We are called to be a light for the world. From the moment of our baptism, we have been entrusted with the light of Christ. We were challenged to keep that light burning brightly. How do we do that? We have to find more ways to get involved in building the kingdom. It is time to stop saying that we re too busy or that there already seems to be enough people involved. We have to remind ourselves just how grateful we are for what God has given us. I believe we can rationalize just about anything, so we sometimes feel okay about not getting involved. Every time we find another reason for not doing something important, we cover up the lamp in the room. If our faith is not lived out in our daily lives, it will die and we will be empty and lost. We all matter. We are all needed to spread the Good News through our lives. The best way we can witness to the gospel is to live it. If all we do is show up for Sunday Mass, take communion and the bulletin and think we are good Catholics, you re wrong! Each one of us has been called by God to work in the vineyard. We can t have the attitude of just letting someone else do it, or that we don t have the time. There are so many ministries that go unfilled in our liturgies; why not volunteer to help out at Mass? Please don t let your light grow dark; let it shine for the world to see. We all have flavor to add to our community. It s about time to add it to the mix. I don t think the community, or you, will be disappointed. Have a great week!
