3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 10:46-52 Jesus said to him in reply, What do you want me to do for you? The blind man replied to him, Master, I want to see. Jesus told him, Go your way, your faith has saved you. Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way. Today we hear the story of Bartimaeus who cried out to Jesus to save him. The people around Jesus felt that Bartimaeus was unworthy of Jesus time. They tried to quiet him but he wouldn t be silenced. Jesus called him. Finally his voice was heard by the Master. Jesus sent him on his way which as the story ends, we learn his way is to follow Jesus. The blind man s sight was restored and he followed the one who brings salvation to all. In many respects, Bartimaeus had better eye sight than the people following Jesus. The blind man knew who Jesus was and this was his chance to see again. I think it is humorous that the crowd told the blind to take courage. It is clear by his determination that he had more than enough courage to stand before the Master. In the Gospel we hear of many callings, such as the first disciples along the seashore. Just a few weeks ago we heard Jesus call the rich man to sell all of his possessions, give the money to the poor, and then come follow him. Today we hear Jesus calling Bartimaeus to come to him and be made whole. Not only was his sight restored, but his faith was strengthened as he came before Jesus, the Son of David, the Son of God. You have to wonder what impact this miracle had on those who were following Jesus. Did they see that even a blind beggar on the road was someone special in the eyes of God? Jesus mission was not to a select group of people. Wherever Jesus went, all were called and given a chance to embrace the Good News. But alas there are many among us who need to have their hearing restored, even more who seem blind and fail to see Jesus among their brothers and sisters. There are some among us who lack courage to call out for help, but the worst is that there are some who would deny the voices crying out for the touch of Jesus. There are many who feel that they are unworthy to be heard by the Master. Many think that the Master has more important things to do than to deal with their problems. It is sad, but there are plenty of people who need the Lord and his healing touch and don t know how to reach out. We have a compassionate God and once we have taken the courage to approach him, then it is our responsibility to help others throw off their cloak and stand before the Master. It is not about whether or not we are worthy of his time, it is about his unconditional love for us. He is calling each of us into his loving arms. When we have experienced that love we are called to share to be Christ to one another. Have a great week! 7 All Souls Mass & Candle Service Monday, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. The All Souls Day Celebration is a particular day of remembrance set-aside in the Church year to remember those who have died. We would like to invite everyone to attend a 7 p.m. Mass on Monday, Nov. 2, in the Church to pray for your deceased loved ones. In a special way, we will remember members of our parish family who have died over the past year. We invite these families to be present and carry a candle in remembrance of your loved one to be placed in the sanctuary during the procession. We would also like to remember losses due to still birth, losses of a child at birth or shortly after, young children, and those relatives of parishioners who died over the past year but may not have been members of our parish community. A candle may certainly be placed for them as well. These same names can be listed in our parish Book of Life and in Our Book of the Innocents, which will both be carried in the processional of the liturgy. For this purpose, we invite you to enter the names of your deceased loved ones in the books. Pages of the Book of Life and Book of the Innocents will be on a table in the Gathering Space a couple of weeks before the Mass. If you have suffered the loss of a family member, child, or special friend this year and would like to take part in this liturgy and have a candle reserved for you to carry in the entrance procession, please call the office at no later than noon on Monday, Nov. 2 with the name of the loved one who has died.
