3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION LK 17:11-19 Jesus said in reply, Ten were cleaned, were they not? Where are the other nine? Has none but this foreigner returned to give thanks to God? Then he said to him, Stand up and go; your faith has saved you. Ten were cured of a horrible disease and only one, the Samaritan, fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him. I m sure there are some legalists looking at the story and thinking that the nine were just doing what they were told. After all, if they weren t pronounced clean by the priest, they could not enter into society again. All of that may be true, but it had to be an amazing feeling to be made clean and whole once again. A short return to Jesus and a big thank you would not have taken that much more time in the larger scheme of things. The only one to return in humble gratitude was the Samaritan. Jesus calls him a foreigner. But he also said that the foreigner s faith had saved him. That is a good thing to know when dealing with Jesus. So how is our relationship with Jesus? We might not be suffering from leprosy, but I am sure many of us have the ugliness of sin infecting our lives. How many of us would have the courage to yell out from a distance, Jesus, Master! Have pity on us! While our sins may not be visible, they do impact the way we respond to the community. No matter how private our sins are, they do influence how we interact with people in our lives. If we are too wrapped in selfish activities, then we begin to find ourselves further and further removed from the family, friends and even the strangers we encounter. We can easily box ourselves in by continuing to sin and shutting out the world, and even the God who loves us. It is God that can go anywhere, but we turn away from God out of shame; or worse, we don t even see that we have distanced ourselves. But God won t give up, and neither will those who love us. When we have drifted far enough, we will be entering a moment in our lives and we will recognize Jesus standing before us. It will shock us back into the moment, the moment we begin to come home. Jesus, have pity on me; heal me; free me from my sin. Wow - an awesome moment that is, when we reconnect with the one who gave unconditional love and who has never left our sides. Now, have we learned what the next step is, or are we like the nine in the story today? We have to fall to our knees like the Samaritan and thank the Lord for making us whole once again. No thing, no person, no sin(s) can keep us from a relationship with God. Jesus, by his death on the cross, guarantees that for us. We always have a way back to the Father. When we learn that, how can we not want to show gratitude for what he has done for us? Once we have felt that healing in our hearts, knowing that our faith in God has saved us, we have to share that joy. We are called by name to reach out to others who are on the fringe of the community and to bring them home. Whether they have put themselves out there or others have pushed them away, they are all the Body of Christ. In love and gratitude, we are to embrace the wounded by showing them the healing power of God. Have a great week! A Vigil Mass will be held at 7:00 p.m. on the eve of the holy day. Then a noon and 7:00 p.m. Mass will be offered on the holy day itself. There will be no 6:30 a.m. Mass on holy days. The only exception to that is Ash Wednesday, which will still be at 6:30 a.m. Some holy days of obligation coming up are the following with times for Masses listed: All Saints Day (Holy Day of Obligation) November 1, 2016: --- Vigil Mass on October 31 at 7 p.m. in the church --- Noon and 7 p.m. Mass in the church on November 1 Immaculate Conception (Holy Day of Obligation) December 8, 2016: --- Vigil Mass on December 7 at 7 p.m. in the church --- Noon and 7 p.m. Mass in the church on December 8. We will certainly have these times listed in the bulletin again as we get closer to the dates above and will also keep you posted on any additional dates and Mass times in the future.

7 Funeral Luncheon Coordinator Needed The Funeral Coordinator is the main contact for funeral lunches. Scott Steinke (or someone from Bereavement) would contact this person when a family requests to have a luncheon on campus following a Mass of Christian Burial. They would be notified as to the date and time of funeral, along with an approximate number of attendees for the luncheon. The coordinator is to then line up volunteers to serve at the lunch and to make calls to other volunteers to make the food. They also purchase items needed and will turn in their receipts to the church to get reimbursed. The coordinator works closely with the staff and bereavement ministry in helping families celebrate the life of a lost loved one. In addition, we need a few more people to help the coordinator make phone calls to the parishioners who make food for the luncheons. We are called to be one together and be there for our families in our parish. This is certainly a wonderful thing for us to offer to these families when we can. If you want to help, please contact Scott at or ssteinke@stjohnwc. org. Thank you! Girl s Volleyball It s time to sign up for volleyball if you haven t yet! Girls in grades 3-8 should sign up before October 14. Please visit our website s booster page for the registration form. For questions, please contact Wendi Bowen at wendi622@ hotmail.com. A Note from Your St. Vincent de Paul Society Please know that we are here for you when you need us! Contact us at ext Volunteers are always welcomed! And thank you to all for your continued support! We at St. Vincent de Paul are always grateful for your continued support through your generous donations and prayers. Companions on the Journey Thursday, Oct. 13, 7-8:30 p.m. The Companions on a Journey grief support group meets on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. Here you can express your grief and learn how to go through the grief process so that you can begin this new chapter of your life in a healthy way. Please contact Ron Meyer or Karen Marvich if you have any questions. 7 Bible Study Would you like to get more out of our Sunday liturgies? There is a group in our parish that meets every Monday morning to prepare in advance for our weekend celebration. How do they do this? They read, pray, and reflect together on the upcoming Scripture readings that will be proclaimed at all the Masses for the coming weekend. They also gain insights from a commentary to better understand what the Biblical authors intended to communicate. The weekly meetings are held every Monday in the Hospitality Room of our church from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. If you would like to join, please contact Bonnie Garay at garay_family@yahoo.com or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion When you walk up to receive communion at Mass, if it is not the priest you go to, do you realize that the person you receive from is someone you know or who probably sits right next to you in the pew? Being an extraordinary minister at Mass is a wonderful gift indeed. As lay people, we have the privilege to be able to distribute Holy Communion to our fellow parishioners to offer them the body and blood of Christ that nourishes our bodies and souls, as we become what we receive through Him. Becoming an extraordinary minister at Mass is something each of us should be open to discern in our lives. Imagine being able to distribute to your family, to those around you, and to those in the parish. What a blessing it is to be able to participate in this ministry, and the great thing about it too is that you are already at Mass, so why not give it some thought and listen to hear if God is calling you by name to be an extraordinary minister of holy communion. Contact Scott Steinke for more information and training. Office ext. 115 or ssteinke@ stjohnwc.org Pivotal Players Video Series Tuesdays in the Hospitality Room 8:30 to 10:30 a.m Bishop Barron is on a new journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church s most influential people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. Each segment is stand alone, which means you need not view the entire series to benefit from it. For the Oct.11 meeting, we will explore the life and teachings of GK Chesterton

8 I Have Called You By Name... Our New Parish Theme! St. John the Evangelist has created this theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. For the next few months, we will be highlighting groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Youth Ministry Volunteers The young people of our Parish are integral to how we all learn and grow together. Without the help we get from our youth ministry volunteers to teach, guide and have fun with the youth, our Parish would not be complete! We would like to thank ALL volunteers, young and old, who use their time and talents to put together every youth ministry and Parish event that encourages more young people to participate and learn through God s love. From those who help at our family festival each summer, Generations of Faith, Youth Nights, Trunk n Treat, and especially our mission trips to Campton, Kentucky: we appreciate your help more than you know! You have been called by name, and you answered! If you would like to be a part of this special ministry, please get in touch with our Youth Minister, Josh Plandowski at jplandowski@stjohnwc.org or call the Parish Office at ext Justice and Peace Commission World Youth Day Mass Volunteers Sun. Oct. 23, 9:30 a.m. Do you want to distribute Communion during the celebration of the Eucharist? Do you want to welcome people into Church? Spots are still available for children, teens and young adults to serve during our World Youth Day Mass. Some roles require some simple training; while others you just need a welcoming smile. Consider if you have been called by name to help celebrate the youth at this Mass. If you have any questions, please contact Scott Steinke at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org! 8 Our Justice and Peace Commission is a witness of Christ s love and teachings; the group meets once a month and promotes working for justice for all. The Justice and Peace Commission also provides education programs that promote Catholic Social Teaching. They sponsor or support the following ministries: Archdiocesan Anti-Racism Task Force in cooperation with Church of the Resurrection (Bond Hill), Green Committee, Little Free Libraries, Stepping Forward (UMC soup kitchen), and Chosen Soup Kitchen. Chosen provides a 52 bed shelter and meals to approximately 750 needy people annually, with a cost that is half the price of the national average for emergency shelters due to the large volunteer network through area churches. The volunteers involved with Justice and Peace have answered their call to make their world a better, more Christdriven place. We thank them for everything they do. If you would like more information or to be involved, please contact Jerry Barney at jbarney@stjohnwc.org.
