3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 6:7-13 Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two So they went off and preached repentance. The Twelve drove out many demons, and they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them. In a way it was graduation time for the Twelve. They had been taught, by word and example, what it means to be a follower of Jesus. They were now called to go out and give the message of the kingdom. It is interesting that the first thing that the Twelve did was preach repentance. The same message that John the Baptist offered to the people is now being presented by Jesus disciples. Jesus gave them the power to bring people to a true sense of wholeness. They were sent out to remove obstacles that would get in the way of having a right relationship with God. They were true itinerant disciples of Jesus, and they were to take nothing with them but a walking stick. Perhaps the walking stick was to defend them from wild animals they would meet on the way. They were to be totally dependent on the hospitality of the homes they entered. They were not to force themselves on anyone; if someone would not listen, the disciples were told to leave, shake the dust off of their feet, and move on to the next place. What trust they must have had in Jesus to say yes to his calling. They traveled into strange places armed with only the message of Jesus. For the Twelve it was enough. We hear that they were successful and brought healing to those who had the faith to respond to their healing touch. How would we respond to the Twelve coming to our neighborhood? Would we welcome them into our homes? Would we listen when they spoke to us about repentance? Is there something in our lives right now that we need to repent? Is there something that needs healing? What demons lurk about in our lives that we need to expel from us? Some might be reading this and say, Surely you are not talking about me? From time to time, we might tune out during a reading because we have heard it before. Maybe we think the homily is meant for someone else, or we simply have too much on our minds and we zone out. Some days we might be going to receive the Eucharist because it is part of the routine. It can be easy to put up road blocks to our relationship with Jesus. We have to make the effort to let him into our lives and welcome him into our homes. Once we have allowed him into our lives, we can be healed and made whole again. Then, like the Twelve, we will be called to do the mission work for the kingdom of God. Once we have experienced the unconditional love of God and have felt his forgiveness, then we can share the great feeling with others. When we are alive with the Lord, then we can truly be Christ to one another. What an awesome God we have, and because he gave us his Son for our salvation we have a chance to be one with them. What can be better than that? Have a great week! 5 Children s Faith Formation Anna Peloquin apeloquin@stjohnwc.org Top Six Reasons to be a Catechist I m hesitant to become a catechist because I don t know if I ll be able to answer kids questions. Our textbooks, Finding God and Faith Fusion (Jr. High) are easy to use and the answers to most questions you will be asked will come from the text. However, sometimes, kids come up with excellent questions that are not all that easy to answer. This is a way that helps them to grow and make connections with the world around them. There is absolutely nothing wrong with saying, I don t know, but I ll find out and tell you next time we meet. Then, after class, you can just walk down to the Religious Ed Office and ask us for the answer. The #3 reason to be a Catechist is You will grow in your own faith, learn the teachings of the Church, and deepen your relationship with Jesus. Children have an amazing ability to teach us about wonder and to remember the heart of the message that Jesus preaches. As Jesus said, Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. (Mark 10:14) If you are interested volunteering with our PSR classes please contact Anna Peloquin at apeloquin@stjohnwc.org or All questions adapted from: Parish School of Religion Early Bird deadline is July 30! Liturgy of the Word with Children - Assistants/Aides Wanted 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. Mass - Help Once a Month or Every Other Month! Liturgy of the Word with Children is a wonderful way to have the young children of the parish (grades 1, 2, and 3) hear God s word in an understandable and relatable way while also having fun. Our current leaders do an excellent job, but it can be a little tough when there is only one leader for Mass. Keeping an eye on children going to the restroom and also listening for the time to send the kids back to the main church are difficult tasks to manage while also leading. These tasks interrupt the time the leaders have to give the Word of God and also take their attention away from the children in this ministry. We would love to have an aide/assistant to help the leaders with those kinds of tasks during the dismissals. As an aide/assistant, you wouldn t have to lead or prepare anything, you would just have to be there for the leader and help in any way you can. This is something you would only have to do once a month or even once every other month during the 9:30 or 11:30 Mass. This can also be anyone 16 year of age or older, and for those young adults looking for service hours, this is a perfect way to complete them. If you are interested in becoming an aide/assistant, please contact Scott Steinke at the Parish Offices ( ) or at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org for more information on this ministry. 8
