Holy Spirit Mission Statement We, the Family of Faith at Holy Spirit, proclaim that by our Baptism we share in Christ s mission as Priest, Prophet and King. We recognize our responsibility to give worship to God, reverence to all people, respect to all creation and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Acknowledging our own brokenness and our need to hope, we seek to be a forgiving and welcoming community committed to service by the sharing of life and love with all, and working together to make peace and justice a reality in our world. Strengthened by the presence of God in our lives, we undertake all of this through Our Lord Jesus Christ, Amen. Alleluia

2 Holy Spirit Catholic Church March 11, 2018 From The Pastor s Desk Sometimes we find ourselves caught in some dilemma we know we have to do something about it, but we keep putting it off. We think that we can always wait another day or another week before we have to make a decision about what to do in a particular situation. Yet, we know that we are living in an illusion. Life goes on. Sometimes our refusal to decide just makes the decision harder in the future. Sometimes it causes more distress to ourselves or others than there really has to be. Today we are reminded that the very presence of Jesus in the world is a judgement in the sense that it provokes people to judge themselves by deciding either for Jesus or against him. Jesus brings out what a person really is and the real nature of their life. Jesus is a penetrating light that provokes judgment by making it apparent what a human person is. In the Gospel we are told: And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. Are there some things in our lives that we would rather keep hidden, that is, in the dark? I don t mean past mistakes that we now regret we don t have to drag those out again. But are there parts of our present life that we want to keep out of everyone s sight because we know they are not right? Do we prefer to live part of our lives in darkness? If so, then Jesus is calling us out of that darkness. He doesn t want us to continue to live a disturbing kind of life one that is restless and empty of the peace he promises. Jesus Christ doesn t want to condemn us - he wants to save us - he wants to save you. In your own heart, make a decision to put away any darkness that you may have created. Tell the Lord that you will walk out into his light. While Jesus provokes us he also promises us eternal life that is starting now, everyone who believes in him might have eternal life. This eternal life that St. John talks about is one that begins in this life. Commentators on this Gospel talk about the yet and the not yet in this Gospel. This is particularly difficult to think about because when we think about eternal life, we think about unending bliss no hassles, no problems, no money worries or job worries no relationship problems. But for St. John, eternal life is not something that we have to wait for until this age ceases, but can be, and indeed is, the gift of God within the present temporal order. Hence the present tense is used in the next verse, and often afterwards in the Gospel. We can actually begin to experience eternal life now when we take our relationship with Christ, as seriously as we take any important relationship in our lives. Our life is changed because of our relationship with someone we love: And so with Jesus Christ. We can t claim to love him and then forget about him. Our love of Christ will change us. It will give us new meaning new energy for this life. And it will enable us to begin our eternal life now and bring us to life even after our death.
