3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION LK 21:5-19 Remember, you are not to prepare your defense beforehand, for I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking that all your adversaries will be powerless to resist or refute. You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives. The church year will end next weekend with the feast of Christ the King. So, today, we heard Jesus telling the people that things were going to be challenging for those who believed. Some would die for their faith, the temple would be destroyed, and the people they were closest to could be the very ones to turn them over to the authorities. The first people who heard the gospel of Luke knew this was already true. By the time the gospel was written, the temple had already been destroyed and many lost their lives for their belief in Jesus. But Jesus was very clear that those who believed would not have to make the journey alone. They surrendered to the wisdom of Jesus and allowed him to give them the words to speak to the authorities. Jesus asked all those who accepted him as Lord and Savior to trust him. It sounds so simple and the reward that Jesus spoke about seemed well worth the risk. But in the moment of persecution, just how strong is our faith and our trust in Jesus? It s heartbreaking to realize that some of the people we trust the most turn their backs on us and walk away. Jesus says that even family members will turn against one another. They will desert the ones they should support the most. Being a follower of Jesus can cost us. While most of us will not have to suffer for our faith, we will often find people who won t accept us for our beliefs. I have seen many families and extended families that have huge divides because of this; they have little or no hope of ever reconciling with one another. Sometimes they can t even tell you how the whole thing started or why the situation continues - and that hurts deeply. In my ministry, I have experienced many times when I have been the cause of a conflict. Sometimes, there were ways to open the door for reconciling and others times, the hurt was just too deep and too hard to let go of. That saddens me because it means I have failed in my ministry. There are other times when I feel wounded because someone has made it their mission to be critical of my ministry. At times, they can be spiteful with their cruel statements. But, in all things, it comes back to trusting that Jesus will heal and teach me how to be a more compassionate minister. We never make this journey alone. Jesus has promised us that he will make the journey with us. Can we be humble enough to allow Jesus to support us and protect us when others try to destroy us for our beliefs? As we come to the end of this church year, can we be brave enough to stand strong with others as we are called by name to live the gospel message? I pray we can all answer that call, a call that leads to salvation. Have a good week! Turkey Ministry Once again we are going to help provide the turkey and gravy for holiday dinners at Our Daily Bread. Helping with the holiday dinners has been a service of our parish for about 20 years. Please consider joining this year with us by choosing from these four alternatives: 1) Cook the turkey and cut all the meat off of the bones. Wrap the white and dark meat together and freeze. Save all drippings. Strain and freeze, place in a throwaway container. You can make your own gravy, or someone else will make the gravy 2) Buy a turkey and let someone else cook it for you 3) Volunteer to cook a donated turkey 4) Donate a check, made payable to St. John the Evangelist Church, which will be used to purchase a turkey. Reminder letters are being sent to those of you who participated in this ministry in prior years. But we also are in need of new volunteers to help provide for this worthwhile cause. If you have any further questions, call the Parish Office at , or at mball@stjohnwc. org. Thank you for your help! They have trained 380 youth through leadership and healthy life skills classes. And, they have improved low-income neighborhoods by eradicating vacant properties, increasing public services, and reducing crime. These efforts are taking place in Cincinnati, Dayton, Hamilton, Springfield, St. Marys, Brown County and elsewhere across the Archdiocese. As Archbishop Dennis Schnurr recognizes, Through CCHD, we show mercy, not by providing a handout, but by providing a life-changing hand up. 8 I Have Called You By Name... Our New Parish Theme! St. John the Evangelist has created this theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. For the next few months, we will be highlighting groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... Athletic Boosters Our Parish offers several recreational athletic leagues for kids and adults, organized by the Athletic boosters. Recently, we have been in need of volunteers to coordinate certain leagues within this important organization. St. John has volleyball teams for both boys and girls, adult recreational basketball, and until recently, we also had a K-2 instructional basketball league. Please support this organization by encouraging your children to sign up and by considering the call of coaching or coordinating a team. Participation in sports through the Church is a great way to stay healthy, involved, and to respond to your call to help others! Please consider being a part of this athletic organization in the 2017 year, and cheer on your St. John athletes! If you have any questions about volunteering or joining, please visit St. Vincent de Paul Society This society is the largest lay association of charity in the Roman Catholic Church serving those in need by person-to-person contact. This is accomplished through home visits made by parishioners who belong to the conference. We contribute as we are able to anyone within our parish boundaries. Membership in the conference offers opportunities for spiritual growth, friendship and service. Vincentians help the truly needy, those who are struggling to pay rent or utilities, or to put food on their table. You can donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society using your contribution envelopes as marked. You can also donate online. Thank you for your generosity! Please know that we are here for you when you need us! Contact us at ext Volunteers are always welcomed! We at St. Vincent de Paul are always grateful for your continued support through your generous donations and prayers. 8 What is CRHP? Testimonials from the Continuation Committee By Michelle Deutsch There was no way I was going to go to Christ Renews His Parish despite my husband having attended and encouraging me I was pretty sure it was a Jesus boot camp and not for me. Strategically plotting exits proved successful in dodging the sign up tables for many years. But one day, while sitting in mass with our 3 young children, I realized that although we attended mass every week as a family, some people seemed so engaged and really there and I felt like I was just showing up. I wanted our children to grow up with a mom who could really demonstrate and share what a relationship with God looks like. I wasn t sure how to get where so many other people seemed to be. That fall, when the upcoming CRHP weekend was announced I truly felt called to attend. CRHP was an opportunity and a path for me to grow my relationship with God and learn how to develop it. CRHP shaped me and changed the way I view so many things. It brings me joy to have watched my children blossom into young adults who can demonstrate and talk about their faith. For me, CRHP was a game-changer and I believe anyone who attends will truly find meaning in it, no matter where they are in their own faith journey.
