3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION LK 16:19-31 He said, Oh no, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent. Then Abraham said, If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone should rise from the dead. The story about the rich man and Lazarus found the rich man learning that his selfishness cost him a life of torment. Knowing his fate, he wanted to warn his brothers to get their act together. But Abraham told the rich man that they must make that choice for themselves. One who was blind all of his earthly life now had his eyes wide open. I often wonder the difference it would make in someone s life if they had an experience where they came back from the dead. It seemed to work in the story of the Christmas Carol. Scrooge was a changed man after his encounters from his three ghosts. But that was a story of make-believe. The time to change our lives isn t after it is over. We are offered over and over again opportunities to change our lives to better reflect the Gospel message. How many Lazarus-type people have we ignored in our lives? How aware are we of the people around us? How many times in the last week did we have a chance to see Jesus in another person, but we were too darn busy? Last week the gospel said that we can only serve one Master. If that is true (which by the way - it is) are we clear on who is in the center of our lives? Jesus makes it very clear that the rich man had to almost trip over Lazarus as he entered his house. Where was the compassion to reach out to another human being? Are we that blind or self-absorbed as well? If God is not at the center, is it any wonder why we fail to see Christ in others? From our Baptism, God called us by name to be his children. As a member of his family, we are called to be present to others who need our help. We possess all the tools to be good and faithful servants, yet we spend time looking for just one more sign. What if someone from the dead came and warned us, would that make a difference? Well, we do have the risen Christ who is among us. It is when we truly discover how much God has given that we begin to want and need to share with others. It is what any good family member would do. The rich man lost sight of those around him. It is a warning to us all. The face of God is all around us and we have to do a better job of seeing him among us all. Jesus has shown us the Father s love; now we must share that love with others. Have a great week! 7 Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion When you walk up to receive communion at Mass, if it is not the priest you go to, do you realize that the person you receive from is someone you know or who probably sits right next to you in the pew? Being an extraordinary minister at Mass is a wonderful gift indeed. As lay people, we have the privilege to be able to distribute Holy Communion to our fellow parishioners to offer them the body and blood of Christ that nourishes our bodies and souls, as we become what we receive through Him. Becoming an extraordinary minister at Mass is something each of us should be open to discern in our lives. Imagine being able to distribute to your family, to those around you, and to those in the parish. What a blessing it is to be able to participate in this ministry, and the great thing about it too is that you are already at Mass, so why not give it some thought and listen to hear if God is calling you by name to be an extraordinary minister of holy communion. Contact Scott Steinke for more information and training. Office ext. 115 or ssteinke@ stjohnwc.org Pivotal Players Video Series Tuesdays in the Hospitality Room 8:30 to 10:30 a.m Bishop Barron is on a new journey to unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church s most influential people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal Players is a multi-part film series that illumines a handful of saints, artists, mystics, and scholars who not only shaped the life of the Church but changed the course of civilization. Each segment is stand alone, which means you need not view the entire series to benefit from it. No Electronic Recycling hosted here this fall For several years, we have hosted a spring and fall Electronics Recycling program. For the foreseeable future, we can no longer offer this option. Due to market forces, what used to result in a modest profit for our Scouts or Youth Group volunteers, the service has now become costly. Therefore, our parish can no longer continue to be a host site. However, the Butler County Recycling Center in the nearby city of Monroe will accept your items in need of recycling. This service is offered on Thursdays, from July 14 through October, Hours: 2-7 p.m. Go to their website for further information: A Note from Your St. Vincent de Paul Society Please know that we are here for you when you need us! Contact us at ext Volunteers are always welcomed! And thank you to all for your continued support! We at St. Vincent de Paul are always grateful for your continued support through your generous donations and prayers. Reach Out Lakota Supply Sunday On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of non-perishable food, or a toiletry item, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Christian Morality from a Theology of the Body Perspective This course is the standard Archdiocesan Catechist Certification Module in Christian Morality created in light of the teaching of St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body. 8 I Have Called You By Name... Our New Parish Theme! St. John the Evangelist has created this theme in an effort to highlight that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. For the next few months, we will be highlighting groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... PSR Volunteers The children of our parish always have questions about our Catholic faith and have a desire to know God better. One of the reasons for this desire, is because they have wonderful volunteers that instill in them a love of scripture, prayer, service, and the importance of God s love in our lives. Early Childhood and PSR has just begun for the school year, so when you drop off your kids, be sure to thank all of the adult and teen volunteers that bring the Gospel message to life! If you are interested in becoming a part of this ministry, please contact Anna Peloquin at apeloquin@stjohnwc.org or call , ext Stephen Ministry The St. John s Stephen Ministry has trained Christian care-giving men and women who can listen with a warm heart and show God s love to those in our parish, and in our community, who are hurting. This ministry is always here for you to be there for someone in need. Often times, hardships are more than what we can handle on our own. Through the help of a Stephen Minister, he or she brings the presence of a caring Christian friend to walk through and journey with us in those tough times. Stephen Ministers share the warmth of God s love with those who need it most: the lonely, the depressed, the hurting, and the grieving. Is God calling you to reach out to a Stephen Minister? Or is He calling you to reach out for someone you know? Now is the time to get the help you need to find healing and peace. Call Scott Steinke at the Parish Office at (513) ext. 115 to find out more about how a Stephen Minister can be there for you. 8 Mailings Ministry Whenever we have a publication to be sent out to the parish, our wonderfully dedicated and loyal mailing group comes to the Parish Offices to help sort, stamp and prepare them to be sent out. These helpers are so valuable for getting important information out to the entire Parish. They help prepare our bimonthly newsletter, On Eagle s Wings, as well as our annual Adult Faith Formation booklet, our festival mailing and other miscellaneous publications. We are so thankful that they help with this ministry! The Art and Environment Committee Looking for New Members Have you ever really looked around the Gathering Space and inside the main body of the church and seen all of the wonderful decorations and colors displayed for each season during the year? Have you ever thought to yourself, I would love to be part of that! God might be calling you to join the Art and Environment Committee. The committee is currently looking for new people, along with your ideas as well, in helping prepare the worship space for each new Liturgical season. God may be calling you by name, so please consider this call to serve; it may be just where you belong. If you are interested, please contact Mary Bourgraf ( ) or Carol Koester ( ).
