3 Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 8:27-35 And he asked them, But who do you say that I am? Peter said you are the Christ. Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him. Peter says the magic words when Jesus poses the big question, but it is clear that Peter has no idea what his response means. Peter does not see the whole picture. He believes his job is to protect Jesus to keep him from harm because the Christ should not have to endure this. Jesus speaks harshly to Peter because he is not thinking as God does but as human beings do. Peter goes from a hero to a goat in a few verses. No wonder Jesus told them not to tell anyone. If his own disciples weren t ready to understand, and they knew Jesus, how would others come to understand? Jesus begins to instruct the crowds about what it will take to be a true disciple of Jesus: Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it. I wonder if this message will change their view of being a follower of Jesus. Now that they know discipleship will cost them something of their own personal lives, are they ready to invest in Jesus and the Gospel? When Jesus turns to us and asks the question: But who do you say I am? are we ready to truly answer him with our own lives? It is easy to say that Jesus is the Christ; he is our Lord and savior. That is lip service it costs us nothing to make that statement. When we hear what Jesus says the Son of Man must do suffer and die and we are called to follow, then we have to move lip service into action. We are called to be active in following Jesus and actively embrace the Gospel. Discipleship costs each of us something; we can t simply show up with our membership card and expect to find salvation. Jesus suffered and died so that we might live. He made his journey to the cross to show us the way to salvation. It was a painful journey, but Jesus did not take any short cuts; he embraced his life fully. Jesus calls us to make the same journey. We are called to die to our selfishness the same selfless love Jesus shows in the Gospel. A life of being self-centered will destroy us in the end. God shows us his love and compassion so that we might experience it in our own lives and then we are called to share it with others we encounter in our lives. We are called to be Christ to one another. So when Jesus looks to you and asks you, who do you say I am?, how will you respond? Are you ready to say that he is the Christ? Can you be Christ for others? Now is the time to put away selfish ways and embrace Jesus way of life. When we lose our lives for Jesus sake, we can have a life that will never end. Have a great week! 8 Be Christ To One Another! Liturgy of the Word with Children Assistants/Aides Wanted - 9:30 & 11:30 Mass - Once a Month or Every Other Month! Liturgy of the Word with Children is a wonderful way to have the young children of the parish (grades 1, 2, and 3) hear God s word in an understandable and relatable way while also having fun. Our current leaders do an excellent job, but it can be a little tough when there is only one leader for Mass. Keeping an eye on children going to the restroom and also listening for the time to send the kids back to the main church are difficult tasks to manage while also leading. These tasks interrupt the time the leaders have to give the Word of God and also take their attention away from the children in this ministry. We would love to have an aide/assistant to help the leaders with those kinds of tasks during the dismissals. As an aide/ assistant, you wouldn t have to lead or prepare anything, you would just have to be there for the leader and help in any way you can. This is something you would only have to do once a month or even once every other month during the 9:30 or 11:30 Mass. This can also be anyone 16 years of age or older, and for those young adults looking for service hours, this is a perfect way to complete them. If you are interested in becoming an aide/assistant, please contact Scott Steinke at the Parish Offices ( ) or at ssteinke@stjohnwc.org for more information on this ministry. Fair Trade Coffee Sales September 19/20 Fair Trade Coffee, Tea, and Chocolate Sales will be held after all Masses in the Gathering Space the weekend of September 19 & 20. Purchasing Fair Trade coffee, tea, and chocolate assures fair wages for third world farmers providing these products. For more information, please contact Gary Eiser at gary_eiser@ yahoo.com or Matt & Elizabeth Waits at mewaits@ fuse.net. Thank you for choosing Fair Trade. Foster Grandparent Program The Foster Grandparent Program of Catholic Charities, SWO has volunteer opportunities available for individuals interested in nurturing, mentoring and tutoring disadvantaged youth. Volunteers currently serve in early childhood education centers and grades k-6. In addition to making a difference in the life of a child, the Foster Grandparent Program enables volunteers to remain physically and mentally active through continued participation in needed community services. Additional benefits to the volunteer include: 40 hours of paid orientation, a stipend of $2.65/hour, transportation reimbursement, paid leave time, insurance, paid In-Service training each month. For more information on how you can become a volunteer with the Foster Grandparent Program, please contact Celeste Walker at Share-A-Lunch Sunday, September 27, 9 a.m. Thank you to all contributors and volunteers of SAL in August. SAL will meet next at 9 a.m. on Sunday, September 27, in the Pavilion. Please come join us! We will be preparing about 300 peanut butter sandwiches and packing lunches. (Lunches are distributed at Reach Out Lakota and St. Francis - Cincinnati.) In addition to the peanut butter, bread, fruit (apples, oranges, bananas, or cups), snacks, and juice boxes needed for the lunches, we welcome other nonperishable donations, too. These items could be cereal, pasta & sauce, flour, sugar, canned meat & fruit, baby food, and other non-perishables for the pantries. We welcome brown grocery bags for packaging food, too. (Please note that we do not have access to a refrigerator so please refrain from donating natural peanut butter or highly perishable fruit.) Donations can be dropped off during our meeting time or in advance at the parish office. Thanks again for your support! Please contact Diane Claytor at with questions. Reach Out Lakota Supply Sunday On the first Sunday of the month, each St. John family is asked to bring an item of nonperishable food, or a toiletry, cleaning or paper product to the Gathering Space before Mass. Place items in the basket with the sign Reach Out Lakota Supplies. These donations are given to Reach Out Lakota. Thank you for your support of this community organization. 8
