3 FATHER DON S GOSPEL REFLECTION MT 25:1-13 Then the door was locked. Afterwards the other virgins came and said, Lord, Lord, open the door for us! But he said in reply, Amen, I say to you, I do not know you. Therefore, stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour. There are a lot of things I would not like to hear someone say to me. However, I am not sure I could ever recover from Jesus saying, I do not know you. How disheartening it would be to hear those words; they would feel like a knife to the heart. But those words were heard in the parable today. The five foolish virgins were not ready. They had a chance to be prepared and they chose to do nothing about the bridegroom s delay that evening. We might challenge that harshness of the bridegroom. Couldn t he have had a compassionate heart and let them in? Why did the guy need ten virgins with lamps anyway? Wouldn t five have been enough? Couldn t the five foolish virgins have paired up with the wise? It seems to me that there could have been a kinder, more gentle response to the story for a happier ending. This story is about being prepared; not occasionally prepared, but always. While we can turn to Jesus for grace, it is still up to us to be prepared. We are not given the day or the hour when that time will come. We must actively live in a Kingdom presence. Kingdom presence means that we must have enough oil to keep our flames alive when the bridegroom comes. We must continue to find ways to be Christ for others, to be grateful stewards. The kingdom is not something that will come. It is already here and we need to be active in the kingdom. While we don t experience the fullness of the kingdom, it is still before us and all around us. When the king comes there will be little warning. The true light will be before us and will call us to the judgment day. Now the question is, will we join the banquet or will we be left outside knocking on the door that may not open for us? Will Jesus say those haunting words to us, that he doesn t know us? Nap time is over! It is time to wake up and get in gear. No more slacking off; for our time may be shorter than we think. We are all in this together and we can pray for one another. However, when it is our time, it will just be you before the Almighty. While the Father is a God of mercy and compassion, He still wants to see how we have used our gifts. What have we done with our time on earth? Have we used our time, talents and treasures wisely? Have we been good stewards, or have we been selfish? Have we been the foolish or the wise? If we have been the foolish, it is a time for change. What better time for change than now, as we are quickly approaching the Advent season. Advent is a time for preparing for the coming of the Lord. Make time for God in your daily lives; it is never too late. Have a great week! Readings for This Week: Nov Monday Wis 1: 1-7; Ps 139; Lk 17: 1-6 Tuesday Wis 2: 23-3:9; Ps 34, 16-19; Lk 17: 7-10 Wednesday Wis 6: 1-11; Ps 82; Lk 17: Thursday Wis 7: 22b-8:1; Ps 119; Lk 17: Friday Wis 13: 1-9; Ps 19; Lk 17: Daily readings can be accessed online from our parish Web site, You can also access them from our parish app! 3

6 Turkey Ministry The holidays are fast approaching! Now s the time to begin planning for providing turkeys and gravy for the hungry and poor of the innercity. With your help, we will provide for the holiday dinners at both Thanksgiving and Christmas at Our Daily Bread (located in Cincinnati at Race & Elder Streets, near Findlay Market). If you intend to cook a turkey, please use the following instructions: Cook turkey; cut all meat off the bone. Wrap white and dark meat together and freeze. Save ALL drippings. STRAIN and freeze in a throw-away container. The gravy makers ask that you DO NOT use plastic bags for the juice (they leak). Use hard plastic containers such as Cool Whip tubs. It is a really big help for our ministry if you can make your own gravy. Please mark the containers appropriately GRAVY or JUICE..Please drop off your cooked and frozen turkey and juice, or donated frozen turkey, as below. Please include your name, address, telephone number, and the date, so we can keep the records current. The dates for cooking and/or delivering the turkeys are as follows: Thanksgiving Bake and deliver to the St. John Parish Office during normal business hours before Tuesday, Nov. 21, Christmas Bake and deliver to the St. John Parish Office during normal business hours before Thursday, Dec. 21, No uncooked turkeys accepted after Dec. 10! If you wish to donate money, please put your check or cash donation in the Sunday church collection, or drop it off at the Parish Office in an envelope marked Turkeys. The money will be used to either purchase and cook turkeys by volunteers,or donated directly to Our Daily Bread for their needs. Be sure to make your check payable to St. John Church. If you have any questions please call the Parish Office at Anything you can do to help us in this inner-city outreach is greatly appreciated. Do you enjoy helping others with their problems? You may be the right person to respond to the invitation to be a Stephen Minister at St. John. A Stephen Minister is not expected to be a counselor but a caring, loving person who is there to give support and hope. There is no doubt that this is a big time commitment, including 50 hours of training (beginning in January of 2018), a 2-year commitment thereafter, ongoing support meetings, and of course time with your carereceiver. However, the rewards, in every way, are wonderful! We are currently looking for females in our parish who are interested in becoming Stephen Ministers. If you have an interest, or have any questions about this ministry and would like more information you may call the office ( ext. 115) and talk to Scott Steinke. Thank you and God Bless!! RCIA RCIA meets on Thursday nights from 7:00 9:00 p.m. in the Spirit House. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is a formation process that affords participants the opportunity to grow in their relationship with God. It is designed to help non-catholic adults discern whether or not the Lord is calling them to become fully initiated members of the Catholic Church. If they choose to become a Catholic, they will be initiated at the Easter Vigil Mass on March 31, Please call Deacon Jerry Barney at , ext. 121 if you re interested. 7

8 I Have Called You By Name; You are Mine... Isaiah 43: 1 Our theme highlights that we have all been called by God and to emphasize places within our community where others can execute their time and talents. In this section, we highlight parishioners, groups and ministries within the St. John Parish who have been called by God to give, serve, and share their talents. Please contact Angela at apugliano@stjohnwc.org if you have a ministry in mind. These groups have been called by name... The Schroeder Family - Thank You! Download our parish app today! Stay connected with St. John. Set up prayer reminders. Listen to homilies. Scan the code or search your app store for myparish. How have you been called by name? Parishioners Gert and Gus Schroeder and their son spent hours sanding and refinishing our main entry doors in the church. Eighteen years of weather and sun had taken their toll on the doors. Gert and Gus approached us and asked if they could take this project on as a gift to the parish. We are so appreciative to them. We had gotten bids from door companies on this project and the cost was in the thousands! The Schroeder family s hard work has saved our parish a lot of money and the doors look like brand new. It s parishioners like them that make this parish such a wonderful community. Thanks to the Schroeders for answering their calls from God! As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God s varied grace. - 1 Peter 4:10 8 St. Nick Toy Drive for Campton Mission Nov. 25 & 26 In celebration of the feast of St. Nicholas, and in honor of his generous spirit, we will hold our annual Toy Drive for the Campton Mission of Appalachia. We encourage children and all parishioners to bring unwrapped new games, new toys, and various types of new balls for children ages 1 11 to the liturgies on Saturday (11/25) or Sunday (11/26). Place the toys in the Gathering Space before Mass. Sister Susan in Campton requests that the toys be UNWRAPPED. Also, please do not include toy guns. Thank you for making a brighter Christmas for the parents and children in Campton! Prayer Shawl Ministry Prayer shawls are crocheted or knitted while the individuals pray for healing, comfort and peace for the person who will be receiving the shawl. I am trying to find people who are interested in starting a Prayer Shawl Ministry at our parish. If you are interested in being part of a Prayer Shawl Ministry please me at killingworthjl@gmail.com. Please include if you would prefer to meet regularly, periodically or work on the shawls at home on your own. If you would like to meet please let me know what days are best and what time of day you would prefer. If you would be interested in making prayer shawls but cannot crochet let me know and I would love to teach you! If you cannot contribute by making shawls but would still like to participate please let me know if you would be willing to donate yarn for the shawls. I am praying that we will be able to get something started after the first of the year as I know this time of year starts to get extremely busy. Thank you for your time! Katy Illingworth
